What do you think of this layout?

I think it's crazy, but the whole qwerty thing is crazy and we learn it well enough. What did you use to make that?

It would drive me insane for a week and I'd adapt I guess.

I used the actual arrow keys on the bottom right for movement in FPS for years and never could get into the whole ASWD thing until I bought Fallout 3. That game locked up in the exact same spot every time I tried to play it. I gave up, sold the game, bought it again a year later to try it again with a new system, turned out to be a glitch in the key mapping. If I left the keys in the default settings it ran perfectly.

Now thanks to Bethesda's piss-poor programming I can finally use the "normal" gaming keys. Thanks, Bethesda!

The problem for me is the arrow keys and WASD is it hurts my wrist from the strange angles i've got to put my fingers in, and my wrist as well.

That format (developed by a friend) is uber wrist and finger friendly.

if you try it (just sitting here) and act like your moving around, you'll notice your fingers are almost always straight, and your wrist never moves.

It also lets you do things that aren't possible with the arrow keys and WASD

like go backwards and strafe left while looking left (do a backwards circle) or jump while running forward and then quickly ducking (like jumping through a window)

You can also do constant circles with out the need for moving a single finger (S-D-F-Space-S-D-F-Space)

Really lets you jump through the window unexpectedly and mow every single person down in the room while you look like a vegetable sitting in a chair

My gf always laughs because i look like im sleeping in front of the computer, she'll look at the screen and i'm doing first person shooter ridiculous s@#t

lol, Merc Stealth keyboard (http://www.google.ca/images?q=merc+stealth+keyboard).

It's crap for general typing/programming, since I'm a heavy numpad user and thus need to [NumLock] every time I switch between numbers and arrows/cursor keys. But it just can't be beat for gaming. Not a problem if you have two keyboards.

After extensive use, I think the gamepad layout could be tweaked a tiny bit. The two rows of number keys are 1-6 and 7-11, which causes me to mix all my 5-6-7 keypresses up in times of frenzied stress; 1-5/6-10 or even 1-6/7-12 would probably work better. Also, I'm used to 2-3 being above the W, whereas the Merc has 3-4; shifting the entire row half a key to the right would make it more ideal. My Merc looks more and more like a modding project each time I get killed by it (plus I wanna turn a Parallax Propeller into the ultimate keyb controller, and install diode mechanicals for full NKRO, etc).

Looks like what old(er) games like Tribes 2 used to have as a default keyboard layout. I liked it back then, but since have adapted to wasd like everyone else :/

Ah, that's a pic of the Merc Stealth I mentioned (and linked) above.

They should cost about $80-$100 (USD) and are at many places like Future Shop and Best Buy ... probably not really worth buying on eBay.

Excellent (though not quite perfect) for playing games. Not so great for daily main keyboard typing use. They're a bit large, surprisingly heavy, built like panzers, and will last nearly forever; ideally suited to modding. The backlighting is phenomenal and even better than seen on cameras, though the colour/brightness options are a bit limited. The "Z-Engine" software they require seems a bit clunky but it works well enough.

Pretty much default for me...
WASD - move around, A+D strife
E - Use
R - Reload
F - 'nade
T - talk
Shift - crouch, or C depending on the game

My friend uses the right mouse click to crouch and I think shift to zoom/aim

Yup, Just with a couple adjustments.

Raise your hand if you can play a video game for 15 hours without wrist strain.

ESDF is growing in popularity, it allows easier left-hand access to a few more keys.

A few gamers use ASDF (left/back/forward/right, or whatever) ... supposedly more efficient since fingers are never lifted, plus the homekey nubs are easy to locate.
