heres a question for you all you 2nd amendment loving american patriots out there. Im looking to purchase a .22LR to shoot at a local gun range. I am looking for an inexpensive but reliable model, preferably a bolt action? I dont know alot about the regulations surrounding the purchase of firearms, but i have my hunting liscence and have gone through the safty courses, and am also an eagle scout. Just looking for help on the rules and a reccomendation on a good gun.

As long as you're 18, you can purchase a rifle at any Big 5 or gun shop.

Marlin 925
Marlin 25N
Savage Mark 2

to name a few affordable .22LR bolt actions.

Marlin Model 60's can be had used for under 100 around here also the savage mark 2s are awesome especially if you get an accutrigger. The savage 93r17 is also a good gun that I could be talked into parting with however it is a 17 hmr

Our laws in OZ are quite strict in comparison. When applying for your firearms license here you need to be 18 and there is a wait of up to 6 months before you hear anything. I am still waiting for a letter and applied 3 months ago. The fees for our licenses are quite absurd also.

Everything in our country is absurd considering the fact you need a license and pay a tax is against our constitution. Just like most other things now a days our Constitution gets trampled on and if you stand up to say anything about it your a racist redneck hillbilly thats in love with your cousin or you are some type of extremist of various other stereotypes. God forbid we want to stand up for what our country was founded on and simply be patriots... rant off.. now for a bit of humor... I am surprised that the wait for an Aussie permit isn't a lot longer being a country full of criminals and descendants of criminals. Just ribbing ya a little bit...

okay, so i need to apply for a licence before i can buy? I might have to go peruse a few local gun shops now. PS, perk of living in WI, most gun shops will let you shoot before you buy (the local ones) as they are outside of the cities. :D

No sir in the great country of the USA you can buy without a license except for communist occupied illinois. If you are just going to get a rifle there are few to no rules on them. Check your local and state statutes but you should be GTG. The only time you need to have a license is if you intend to carry a handgun.

grumble... its a license to carry handgun... unless your in a muncipality that requires specific permission to carry concealed. I may be completely off base however in Indiana many people refer to it as a ccw permit which simply is wrong. In indiana you can get a 4 year or lifetime License To Carry Handgun, the law does not predispose how you must carry as long as it is not wreckless or threatening. That being said I would almost always conceal carry so you dont get the psycho with a gun calls to police and end up spread eagle on the asphalt because you are are practicing your rights..

in ID, it is legal to carry a handgun in a holster as long as it is in plain sight. you DO have to have a concealed weapons permit to have it anywhere other than in a holster in plain view.

Which is bullsh... but anyway i will digress if i go down that road and turn into a raving interwebz warrior with ranting tendencies..

Our laws were a lot less strict before a guy went on a rampage with some automatic shot guns and automatic .22 rifles. In total we have 5-6 grades of license now, starting at A and going to F with some exceptions. Basically your A-B is all you can obtain without being a member of a club or needing it for work purposes i.e cattle farmers etc. A and B is all you really need over here anyway, covers most shotguns and all rifles from .22-.308. If we want a handgun that is an entirely different license and usually reserved for security firms, police and the military...unless you are part of a club. It really is quite a lot to get your head around.

We also need to sit a whole theory and practical course with a psych evaluation before we are given our license.

Once again this is bull in my opinion. Just because one politician is corrupt should we oust the whole government.. wait bad example.. But let us say that some nozzle comes on here and posts the nastiest and most illegal pictures you have seen in your life does that mean all of us on this board should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law? No of course not, we shouldn't be held accountable for what other people do unless we condoned or helped them to do so. Not to mention if someone truly wanted to commit an act like the fellow you mention above he will find a way laws or not.
