View Full Version : Why would anyone build this?

I found a website that sells custom PC's.....

Well, not really, they're all pre mods. The specs have me confused. Why would you put 16GB of RAM in a PC with an X2 250?

...that is odd... The only reason I can think of is a database server, but...that's clearly not what this is designed for. :P

the answer is that the average computer user is stupid. and will buy it because "its got lots of gigs"

Well, it almost definitely actually is on the PCIe bus...not that it matters much with that low-end a GPU, but still. :P

It always annoy me when people write that it's a 1000gb HDD. If you HAVE to explain it just put "(1000gb)" in parenthesis after writing that it's a 1TB HDD.

They should put an dancing  after the 1000GB!

That isn't the default config the site gives for the computer. Someone played with the configs before they gave you that link.

The 16GB is just an option they have on the list for all AMD systems that can hold that much memory. It is only set default for the top end quad and x6 rigs.

Whoever pointed that out to you seems like they just did so to go "Why would you put 16GB ram with an x2?" and criticize the site/company. I'd rather be given the option than not if I was going to buy a pre-built computer. If the site recommended that as a configuration it would be setup as a default; it's not, it's just an option for those who may want it, and I doubt that happens on a regular basis.

that seems to be what it's listed as on the main site, http://www.computerlx.com/default.aspx

You can cache the entire operating system, or a program on RAM. It's amazing, you should try it out.

Actually, yes, this is very true..idk about the entire OS, I've never seen a good way of doing that outside of a live-CD...but programs? Hells yeah! On my main system I run Firefox on a ramdisk because it was getting really upset working off my SSD (ridiculous number of tiny files rewritten over and over)....but holy crap is it fast! I never realized how much time I spent waiting on the drive before (FF was actually slower on my SSD than my old HDD because of the tiny files).

I stand corrected. It wasn't listed in any of the categories on the left. I don't know if it cache's configurations that users put together and highlights them on the main page. But you're right, it's there.

I still don't see the point in criticizing a company for putting a configuration up. Maybe that rig could be useful to someone. As modder's we are the last people to stick with everything standard, so I don't see the point in pointing the finger and saying what use is that.

It isn't as if they are charging a lot for it, as building it on newegg cost more than that (707.90 before the $50 current instant rebate going on). And you get a three year warranty on the whole rig, not piecemeal.

I guess I don't see the point in these threads over the years here, and other forums, that take pokes at odd configurations. Especially considering all the stupid crap (from a purely functional standpoint) that we do to rigs. Maybe it's just me. *shrug*

For running small programs I use Farstone Virtual Hard Drive 2 Pro...unfortunately, it looks like they've stopped making it. :( That's a shame, because it's a really nice program as long as you don't need a drive larger than, iirc, 2GB. I only use it for FF, so I only have it running a 64MB drive. For anything larger than that, I haven't seen anything simple for Windows.

If you're doing the kind of wacky stuff like caching your os on your RAM I think you'd build your computer yourself from scratch ^^
