View Full Version : My reservoir...

So, I will be posting this in my worklog, as well, if I can dig it up that is....
This is the reservoir for Mark1. It will end up being a standalone deal, sitting on the desk next to the case.
So I am very excited to bring you my latest creation, an external reservior for Mark1. This idea came to me completely out the blue one day, not long after a water pump died on me. As, usual, I came up with a simple idea, and it exploded lol.
See originally I was just going to build a simple reservior onto the side of the case. Then Eureka!
I have been dying to find a way to incorporate this vodka bottle, but until now I didn't really have a viable use.... So, onto the pictures! (Who reads all this anyways?)
So after some deliberation on material, I decided on 3/8" rebar. Using the box as a size reference, we cut and bent lengths of rebar into "U's".

Welded together now;

Using diamond mesh for the the bottom, here's what it looks like so far...

And here's the stopper,
http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/1263/imag0369.jpg
After a brief introduction to my drill,
and the bottle is now plumbed.
http://img262.imageshack.us/img262/4181/imag0371.jpg
The line going into the bottle;
http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/9291/imag0383d.jpg
A ziptie, to act like a hose clamp to help secure the silicone plug.
http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/5465/imag0395k.jpg
http://img121.imageshack.us/img121/9116/imag0396r.jpg
http://img257.imageshack.us/img257/3928/imag0397o.jpg (http://img257.imageshack.us/i/imag0397o.jpg/)
(awkward, unclear picture. This is the front of the tubing.)
end plugged, side cut. This will make the coolant actually run down the inside front of the bottle, (cool) instead of just running in (boring).
That's all for now. Still to come, a door for the backside, a way of wrapping or covering the joints. Also, a sweet ass idea for for a stand.

That is definitely the most interesting reservoir I've ever seen.:up:

haha love the rebar cage! those bottles are sick. I saw them in the liquor store and almost bought it just for the glass!
Nice! OOC, is that 'high tech aging process' anything besides sitting in a tank of water? Some kind of chemical bath of brazing? Or am I overthinking it? :P

It's actually one of my feeder tanks. I have a 210gal tank, usually full of predatory fish. I have 3 tanks, in the stand under the big tank. I usually keep the full of goldfish awaiting their demise. This one happened to be empty.

Quick update today. Didn't get as much done as I had hoped I would. I know, shocking, right.
Ok, so, got the door built;
http://img89.imageshack.us/img89/8409/imag0403.jpg
am in the process of grinding down all the weld marks. Might get done tomorrow, idk.
Also started wrapping all the joints...
http://img641.imageshack.us/img641/9322/imag0399b.jpg
http://img440.imageshack.us/img440/700/imag0398.jpg
I will twist the backside and cut them off later.
The plumbing to the bottle is also complete;
http://img510.imageshack.us/img510/3727/imag0401l.jpg

Another small update....
Almost done grinding. Basically taking the weld marks from this;
http://img827.imageshack.us/img827/6128/imag0409q.jpg
to this;
http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/6196/imag0410.jpg
which will rust and fade out nicely.
Also, got done wrapping the joints on the cage. I wrapped them all in a special pattern the mostly covers the actual joint part.
http://img441.imageshack.us/img441/8558/imag0404.jpg
Then I cramped down with vice-grips,
http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/1403/imag0405.jpg
twist twist twist,
http://img204.imageshack.us/img204/6828/imag0406b.jpg
clean break off. Then I just hammer that little part down. Simple, effective.
http://img815.imageshack.us/img815/7825/imag0407.jpg
More tomorrow!

Yay! So Stage 1 is like, almost done! This update will flow quick.
Decided to use standard hinges, and just beat them and rust them.
The door is welded on, and the joints wrapped. TBH, I'm not necessarily 100% on the hinges, but hopefully, with a little work, and time, they'll grow on me.
ooohhh shiny. That just won't do.
http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/9484/imag0415v.jpg
Hey a bubble bath!
http://img189.imageshack.us/img189/4818/imag0416r.jpg
Hehe naked metal...
http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/2619/imag0418k.jpg
This is what sandpaper wished it could do. Now the hinge is weldable, as well as rust, which in this case is, of course, desirable.
Isn't chemistry cool?
ditto that with a chain.
http://img33.imageshack.us/img33/6672/imag0419.jpg
Also, weld marks just won't do;
http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/5933/imag0421.jpg
ALL weld marks ground off, and also I cut a groove in each link, to simulate the links being hammered
together instead of welded.
http://img530.imageshack.us/img530/6922/imag0423k.jpg
Now, smooth steel... Hmm need a highly technical, advanced proccess to utilize, to add a nice, aged and abused appearence...
http://img574.imageshack.us/img574/7561/imag0428.jpg
(12 hours of getting dragged around behind my truck would make anyone look old)
heh
(ignore everything but the chain in this picture!!) seriously.
This is the chain, after a day in the fishtank. I just opened the first and last links for four lengths.
http://img820.imageshack.us/img820/6264/imag0431r.jpg
As you can see, the "special aging proccess" eliminated even the grinding marks from me grinding down the welds.
Pictures!

