so, my friend has an old pentium d 2.66ghz, that he claims was having thermal problems, such as getting to 120 degrees celc. i said it was most likely an incorrectly mounted heatsink. he says something along the lines of he installed himself, yada yada yada... and basically the chip was bad and he was getting a new chip. i told him to save it for me, and ii would take a look at it. so the next day when im there, i ask him about it. ii see he has saved it in a  ziplock bag, you know the type that cling together when you first open them? i was like,.... couldnt say anything, left, and called him an hour later, and explained to my friend why you dont do that.... i am still gonna test it just to see if it even boots, just for kicks and giggles, but.... my hopes arnt too high.:whistler:

I've left CPUs on my tabletop or even the floor, and they've always been fine.

I would be worried about the temp, though. He must have done something very wrong.

I am an ESDphobe. I wear my anti static strap when ever working on anything PC or electronics related. In fact I have a anti static mat covering my whole work surface now.

Cale I think you should always discharge your static build up by shocking Trace. It would be funny...

I've seen a car battery put across an i7 and it still work. I have stacks of circuit boards on a set of bare wooden shelves and shock horror they're all fine. I have never owned a discharging wrist strap nor an anti-static mat, though for transportation (lots of rubbing), apply some common sense with how ICs are treated.

The P4 will be in the same condition it was in the PC.
