My laptop had been acting really buggy lately and its been 17 months since my last format and install. I just tired looking for the saved passwords folder and the bookmarks folder and I can not seem so find them. Did Mozilla move them from the FF dir to somewhere else?
I forget when they implemented it, but FF stores saved passwords in an sql db file. IIRC it's still in your FF profile directory though. I think it's the 'signons.sqlite' file. The bookmarks will definitely be in the json files in the 'bookmarkbackups' directory, but I qould imagine they're also stored somewhere in the parent directory.
If I were you, I would just copy the whole FF profile directory and import it into your new install.

for book marks you can go to bookmarks, organize all book marks import and back up. thats usally how i get my book marks back as for saved passwords and user names i have no idea.
If you're really scraping, you could always use nirsoft (http://nirsoft.net)'s firefox password recovery tool.

Well its not for recovery, I really need to format this machine and install firefox fresh. For well over a year now, I have been dealing with FF not retaining cookies after a botched add-on install. Plus it would be nice to finally switch this laptop from vista to W7. I just can not afford to loose all of my passwords or my 500+ bookmark list.

I just did that for the bookmarks. Now to figure out the passwords. There are close to 200 in there.

You can probably just copy the file from the FF profile directory and drop it in the new one. You can check the file by moving it somewhere else and running the nirsoft utility I mentioned on it.

Mozilla recommends just moving the whole profile over. I think that's what I am going to do