Some extra touches I've been working on...
So, it turns out that it's really damn hard to buy barbed wire. "It's a dangerous item to carry" I was told.
So, I walked past the axes, saws, torches, acids, and power tools and left the hardware store.
Typical of true modder style, I decided to make my own.
Baling wire.
http://img602.imageshack.us/img602/1664/imag0016j.jpg
Twist twist twist.
http://img543.imageshack.us/img543/8243/imag0017r.jpg
Several shorter pieces cut, and wrapped around,
http://img834.imageshack.us/img834/2066/imag0019q.jpg
voila!
Now, it's really hard to see what I did here, so I just took a crapload of pictures, both with and without flash. What there is, is four straps down, one around the eyes, and one around the mouth. Sick, huh?

For future reference, a farm supply store might actually carry barbed wire. ...not sure if you would be able to buy that little of it though...

Yeah, I had thought of that. But when I looked online, they only sell spools, and it ain't cheap. I'm pretty damn happy with what I made. I think it looks pretty legit, plus it doesn't have the actual sharp points to impale myself on accidentally

this thing looks awesome. the only thing that would make it cooler would be some sort of LED lighting from underneath shining in the bottle for when the room is dark.

I love the homebrew barbed wire! (for next time, just go drive out in the country, find a poorly fenced field and *borrow* a small section of wire that is extra on the end of a post.)
Or just talk to the farmer. Most I've met are actually quite nice people. ;)

@farlo, thanks, and just wait my friend. All in good time ;)
@BG, that was my next course of action lol. In my off road ventures I have seen many washes with bundles of old, tore down barbed wire... That would have worked great (risk of tetanus aside), but I decided to give this a go. This was free, and didn't take any gas. Free= win.
Keep checking back pplz, I'm excited to get started on the second half.

GAAAHHHH I'm super $(%*$ng pissed! My package was here. It was in the apt complex. But since paypal didn't put the apt # on the shipping address, it is now being returned. So I'm going to be chewing someone's ass today. Thanks Paypal, ya jerk offs.
This is exactly why when I lived in an apartment I had everything delivered to work. ..well, that and the one time I had something delivered to the apartment and it was left outside my door it..well, let's just say that by the time I got home ~4-5 hours later, it was nowhere to be seen.

12-23-2010, 06:22 PM
yea I usually have stuff delivered to work as well, but mostly so it's not left outside if it's raining or snowing. My wife and I rent an apt that's part of my parent's house, so no matter where it gets left it'll get to me lol

Hoo-ra update time.
Progress is goin somewhat slow, but going nonetheless.
Working on the main frame;
Several angles...

This update brought to you by the letter "D!"
http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/9210/imag0011uv.jpg
I wasn't trying to make it symmetrical and even... The odd shape is intentional.
Remember this guy?

Well, he is getting, reassigned...

http://img522.imageshack.us/img522/6023/imag0005n.jpg
These wires don't go to anything. I just found a bunch of different wires and a small section of hose and cut them and pulled them all in different fashions.
Some black convoluted tubing. This does have tube in it, but it's just to keep its shape. It doesn't go to anything, and the othe end will not be exposed.
http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/8161/imag0015i.jpg

Here it is mocked up together, maybe you can get a rough idea of where this is going. Probably not, but hey.
http://img651.imageshack.us/img651/249/imag00122.jpg
Also I have a support for the arm that I've been working on, but it's still kinda rough, I'll post pics of that tomorrow.

