Ok so I want to pick up 3 more 500GB Caviar Black drives and do a raid 1+0 on them. Being striped and mirrored, will I have to reinstall windows after I get them all hooked up? Or can I hook them up then configure it and it'll be fine?

You'd have to reformat. Fresh installs are sexier anyways.

Creating the array will destroy any and all data on each drive. So if windows is on one of them, it will be gone. Make sure you backup anything you want to save beforehand on a non-RAID drive.

screw it then, it's not worth the hassle. I just did a fresh install a couple months ago, I'm not in the mood to do another lol

If you have an extra drive with enough harddrive space you can image your current drive to a file. Install your drives and setup your RAID set, then just image the file back to your hdd. Something like Acronis, Ghost, or Clonezilla would handle this easily. We do it all the time at the office.

Just send the drives to me, I'll put them to good use. I'll trade you some green LEDs in return!

Isn't there supposed to be some kind of issue with the Black drives in RAID too? I think that's why they made the RE3 drives. Maybe. I might be confused or misinformed on this topic.

yup, i personally use Ghost as it seems to work the best for me. i have all my installs backed up after a fresh install of them.

well I decided it wasn't worth the hassle for something that's not really needed. I went to microcenter today and picked up some things for Arctic Cat and also came home with a new Logitech Z506 5.1 system instead of a bunch of HDDs lol
