I am a nerd.

I like to think I'm somewhere along the geek/nerd border...though if I'm honest, I'm probably fully inside nerd territory...

Then, of course, there's this one.. :whistler:

Im definitly a geek and surely not a nerd. :)

I'd think a nerd is someone who keeps to themself and only does nerdy things. Works on a computer all day and comes home to be on the computer. A pocket protector would'nt look out of place on him.

I'm a geek because i enjoy joc type activities, work in physicly demanding job. I like computers and tinkering because its mentally challenging and keeps my attention.

Nerd. But really most like x88x's cartoon. Also though in a little redneck/Red Green.

I posted before I saw your venn diagram. But I prefer 'geek' anyway.

Definitely geek, if we're going solely by Konrad's diagram, which really looks like it ought to be part of a powerpoint presentation somewhere. I used to be more of a nerd, but then worked retail computer sales on commission which forced me to interact with people every day...which wound up making me FAR more outgoing and personable than I used to be. Why, I'm positively friendly. :D

What if you're not in an overlapping area?

What if you're not in an overlapping area?

Then you're intelligent, socially inept, or obsessive.

geek all the way

Then you're intelligent, socially inept, or obsessive.
My point is, the Venn diagram is incorrect because 'nerd' is a thing a person can be, whilst 'social ineptitude' isn't. You can be 'socally inept', you can't be 'social ineptitude'.

You can't be intelligence or obsession either. The main discs are traits, not categories.

Between nerd and geek, I'm good with people, I just don't like them.

My point exactly. The sets from which the diagram are constructed must be logically viable also.

Intelligent and obsessive? That's geek territory.

I have my disagreements with the diagram, so I'm not going to vote, but I also don't think I care enough to go into depth. I'd self classify as a nerd, but by another definition than that found in the diagram.

Definitely a geek according to that Venn diagram. I love playing sports AND working on my computers!

I'm aware of that. It's just a badly written one.

The diagram was taken from this site (http://www.cnn.com/2010/LIVING/12/02/nerd.or.geek/index.html?hpt=C2), where CNN (and Weird Al) describe their definitions.

Another, more complex, Venn diagram is here (http://www.burningdoor.com/dick/images/venn%20diagram.html).

Whilst somewhat amusing, it's not even strictly a venn diagram

That article was pretty good. It's interesting to see people's opinions on the words. I tend to agree with the people who look at nerd as an intellectual standing and geek as a social standing.

I've always felt that a geek is the person who stays home and studies or plays games or does other anti-social things because they love books or knowledge or fantasy worlds more than the company of others.

A nerd may not fit in perfectly, but at least he goes to the party. A nerd may be just as interested in the subjects the geek is, but he is social (however awkward or not it is) and does stuff like sports and building things.

lol... flame at will, but the fact that we are debating this kind of speaks for itself. :D

I don't think anyone is flaming. I think we are all giving our own opinions, and I don't discount anyone's definition of geek or nerd. I don't think anyone is an authority on the subject.

I memorised Pi to about 25 decimal places when I was about...12? I remember it up to 7 or so now.

I'm a bit of an anachronism to a lot of people - I'm probably a more hardcore nerd than the vast majority of the people on my computer science course (the BSOD tattoo has a certain nerdy kudos to it) - but I'm also probably the most heavily tattooed student on the course as well, and among them I'm also one of the older, crustier heavy drinkers, with a collection of axes and a chainsaw to provide me with firewood in the winter.

It's quite joyful to mix the two without any middle ground. Feel free to discuss your dissertation proposals in the pubs, but don't also forget to drop in references to that 9 months where all your housemates were heroin addicts.

The heroin addict stories aren't that interesting, actually. They mainly involve someone stealing someone else's milk.

Edit: look how SKINNY I was then!

3.1415926536 - that's my limit - but that's only because that's the limit of the calculator I used to use in school like, 18 years ago. It is kinda scary that I still remember it 18 years later

what if you own a lot of telescopes, but still play hockey?

What if you have a top o' the line smartphone, but still use paper maps to get around town?

What if you have more computers then people in the house?

What if you love electronics, but still have a hot girlfriend and a daughter?

What if you like to go camping and outdoors, but you've still got to check your email?

damn im confused : \

i've only remembered three digits on pie.

d_stilgar
12-07-2010, 09:39 PM
Twigs, you are no nerd or geek because you called it pie instead of pi.

What if you just have a strangely powerful memory? Mind you, I don't recognize or remember faces very well and I forget that I know people or how I know people, and I even have issues recognizing friends sometimes, but when it comes to facts and numbers I do pretty well.