OK, not an actual building update,
I just wanted to show some materials I picked up last night.
I know the color doesn't come through in this picture, but trust me, this sand has a beautiful red color. I got it from the red rock area around Sedona, in northern Arizona. I will sift it, getting rid of everything but the fine sand.
http://img221.imageshack.us/img221/8562/imag0023bo.jpg
Also snagged a few red rocks.
http://img713.imageshack.us/img713/8606/imag0028b.jpg
As well as these, from a local fish store.
http://img59.imageshack.us/img59/2306/imag0024tu.jpg
Now, I know these would never exist in the same place naturally, so I don't need some would-be geologist telling me that. I dug the red earth myself, so I know what was around....
http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/7376/imag0025j.jpg
These will all come into play in the final stages.
(For those of you unfamiliar with the natural beauty of Sedona, here his a random pic from the web. Almost kinda looks like Mars or something.)

Another smallish update.
Taking some inspiration from the Wood Stove Mod, (that and the fact that I couldn't find exactly what I was looking for anyway) I decided to make my own smoker unit.
Simple cast aluminum project box, used a dremel to cut the hole for a 40mm fan.
http://img713.imageshack.us/img713/8821/imag0029u.jpg
http://img340.imageshack.us/img340/9341/imag0030po.jpg
DC powered soldering iron;
http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/8232/imag0027b.jpg
Assembled;
http://img836.imageshack.us/img836/1342/imag0031vs.jpg
The clear tube off to the side goes to the respirator mask the biomech skull will be wearing.
Test run using vegetable oil;
http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/3355/imag0035w.jpg
http://img16.imageshack.us/img16/3355/imag0035w.jpg
It smokes, but I'm not exactly going to be using this to send out any smoke signals.
To get more contact with the actual heating element, I disconnected the wire,
http://img28.imageshack.us/img28/8044/imag00392.jpg
Then flipped the element around inside the barrel. The holes will allow more contact, and better heat dispersion. Or something. And stuff.
http://img403.imageshack.us/img403/9431/imag0040j.jpg
I'll keep working on this throughout the weekend, as well as work on getting some more welding done. This thing is nearing the end of actual construction, however it might be a couple weeks before I actually get the last few parts I need. I will try and stay otherwise busy in the meantime.

Nice and flush.
http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/9690/imag0059g.jpg
(As it turns out, the single flat stock isn't strong enough. Will have to switch to angle iron or something that doesn't flex.)
Here is is all mocked up;
http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/565/imag0055q.jpg
Please note- the water pump will not be right there. It's just holding up the skull right now.
Heehee, I like. :twisted:
For the leg, what if you got a length of narrow flat stock and welded it perpendicularly on the back of the on that's already there. That should give you a good, solid support without having it stick out nearly as much as angle iron would.
Mark_Hardware
01-03-2011, 07:16 PM
Well, here's the deal; (lets see if I can confuse the hell out of everyone)
The flat stock is going to get welded into place, front and back, in the grooves I made. Then, the back will be cut flush with the frame. The front will end up being shorter, I just haven't cut it to length yet. The problem is that piece, when attached to the frame, flexes to the point of being useless.
Keep in mind, the cage is a solid 15 lbs, maybe a bit more, and it's hanging over a foot away from the base, so the leverage is brutal.
I'll use angle iron, I think. Possibly some round stock. That won't flex. We'll see. Gonna be a week until I can but more materials though x[

01-05-2011, 04:29 PM
Somewhat small update today, I didn't have much time to work.
Got my piece of angle iron;
http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/4931/imag0071f.jpg
It's a little smaller, so I'll have to fill in some gap. But, this won't flex, so it'll make a great leg. Haven't cut the frame to acommadate yet, will try and get to that tommorrow.
Also, I started skinning. Now, all of this will be covered, so physical appearance won't matter. This step is only to develop the shape.
http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/3203/imag0072z.jpg
http://img713.imageshack.us/img713/7391/imag0073p.jpg
This will consist of cutting, drilling, riveting, hammering, bending, drilling out the rivets, repeat. Over and over.
This piece I started bending, to use as a crossmember of sorts. Actually, the skull will attach to it. I need to track down a torch, though, as I can't get the bend I want cold.
http://img521.imageshack.us/img521/8646/imag0074pe.jpg
I can't believe no one is taking that!
Done ;)

