I guess I'll never understand why people will so easily drop $200+ on the motherboard alone.

Let's see...

$230 for AMD X6 1090T, mobo is $150 tops

$1000 for Intel X6 980/990x, mobo starts at $200

I doubt that anyone can actually "see" the difference in speed anyway. This whole price war comes down to bragging rights entirely.

Nah, I've seen the difference when rendering video. If you're loading all the cores 100% for say, 3-5 days, due to the larger quantity and faster memory on the Intel chip, the Intel will likely finish the same job 10-15 hours before the AMD. This means that a company or individual can start a new job that much sooner. For a business, this can be worth much more than the $800 price difference.
If you're just gaming, there's no difference.
I currently have a q6600 that I used to render 3D animation videos with. It was really good when I bought it, but it's an old piece of crap now. I'm currently looking at a 1090T Black for a new gaming/multimedia rig.

see, I don't do that stuff, so my Q6600 is well suited for my gaming/light photoshop/light sketchup needs :D

Oh, I'm not implying that anyone elses' q6600 is old crap...mine has been abused hard for around 4 years now. It's pretty haggard and just can't keep up with more recent CPUs in the benchmarks, even when well OC'd. It needs a walker or one of those little powered carts that old people drive around.

well I just upgraded TO a Q6600 a few months ago. from...dare I say...a Pentium D930  lol

I remember when Pentium Ds were supreme. I had a Pentium 4 then...but I also remember when that Pentium 4 was supreme compared to my Pentium II and III...I can't even begin to imagine going back further than that.:D
Someone should somehow bench a bunch of 90s chips against the new 990X to see just how far we've come in 15-20 years.

I almost pissed myself when I got the math co-processor for my 8086.

Hey, I've got a 486/33DX, and a PIII550. What should I throw at it?

Hmm, I could pull out my old Leading Edge D2, see if it still works...according to wikipedia it has a 386 but I can't for the life of me find it on the board.

The difference between i7s and Phenoms is bigger than you might think for very high end gaming rigs. Tom's Hardware did a Phenom x6 based SBM machine with GTX480 SLI a while ago, and found a i7 based PC with GTX460 SLI to be faster in almost every situation.

Of course, however, the extreme editions are ridiculous unless you have money to burn. A 950 makes a lot of sense, is comparably priced to the AMD flagship and performs pretty close to a Phenom x6 even in applications that will use 6 cores, while thrashing it in games.

This announcement has been expected for about a year and has arrived right on the promised schedule. (LGA1366 P65/H65/Q65 should also arrive in Q1, LGA1366 X68+ICH11 mobos should be out Q2 ... see roadmap (http://xtreview.com/images/Intel%20X68%20ICH11.jpg).)

I'm mildly disappointed; Intel initially announced 512MB L2 on each core, not 256MB. I suppose 130W and $999 have something to do with their final i7-990X design. At least the "older" i7 tech will all shuffle down the price line a bit.

Of course, then you'd need a new mobo and possibly RAM.....

I just upgraded to one from my P4 3.4GHz. Meanwhile, my friends are upgrading to i7 950s.

That roadmap also indicates a continuation of LGA1156, so forgive me if I ignore it entirely :P

Overincredulous performance gains between my old X2 6000+ @ 3.0ghz and this phenom II X4 955 @ 3.7Ghz

I went from 18fps in dirt2 to 77~90fps with the same video card, GTA4 went from 8~14fps (unplayable) to 55~60fps

new video card put me above 100fps in dirt2 on 1920x1200 4xmsaa ultra settings.

i remember my Duron 1800+ / 320MB-SD / Geforce 4ti as being a pretty good computer.

Funny going back and trying old video games like half life 1 or soldier of fortune and getting 800fps when your original system struggled to get 60 lol

I remember my AMD 486DX4/120 w/ 16MB worth of SIMMs and a VLB S3 card being the bomb. I could run DOS4GW Doom @ ~30fps. Without any fans. Booya.

Technology changes. Win7 won't let me play Doom slower than about 10,000fps (impossible to be accurate; I get killed before I even have a chance to pause the game).

Great little flash shooters/hackers. Except you can't duck. And no automap (Tab key won't work in the browser).

Are you able to play it with Dosbox, though?
