...

What happens if you do it while the computer is running?

...

Who is going to test this for us?

Easy, it sits there until you take it out again.

Oooh, you mean with the microwave on as well? :P

There would be much sparking, and probably not much else going on. Also, if you jury-rig the door open while it's running so you can have the cables running out, make sure you're nowhere near it....or within line-of-sight...or...yeah...

You ask the question. You must test it. End of story.

I don't know about having it running, but this answers the first question

Most likely there will be a spark somewhere that will ruin a connector, chip, etc and the computer would just lock up the same way as if you pulled the C-drive while the computer was running.

If one of the arcs grounds to a connector, the mobo will be done in addition to the HDD. The magnetron will likely be toasted as well if it's allowed to keep running.

you're starting to see the point now

The metal must have been shaped just right. I honestly expected more arcing than that. They should have put it closer to the walls...

They should just take the door completely off and point the microwave at any electronics they find in the house! ...or take out the magnetron and remove all of its shielding!! Make us a video dr.walrus.

Anyone want to donate a netbook, then?

Fill a balloon with petrol, attach a piece of tin foil, place in microwave...

Actually that wouldn't do anything at all :)
The waves will scatter too much in an open environment to case any damage. Mythbusters has tested this by aiming the magnetrons of a dozen microwaves at the same spot... and nothing happened.