01-14-2011, 04:01 PM
OK! I am very excited to bring you today's update!
I've been working on the legs for the base. Now, I kinda wish I had gotten more (better) pictures, cause I'm pretty proud of this work lol.
On both the legs, I made notches;
http://img43.imageshack.us/img43/9832/imag0076e.jpg
http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/1605/imag0077o.jpg
On the bottom side of the frame, corresponding notches;
http://img833.imageshack.us/img833/5059/imag0079d.jpg
This is where the arm is welded to the frame. You can see it is notched out here too;
http://img140.imageshack.us/img140/7366/imag0081f.jpg
All these pieces fit together like a big 3D puzzle, it really worked great.
The flat bar welded on here at an angle is for the bio-mech skull.
http://img213.imageshack.us/img213/4798/imag0082d.jpg
Here are a few pictures showing the legs, post- assload of grinding;
http://img214.imageshack.us/img214/9851/imag0102i.jpg
http://img141.imageshack.us/img141/3456/imag0103e.jpg
http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/4002/imag0104n.jpg
During which my RTX died. So after some shopping around, I decided on this little number;
http://img811.imageshack.us/img811/5218/imag0087q.jpg
http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/9334/imag0089z.jpg
Eh I'll read this later.
http://img823.imageshack.us/img823/5195/imag0088e.jpg
Got a few other things in the mail as well;
Tools!
http://img6.imageshack.us/img6/9562/imag0091r.jpg
Connectors!
http://img200.imageshack.us/img200/5204/imag0092a.jpg
Now, I'm not 100% on how to use these, so if anyone has any pointers, it would be appreciated. There are pass-through and end cap connectors there.
And let's not forget;
http://img232.imageshack.us/img232/4496/imag0090p.jpg
hehehe
Speaking of "legs"
On the cage side, the femur will rest on the angle iron. (Which has been cut to length now) I will cut away parts of the bone to fit down on the metal snug.
http://img829.imageshack.us/img829/6779/imag0101m.jpg
For the other side, I cut the other femur;

For the SATA power connectors, just push the wire into the slot with a flathead screwdriver. Then, once all the wires are in, slap the back cover on.

Update.
I filled all the weld joints with jb weld. For some areas needing more attention, I switched to Bondo, so that I could actually get this done.
Everything sanded down;
http://img708.imageshack.us/img708/6983/imag0107g.jpg
http://img269.imageshack.us/img269/9418/imag0108o.jpg
Started painting;
http://img255.imageshack.us/img255/2783/imag0109y.jpg
http://img26.imageshack.us/img26/6022/imag0111cq.jpg
http://img29.imageshack.us/img29/1656/imag0110ev.jpg
I did some touch up work, then repainted, so some of the rougher spots you see are gone now. Also not pictured, I did a lot of work on the arm.
Smoothed out the transitions between tube and flat stock really nicely. Then I painted the entire piece with the flat black.
Painted the exposed parts metallic silver;
http://img37.imageshack.us/img37/2730/imag0112ad.jpg
http://img135.imageshack.us/img135/8716/imag0113ib.jpg

http://img811.imageshack.us/img811/7484/imag0114a.jpg
http://img17.imageshack.us/img17/1344/imag0118fz.jpg
Oh and btw, I make no apologies whatsoever about the over spray. Those parts of the frame will never be seen. It's bad enough I spent an entire weekend doing body work to those parts which will, again, never be seen.
Plus, there will be lots of repainting for me in the future. This work was mainly to protect what I have done so far, and give a an idea what some parts will look like. There are touchups to be done, a bit more welding, and sections where the bones attach to the metal. All in good time.

Update later this weekend... For now, I am very excited to bring you my latest addition;
A gas/gasless MIG welder! 110VAC, it will weld lighter steels, stainless steel, and aluminums. Can be used with Argon, CO2, and combinations of the 2.

OK, so not quite the update I wanted to post. I will probably post another in the next few days...
I sanded and drilled holes for feet to be mounted;
http://img227.imageshack.us/img227/2742/imag0125w.jpg
Welded nuts on, Feet screwed in.
http://img138.imageshack.us/img138/4996/imag0133mx.jpg
http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/7451/imag0134q.jpg
I also did some more bone grinding;
http://img97.imageshack.us/img97/3332/imag0128c.jpg
http://img535.imageshack.us/img535/5176/imag0129z.jpg
http://img337.imageshack.us/img337/9602/imag0126ta.jpg
Will provide a picture of how this fits later. Also, ignore the chips on the counter. wtf.
Took a large gear and cut it down;
Another fine mess I've gotten myself into.
http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/5547/imag0137z.jpg
This took about 3 hours with an angle grinder. How much do my neighbours love me?
This is the middle piece;
http://img816.imageshack.us/img816/5151/imag0166p.jpg
And after some quality time with ye olde bench grinder;
http://img810.imageshack.us/img810/525/imag0179m.jpg
This will go by a femur, you'll see later.
While cutting the gear, I included my finger in there. The picture of the aftermath got deleted, but maybe that's a good thing. At any rate, you've heard of modders mesh?
http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/2606/imag0140s.jpg
Modders bandage :P
Gear welded on.
http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/6552/imag0167l.jpg
http://img508.imageshack.us/img508/5849/imag0168e.jpg
Strong as hell.
http://img253.imageshack.us/img253/9470/imag0169j.jpg
Shell almost all the way complete;
http://img256.imageshack.us/img256/4857/imag0135wy.jpg
http://img137.imageshack.us/img137/4610/imag0136w.jpg

