hey this is my first major mod! (besides the window in my PS2) i will be putting a comp inside of a custom built subwoofer encloser. This project will be pretty stealth on the outside (drives, fans) but when u look through the 12in. sub hole...you see the com with cathodes......keep in mind taht me and tyler "tybrenis" are only 14..:D :D

Darn it!! I have an idea just like that!! Except without the plexiglass window. In place of that window is supposed to be a grill. And what do ppl use grills for? :D

Anyways, can't wait for this project to commence!!

RangerDanger

I havent found the right wood so i figure i should start stealthing the drives.

i cut out a piece of 1/3 plexi using a dreml reinforced cut off disc that i will use to stealth the drive. To hold the piece of plexi on i will be using SCOTCH Mounting Tape..(double sided sticky tape) because its strong, easy to find, and cheap. To open this drive You simply press the plexi...no need to remount the button.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h152/Rangerdanger360/DSCF0734.jpg

since i dont have the original drive cover....there is a bit of a gap...so i had to put on 3 striped of this tape to prevent the drive hitting the open button when it coses.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h152/Rangerdanger360/DSCF0735.jpg

It works great. Next i will be covering the plexi with carpet so taht when i build the carpeted box....it will blend right in.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h152/Rangerdanger360/DSCF0736.jpg

You might be thinking "with all that tape the plexi probably sticks out and looks dumb...but here is a pci too show it it dosent.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h152/Rangerdanger360/DSCF0740.jpg

I might have more pics of progress tomorow!!! Stay Alert!!:D

i need a mobo slot and pci slots for the new box so i will be using the one out of my old rig.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h152/Rangerdanger360/DSCF0749.jpg

I will be using 2 drill bits a smaller 1 and a larger 1.. the first bit is to go though the rivet and the second bit is to pop of the cap.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h152/Rangerdanger360/DSCF0750.jpg

I have the brace cut out next step...trace it onto the wood. I will then paint the brace blk..to blend into the blk carpet i will be using.

Yay more pics!:D

I traced out the

pieces.http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h152/Rangerdanger360/DSCF0752.jpg

Then when i was removing the hd..i realized i can use the cage ...just paint it blk and adjust a few things.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h152/Rangerdanger360/DSCF0753.jpg

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h152/Rangerdanger360/DSCF0755.jpg

This is mostly likely be the front design....a 12 in hole (with no chicken crumbs macoroni cheese, fork, or bbq sauce)..and 2 ports. (sry if i made u hungry:p )

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h152/Rangerdanger360/DSCF0756.jpg

Heres a closeup of the port that i bought, its really a insert for pvc pipe, its just short of 2in deep....and fans will be attached to the back of these. (still deciding weather i should cut the plastic grill out of it...none the less im painthing it blk.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h152/Rangerdanger360/DSCF0757.jpg

Now that the 20in x 14in piece is cut out...i can cut the pci slots, mobo slot, and psu exit tomorow.

http://i63.photobucket.com/albums/h152/Rangerdanger360/DSCF0759.jpg

Well its today (just edited the post) and i cut out the exit for the psu and the mobo slots....nice fit :D

Easy enough to fix with extensions. You can even make your own, the parts are available at your local electronics store for cheap.

test on scrap plexi.

make sure you get plastic paint for the ports. regular paint doesnt bite in and will chip off quite easily (experience talking).

another idea would be to router the edges of the psu opening and recess the plexi for a flush look (thats also how the plexi is installed in band pass boxes)
you wont get round corners with a router but if you rounded the plexi aswell it would look really sharp

Coming along nicely! It's just my opinion, but I think those ports would look better if you did cut those thick bars out and maybe replace them with something lighter. But it still looks good.

RangerDanger
04-22-2006, 12:11 PM
Today i am buying another piece of wood for the bottom....then for the sides and the top ill be using a different type of wood my dad brought home for me. :D....and what do u mean some lighter?....its hollow plastic.

crazybillybob
04-22-2006, 02:30 PM
When he says lighter I think he means thinner. The thickness of th cross bars in that pvc guard is a little ummm Heavy, it's going to cut down a bit on air flow and it just looks a little out of place....thinning them a bit (half or so) would "lighten" the over all look (meaning your eyes would pass over them instead of being drawn to them like a wart on a hot chick nose).....

Just something to think about.

Crazybillybob

RangerDanger

word to the wize. I set my 15inch RF (2000 watt dual coil) next to my computer and it;

a) ruined all the data on my harddrive
b) started pulling pixels across my LCD

Make it open vertically. Use something like drawer runners and have the top so that it just lifts straight up.
If you could motorise it, even better...

tybrenis
05-03-2006, 08:42 PM
Always the simple solution: hinges.

What I did for my case is I put little acrylic squares on the edges, and then drilled and tapped holes in the acrylic. Above the the holes in the squares, I drilled holes in the cover. So, the screws just go through the holes in the cover, and into the blocks. Since you are using MDF, you wouldn't have to tap things and work with dangerous chemicals like methylene chloride....

I would do the following, if you don't want to make it open vertically like xmastree suggested (good idea, xmastree!). I made a SketchUp model of what I mean:
