Due to all of the viewers of our previous Overclocking Day in which we attempted a world record, we will be hosting an Overclocking Weekend! Taking place on Saturday, December 18th and Sunday, December 19th, TBCS Journalist Trace Hagan will be spending his whole weekend LIVE on video overclocking an Intel Core i5-655k and a Core i7-980x! Read all of the details, after the jump (http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/frontpage/?q=live+overclocking+day+2)...

You Can Do It!!!!!!

At home depot picking up some supplies.
Barbs, insulation, ice chest. Hmm what could I be cooking up for this weekend? Correct guess wins a prize

A REALLY big slush box. :)

Trace
12-13-2010, 09:54 PM
Close, but no.

Trace
12-13-2010, 10:52 PM
So let's add some details to this. I'll be collecting base values for the systems in SuperPiMod, Cinebench, and Vantage. Then I will overclock as high as possible for each benchmark and compare the increase. This is the basic plan!

A REALLY big slush box. :)

Close, but no.

A somewhat big slush box?

Trace
12-14-2010, 06:56 PM
Close, but still no. It works on a similar principle to a slushbox

Oneslowz28
12-14-2010, 07:32 PM
I know what it is....

Trace

I know what it is....

Shhhh... Let them guess!

billygoat333
12-14-2010, 11:16 PM
LN2 pot? lol idk.

msmrx57
12-15-2010, 12:24 AM
Dry ice filled cooler with your raddy in it?

Trace
12-15-2010, 12:31 AM
Not LN2 pot.

msmrx, that is what a slushbox is

SXRguyinMA
12-15-2010, 12:34 AM
you're going to be running super chilled water into the tank, then it will be forced through the radiator taking heat with it and out the other side?

Trace
12-15-2010, 12:37 AM
Getting even closer, but still no.

mofo
12-17-2010, 02:37 AM
Are you going to push air through the ln2 storage, into the ice chest, through the rad and back to the start?

x88x
12-17-2010, 03:17 AM
LN2 slushbox? :P

..Hmm, or are those hoses coming in and out of the box not attached to the radiator?

billygoat333
12-17-2010, 12:47 PM
youre gonna pour gasoline into the cooler, set it on fire, and see just HOW hot the processor can get before it explodes? :D

Trace
12-17-2010, 01:55 PM
I love the crazy ideas--however, none of them are correct.

2nd hint (and probably the last): THINK: Cheap-mans home made phase changer

msmrx57
12-17-2010, 02:06 PM
Radiator in a cooler ice packed with the loop running ammonia under a partial vacuum?

Trace
12-17-2010, 02:35 PM
No. Lol

blaze15301
12-17-2010, 03:28 PM
i got it. your going to get a tank of liquid nitrogen, strap it to your back and stand over the computer manically laughing while freeze spraying everything. then your going to have a friend do some crazy over clocks. yes?

SXRguyinMA
12-17-2010, 03:34 PM
no no you're going to run LN2 through the cooling system and put more in the tank as a super cooler :D

Trace
12-17-2010, 03:42 PM
SXR is dead on.

NOT.

I see what you did there. :D

diluzio91
12-17-2010, 07:57 PM
you canibalized a fridge and are going to run the coolant through a radiator that has the refrigerated air running through it?

x88x
12-17-2010, 08:20 PM
It's a AC window unit, if I'm not mistaken. ;)

Trace
12-17-2010, 08:25 PM
x88x is 100% correct.

SXRguyinMA
12-17-2010, 08:29 PM
this is going to ROCK :D

Trace
12-17-2010, 08:40 PM
My thoughts exactly!

Trace
12-17-2010, 11:31 PM
Down to below 40*F which is what I achieved with DICE last time.

Kayin
12-17-2010, 11:50 PM
Trace is attempting something that's basically impossible with off the shelf water cooling. In fact, it's impossible with any current fluid.

This will prove to be interesting.

x88x
12-18-2010, 12:21 AM
Ah, is he using your nano-particle stuff, Kayin?

Kayin
12-18-2010, 12:30 AM
Nope. Not the nano-stuff, it'll only do about -30.

Just have to wait and see.

Trace
12-18-2010, 12:30 AM
Well--I seem to be having some issues. Please hold while we fix the technical difficulties.

I may in fact be going to a slushbox.

blaze15301
12-18-2010, 12:36 AM
wait how are you going to pen the rad with out letting all the fre-on out?

Trace
12-18-2010, 12:39 AM
Did you see the pictures I posted?

SXRguyinMA
12-18-2010, 12:41 AM
uh oh did you rupture a line?

Trace
12-18-2010, 12:42 AM
My pump isn't pumping. I completely ICED the evap. I had the water down to ~33*F

Kayin
12-18-2010, 12:44 AM
OK, I know what's wrong there.

You need to insulate that pump, bro. If not, get a pond pump, like a MAG5.

Trace
12-18-2010, 12:50 AM
I didn't have to last time with the DICE

Kayin
12-18-2010, 12:52 AM
It's too late for a pump from me. Hit microcenter or something...

Trace
12-18-2010, 12:55 AM
I have a spare :)

Also--MicroCenter is 2hrs away, and right now I'm carless

blaze15301
12-18-2010, 04:16 AM
im not understanding it. is the water passing threw the trash can or the rad?

mDust
12-18-2010, 09:34 AM
This is almost exactly what I have been planning to do with the project in my sig. I will just be cooling a liquid bath of Halocarbon .8 oil though...no pumping involved. I switched to that oil (fluid below -100F) when I found out that mineral oil clouds below 50F and then turns to jelly.

Trace
12-18-2010, 10:22 AM
I'm finishing the setup right now and will be going live in a couple of hours. Everybody ready?

Up Live at 5.01GHz Will it hit 5.5ghz? Gotta tune in to find out. http://www.ustream.tv/channel/thebestcasescenario-overclocking-channel#

Trace

I think we just might:

http://valid.canardpc.com/cache/banner/1543120.png (http://valid.canardpc.com/show_oc.php?id=1543120)

This makes the the number 6 fastest overclock on this board.

And the 73 Fastest for the CPU

2nd fastest considerng its watercooling.

blaze15301
12-18-2010, 11:37 PM
see i told you could do 5.5.

Trace
12-19-2010, 01:02 PM
Barely, but we did! Stay tuned for the 980x overclocking today!

x88x
12-19-2010, 06:04 PM
Damn, I missed the whole thing...again... What were the results?

mDust
12-19-2010, 06:20 PM
Damn, I missed the whole thing...again... What were the results?

They took a 2 hour lunch break a little over 2 hours ago. Should be back on in a bit to have an air-cooled go on the i7 980x.
Looked like the i7 only made it to 5.0Ghz but wasn't very stable.

Trace
12-20-2010, 01:20 AM
5Ghz is the upper limit of this chip. I'm really happy with the results!