http://img502.imageshack.us/img502/8081/imag0173a.jpg
http://img291.imageshack.us/img291/3434/imag0174p.jpg
Couldn't reach here to drill holes for rivets,
http://img713.imageshack.us/img713/7203/imag0175s.jpg
So I used the existing holes in the front, for the rivets that hold the shell on.
http://img706.imageshack.us/img706/9463/imag0176e.jpg
http://img811.imageshack.us/img811/935/imag0177j.jpg
It looks a little rougher than I would like, but this part will never be seen.
The bottom. This part looks better.

Small update.
Started gluing some of the bones in place. I'm both excited and nervous about this. I'm worried I might end up regretting it. But, This area will need sanding and painting anyways, soo...

Leg being glued tonight.
http://img832.imageshack.us/img832/1379/imag0190q.jpg
(That's not hanging, btw.... It's just the zipties)
Also, mounted the first elctronic compenents;
A terminal block, mounted underneath so I can actually get to it lol.
http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/5301/imag0182o.jpg
Location for the dimmer switch. No knob, it will be just like that. So I can control the brightness of the led's.
http://img163.imageshack.us/img163/2888/imag0186.jpg
Two pusbutton switches. One for led's, one for smoke.

I'm assuming you have some way of knowing that Mark had seen your reservoir before he made one himself.
Secondly, the reason this item was featured was the amount of modding involved in the cage and support structure as much as anything else - the skull bottle is just a minor part of it.
Yes, yes, you both used the same bottle. Good for you. I'm sure you weren't the first person to think it would look cool as a reservoir. Aside from that, this build is completely different. You make cool stuff, DarthBeavis, don't ruin it with pointless petty squabbling.
Congrats on the front page, Mark! :D

All I'm saying is, if it was borrowed, I'd be happy to give credit. But it's not. Believe me, I've been cooking up ideas since the first bottle I bought. I was also going to put a set of the 1.75L bottles as lights in my Camaro.
To anyone who cares, This project will be finished. To date this year, I've lost all my tools, including my new Snap-on tools (which I'm still paying for), My Camaro, (towed) almost divorced... Yup, 2011, a banner year lol.
I am moving soon, and hoping to pick up working again. I *really* want this particular project done, it's going to be so cool.
Also, I'm thinking that instead of being a part aside of Mark1, I am just going to make it a completely standalone object.....

This. VERY little is original any more, it's how you do it that's important. As such, both of these mods are excellent, and both of them deserve the recognition they have received.

Didn't see that response before. Must have missed it. Anyway, keep working on it when you can, and ignore the flame. It is pure awesome.
Don't worry about it. I'd get worried and moody about originality too if half my mods were the same prefab DangerDen case with expensive parts tossed at it. Steve's work is about the only thing that popped as original on those cases. But that's all IMO, anyway.

Alright, this is going to be a little rough, so please bear with me. I've lost some pictures, plus it's been so long since my last update,
I'm gonna try my hardest to pick up where I left off, and keep things making sense.
The smoker unit is done, and operational, btw;

Started with some wiring. There is a total of four circuits; the pump, the smoker, the lights, and one other effect that I haven't mentioned yet.
Three of which use these push on/ push off buttons. The two "heavier" circuits, the pump and the smoke, use relays.

OK, I'm going to switch gears a little here.

Lmao not an unfair guess! Especially with my kids.
But no, basically what happened was, I was drilling a hole in it, when the the drill bit caught, and tore a giant chunk out. At first I was very disappointed, but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise.:D

OK so to pick up where I left off yesterday.
Again, medical, life-size skull;

First order of business, install water pump;

http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/3793/imag0060vr.jpg
http://img196.imageshack.us/img196/4848/imag0069m.jpg
and of course put into skull.
http://img813.imageshack.us/img813/204/imag0074vf.jpg
heatsink from an old processor;
http://img831.imageshack.us/img831/6467/imag0078vi.jpg
and a dead hard drive. I cut the casing down and gave it a quick and dirty paint job.
http://img11.imageshack.us/img11/7145/imag0083g.jpg
http://img860.imageshack.us/img860/4285/imag0090m.jpg
I had to keep the circuit board in order for the hard drive to do, well, anything at all. And in order for that to work, I had to make
5V and 3.3V lines. Enter VRMs! Glued to the heatsink using a thin layer of glue, so they will still dissipate heat efficiently. I was going
to use rivets, but the metal parts touching made the voltages go screwy.
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/7425/imag0094w.jpg
More work;
http://img545.imageshack.us/img545/8629/imag0080h.jpg
http://img715.imageshack.us/img715/1027/imag00922.jpg
http://img40.imageshack.us/img40/349/imag0091c.jpg
http://img822.imageshack.us/img822/2682/imag0096fu.jpg
http://img52.imageshack.us/img52/1844/imag0097x.jpg
http://img810.imageshack.us/img810/3245/imag0098yd.jpg
http://img571.imageshack.us/img571/3695/imag0099ln.jpg
http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/9057/imag0100r.jpg
I glued a piece of circuit board to the water pump, just for look-sees
http://img684.imageshack.us/img684/1407/imag0095dr.jpg
Stripped back down;
http://img716.imageshack.us/img716/3606/imag0101n.jpg
http://img717.imageshack.us/img717/2862/imag0102e.jpg
Paint!
http://img824.imageshack.us/img824/3911/imag0104ew.jpg
http://img840.imageshack.us/img840/3471/imag0105p.jpg
I actually had to paint both sides. For some reason the skull was this weird, like yellowish color. So, I took a small piece of bone
into Lowes and had them color match me some paint, which came out phenominally well, then I spray painted the metal side. I used a brilliant
metal paint, but for some reason when I clear coated it, it took the brilliance out. At first I was upset, but actually, I'm pretty happy with this
resulting color. Then I hand brush painted the human side, (and yes the teeth, more mixed paint from Lowes).
And stuff going back on.
http://img710.imageshack.us/img710/6024/imag0106r.jpg
http://img849.imageshack.us/img849/3751/imag0107mp.jpg
The two sleeved sets of wire you see there are from the two VRMs. More on that next update.
http://img850.imageshack.us/img850/3429/imag0034dp.jpg
I did end up fixing that gap, just fyi.
And in case you were wondering, the led is wired directly to the leads on the hard drive itself, so when the hard drive is trying to boot, the eye flickers
along with the movement.
http://img42.imageshack.us/img42/9826/imag0082u.jpg

Wow! Epic skull right there. Nice job. :up:
It takes some serious BRAINS to get it where it's at!

OK, this will probably be the last update, then I'll do some finished shots...
This is where the lost progress pics would have been nice. So, we're gonna have to use our imaginations a little....
Screwy angle of the same picture as I used before. The shell is pulled off, and this is looking straight down. I think most, if not all, the wiring is actually done at this point.
http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/2803/imag00562.jpg
There's the smoker unit. It's actually elevated off the floor by a few washers, cause it gets hot!
A backside shot. Three buttons; one for the pump, one for the led's, and one for smoke.
I know, it's kinda scary in there! I didn't feel like doing much for wire management, except make sure no wires are touching anything hot. Once the shell is riveted on, it ain't coming back off!
http://img703.imageshack.us/img703/1276/imag00602a.jpg
On the left side, you'll see something poking out, right behind that gear piece. That's a rheostat to control the fan speed on the smoker unit.
OK so here is a pretty weird picture... I actually went under my desk and took a picture looking straight up at the bottom of this thing.
The three wing nuts are the smoker unit bolts, and you can see the led's mounted.
http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/8804/imag0062vz.jpg
No?
How about now?

