At this point some of this is just rumors, but Tweak Town is reporting (http://www.tweaktown.com/news/18898/rumortt_amd_is_up_for_sale/index.html) that AMD has fired it's top brass. CEO Dirk Meyer was forced out last month, COO Bob Rivet and strategy chief Marty Seyer last week. This has left AMD wide open for a take over / buyout. Adding to the rumor-mill is that Dell is interested in AMD.

Anyone have any more information on this? I have been a loyal AMD customer since their XP line. I hope they pull it together and get back on track soon.

I doubt AMD is going anywhere yet. I figure they will do some restructuring, some chapter 11, etc etc.. its too big to go down quickly. We need them to stay around just to keep pricing competitive!

AMD bought by Dell? Is that something that could be considered a sign of impending apocalypse?

This... hopefully. Nobody likes a monopoly.

The staff firings are not rumor, they already have people acting in those positions at this moment and last I checked, they're not even in trouble. They're still releasing public statements about upcoming products and about new technologies we've heard little about thus far (like an interview about Bullet Physics and the possibility of PhysX on AMD cards, on Bit's front page) so I think the statements are unfounded.

Also, considering the new Macs are going to be Llano, Zacate and Bulldozer powered, I think they're fine.

I doubt Dell would purchase AMD. There is a huge difference between building cheap systems and state of the art CPU's and GPU's. This is just too far outside of Dell's core competency. There could also be some conflict of interest issues as well.

Time will tell, but I think AMD will be just fine. Of course I am always the optimist.

This won't happen for a few reasons. Dell has no interest in doing such things, they like to be able to offer a diverse computing experience across their products. Intel, AMD, ATI, Nvidia, they have them all.

Another point, is that AMD and ATI still haven't REALLY integrated yet, their offices are still distance, and R&D for both sides still have their own buildings. The only venture with both sides of the company has been the recent APU.

EDIT: Look at TweekTown's sources. I would hardly trust either of those sites. The Fool has been known for made investment judgement.

I don't care about AMD CPU's anymore, but I hate nVidia.

AMD is going no where. Dell has no reason to buy AMD, anyway.