(With flash)
http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/8641/imag0065p.jpg
Also mounted in some led's in the glass skull, as well.
Now, I don't know what happened to these pictures. Something with my camera phone, I guess when I use the zoom, it like, scrambles two pictures together, or something. It doesn't happen until later, and I don't have any other pitures of this. So, basically, just look at the bottom half of this picture. If anybody knows how to fix it, please, enlighten me. What's really f'd up is in the list thumbnail view on the computer, it's fine. It's only when I view the pic by itself. Same thing on the phone itself, and my wife's phone does the same thing.
grr...
http://img855.imageshack.us/img855/7771/imag0067mw.jpg

Covert wiring :D
http://img194.imageshack.us/img194/6341/imag0068z.jpg
This is my power supply. It's an adapter that came with an electric cooler. Output is 12VDC, and enough current that I can feel confident it can
handle the job.
http://img814.imageshack.us/img814/2269/imag00472.jpg
At this point, the shell is ready to be remounted. I also made a skirt, out of several pieces of material, which should look familiar...
http://img546.imageshack.us/img546/961/imag0032eo.jpg
http://img39.imageshack.us/img39/4472/imag0033k.jpg
These are mounted using angle iron screwed to the base.
Evolution;
http://img833.imageshack.us/img833/2818/imag0114h.jpg
http://img813.imageshack.us/img813/3693/imag0115rp.jpg
Here is a motion sensor mounted. This is what's going to turn on the HDD in the skull. See, the hard drive works, but after it fails to boot, it won't work again until power is turned off, then back on. This motion sensor, with it's adjustable timer, solves that problem, plus creates a stimulus reaction, which is cool too.
http://img861.imageshack.us/img861/999/imag0113vn.jpg
The black hose stuffed with wire there contains as follows;
Wires for the led's. A rheostat is installed in the skull, it will be a dimmer for the led's in the base and glass skull.
power wires for pump.
lead from motion sensor. There is a 5PDT relay in the skull that also acts as a splitter, to provide power to the two VRM's.
Constant power, for the relay
And of course, a common ground. So, while it looks like it's just part of the show (so to speak) it actually has a very important function.
You know what, I lied. There is going to be one more update after this lol. Sorry this update was kinda, dirty... Bad pics, missing shots.... Such an ameteur

OK this should be the last update, then I'll post a handful of finished pics... I've been working on calculus for literally like 12 hours so my brain is kinda cooked. Still, hopefully this post is not as rough as my last one lol.
Some bondo work, to shape and hide lines and rivets;

Working my way across with sand. I kept referring to this part as "sanding." Seemed kinda confusing lol. What I did was paint the surface with contact cement, then spread the sand over it, section by section. When dry, I used a dry clean paintbrush to brush the loose sand off. If another layer was needed I just repeated.

Bolted the skull on. Believe me this was an exciting time for me!
A giant pain in the arse, too. Had to feed hoses, hook up to water pump, which of course had to be un-mounted to do so, then feed the black hose through the hole in the top of the cranium, then hook all those wires up. Funtimes :up:

More progress;

Cage hung, and pump is actually on in these pics. It's alive!

An attempted night shot of the Screen on the side of the head. If you see in the old pics where the top is off, you'll see that I glued a piece of circuit board to the pump. There is an led that comes on steady when the relay is tripped;

It was so hard to try and get a picture that does it real justice. It really is sweet looking, if you ask me.

Tomorrow, the conclusion! But have no worries, I still have another surprise for you!!

It is done!!!
One thing I want to mention. 'Member my original plan, to use an oxygen mask? Well, that was still the plan, but somehow, the mask in question had come up missing. So, in my searches for a replacement, I began eyeballing a gask mask I have. What? Everybody has a gas mask collection, right?
http://img267.imageshack.us/img267/9384/imag0071d.jpg
Anyways a regular gask mask wouldn't work. Too much coverage, plus, while it is an adult size skull, it's just a skull, no face. Therefore regular mask wouldn't fit. Enter; child gas mask;

A large (Size 3) child gas mask will work just fine.
Cut, following the line that separates human/ machine side. I didn't want to cover the nose entirely, simply because I like the mesh :up:

Hose ran up, so that the smoke come out through the mask.
Finished pics;

(I kinda wanted to bring these hoses in at the wrist, but I'm worried about them eventually kinking.)

And I leave you with this; my favorite pic. An action shot. You can see the smoke coming out of the mask, and the beam of light from the eye in the smoke.

To those who followed this, thank you. I want to apologize for the hiatus during progress, which seems to be a matter of course for me, but I won't.
So much good came out of taking a break. New materials, new processes, new ideas, all happen during time. Some of my best ideas have come to me while I actually wasn't even working. The only thing I will add, is a video of it in action in a little while. Thanks! :banana:
