Hello Everyone,
Allow me to introduce myself shortly. My name is ASPHIAX and I live in Boxtel (Netherlands). Just turned 33 and have been occupied with computers from the age of 17. (making noise - dont have another word for it - with fasttracker and fruitloops :smoker:)
Started out wayback with an MSX and Commodore 64 and lately ventured into watercooling and have been HOOKED ON IT EVER SINCE!!!
What do i do when i am not thinking about modding: I am a business consultant at Belgacom and am designing VoIP and Unified Communications networks for the enterprise customers.
It all started about 3 months ago. After extensive reading on the fora (this one being a favorite!) I started out with my first watercooling project. A Dragonlord K62 with an XSPC 750H2O kit, couple of fans and an additional radiator. All good fun but it soon wasnt enough any more and i found myself cutting into my case with power tools and bending plexiglas with my wife's hairdryer. (which actually doesnt work, lol) I can post some pics of it, just a nice complete pc.
I needed something bigger ... One night i was cruising the web looking for something fun to build when the scifi channel caught my attention. It was the start tune of Star Trek Voyager ! The same second i was thrown 15 years back into time and saw myself (after a intense night of clubbing, still buzzing of the dutch national product) watching Star Trek.
Knew it in a heart beat :D
So here it is : the USS Eurisko , Intrepid Mark II Class
http://i51.tinypic.com/5v83lx.jpg
Technical Data :
Class: Intrepid Mark II
Type: Scientific exploration, general bad-ass
Crew: 141
Length: 344 meter
Hight: 66 meter
Width: 133 meter
Decks: 15
Holodecks: 2
Mass: 702.000 metrische ton
Max Speed: warp 9.975
Sustained Max Warp: Warp 9.985, 1 hour.
Cruisingspeed: warp 8
Cargo Holds: 4
Shuttle Platforms: 1
Armament: 8 Type X Phaser arrays,
4 Photon Torpedo Launchers (Stock 150)
After some serious digging on the web i found these designs. I just cant give enough credit to whoever made them (partly because i dont know  ) but: MAN isnt she pretty ...
I always found the original design form the serie a little to toy-like with all the markings and windows. This isnt! This is Rough, Industrial, Bad-ass!
Voyager-Angry --- Must kill Borg !!!
Man I'm itching to start this build ...
http://i55.tinypic.com/o0bgk1.jpg
Let me try to explain what i want to do.
I will be building the frame out of MDF. Easy to manipulate and cheap. Was thinking of building it out of plexiglas but that is going to be way expensive and a good thermofolding device (sorry dont know the english word for it) is also expensive and hard to find a second hand one.
Wood is better for now.
I will mount my current Q6600 CPU, Gigabyte EP45 MoBo and Platinum XTC 1066 RAM on top of the baseplate (see pics for more clarification)
2 HDD's will be mounted in the nose section and to supply the airflow for the mobo and the hdd's, the top and bottom sections of the saucer (where the blue dots are) will be drilled and covered with a hex mesh. A (or more) Blue CCFL's will supply a blue-ish glow making the whole looking more agressive, like the led strips over the headlights of the new AUDI's.
The main deflector dish will be supplied with a 12 or 14 CM blue led fan immediately followed by the PSU. Behind the PSU a 240 RAD (rather a 360 but that is dependant on the available space) blowing the warm air directly out of the ship by means of fanholes with hex mesh
I am going to try to follow the designs as closely as possible and the "Dilithium Cooling Intake Manifolds" (blue dotted drilled holes in top and bottom) and the "Main Deflector Aft Target Array" (fanholes for the 360 radiator) will hopefully be the only big deviations.
I dont have a planned location for the pump, so that's "Pending Starfleet Approval"
The warp nacelles will be fitted with custom reservoirs with blue coolant. I am currently working with one of my potential sponsors for the res's.
The whole Pylons (including the warp nacelles) will be fitted with small electromotors that will be capable of making the ship warp ready (even though the Ablative armor would probably not allow it in the "real" world) But that is future work. Gotta leave some challenges right ...
As this is a Mid-Ship MotherBoard setup (heard that one before?), all the internal connections like VGA, HDMI, GB-Lan, Audio, USB ports will have to be extended to possibly the backside of the ship. I want it to be as clean as possible with absolutely no cables over the hull.
The top "canope" must be able to be removed easily to get to the internal harware setup for easy reconfig or placing new gfx cards.
When the frame is ready it is meant to be covered with a thick layer of foam. That needs to be sanded as per original design and i am going to engrave the armor plating. (looking forward to that job , NOT!)
The whole thing is going to be airbrushed with the help of a good friend and per original design colour scheme.
Well i wanted something bigger and this is a big as it is going to get. With a dimensions of 154cm (L) 60 cm (W) and 35 CM(H) it really is as big as its going to get!
This will keep me busy for quite some time!
I already did some work, here are the first updates,

Ok , here is the story so far.
After a couple of weeks of brainstaorming, making sketches, how wil it fit, what do I need, What will be the Dimensions, etc , it was time to get busy.
Luckely I have a huge whiteboard in my house where (enjoying a beer) i could draw and think visually.
Lets get some wood !
Little memory helper !
http://i54.tinypic.com/112cysj.jpg
Rough sketch, but hey it will all be covered in foam right ...
http://i56.tinypic.com/2rhl7no.jpg
The dimensions of the motherboard and the height restrictions in particular was driving me mad! I needed to take in account not only the hight of the Graka (dutch slang for GFX card) but the width of the MoBo (MOtherBOard) but also the tubing for the watercooling (WC), waterblock for the CPU, etc. So i made a mold (is that the correct term?) that would allow me to easily test out locations, moving it around the baseplate. Works beautifully !
http://i53.tinypic.com/6t008w.jpg `
http://i52.tinypic.com/ne8adi.jpg
http://i54.tinypic.com/novuqo.jpg
The next day. Put a rim onto the baseplat that will allow me to build the removable canope so i can access the hardware when it is finished. no idea how this will look when it is covered in foam.
http://i52.tinypic.com/66j0g7.jpg
The start of the framework, made easy by the mold !
http://i54.tinypic.com/292piso.jpg
Gotta make sure its stable enough for the foam and trasnportation. also a good indication of where the HDD's are going to be mounted.
http://i54.tinypic.com/347fwgy.jpg
What the idea here is to put foam on top of the framework where all the wood comes together, so i built a case to keep it stable.
http://i56.tinypic.com/2ywh75w.jpg
The First plating. Was a hell of a job to get the correct angle en I am still not satisfied. It looks to high. The slits at the bottom are going to be used for the foam to reach both sides, making it more stable.
http://i54.tinypic.com/rbea9d.jpg
The angle is off i think, kust cant put my finger on it whats wrong ...
http://i52.tinypic.com/fe4fav.jpg
The curvature is nice though
http://i52.tinypic.com/34flkbo.jpg
Ande the final state, just slammed some pieces of wood together to get an impression on the tail. this will be replaced by something else.

Here are a couple of pics on the airflow .
Please note i am not a graphical designer, i do not have any 3d skill (Download Direct2Brain anyone?)
These are the "Dilithium Cooling Intake Manifolds" on the top, the bottom will have something similar. The HDD's will be mounted over the bottom intake manifolds so they will get some cooling also. The whole intake of air is also pushed over the motherboard by a large fan in the first support rib inside the casing.
http://i54.tinypic.com/2u76bv8.jpg
http://i53.tinypic.com/vx8rc.jpg
The only thing that is worrying me is the intake in the green circle. a few cm further i am pushing warm air out through 3 x 120MM fans. so there is a possibility of a feedback loop.

Ok, took a step back and redid the whole project in my mind. The dimensions of the ship didn't feel right. there was something off. Everyone who saw her in the flesh immedaitely said so. To high, sides to steep, nose to short compared to the width. Back to the drawing board it is.
Width versus high calculated where the hight was the known. Length and depth calculations with the outcome. Redid the ellipse of the saucer compared to the length of the tail.
And guess what !!! 32(!) CM to short and 9cm less wide than the designs. Messed up the design to model ratio's.
Slammed on a few pieces of MDF and it looked and felt a lot better! A nice smooth aerodynamic design instead of a large bump on the baseplate.
Only with 154CM length, 63CM width and 32CM hight it is not small anymore. I can see myself moving my pc with a forklifter just to connect a USB cable. This will not do ...
Did a lot of searching, reading, asking questions and i finally settled on a Epoxy/glasfiber body.
This will ensure the ship is still movable and will give me the strength i need.
Just on a side note: Funny how a build can go from slamming a few pieces of wood together to full model building. (if you want to do it right)

Ok here is the first recap of the weekend
My wife is watching Idols or the voice of holland or some crap like that so time for me to do some damage  !
Restarted the whole build, this time I used styropor foam (also called roofmate)
http://i55.tinypic.com/25sy8o5.jpg
The Old and The New
http://i54.tinypic.com/54svnq.jpg
I am fixing everything temporarily with sateh spikes (normally used for the barbecue)
http://i52.tinypic.com/20zv9f7.jpg
Did all the rough work with a powertool
http://i53.tinypic.com/14dm5xv.jpg
For the finer work i bought a styropor cutter. Just a piece of metal wire with 2 AA batteries. Unfortunately it was to fine ...
http://i51.tinypic.com/aadn36.jpg
Man what a job !!!
There were some times where i really though i was going to quit and forget modding forgood...
The rough work SUCKS !!!!!!!!!
http://i51.tinypic.com/w1eexl.jpg
Slowly it is taking shape
http://i55.tinypic.com/2jcx3kw.jpg
http://i52.tinypic.com/309ocvk.jpg
http://i52.tinypic.com/11jyulf.jpg
After the rough work it is a matter of taking a breadknife and peeling the foam off. Even though it looks annoying, this is the better part of the forming of the model. She's taking shape in front of your eyes and you can get some decent detail in there.
http://i55.tinypic.com/20pzcic.jpg
The gypsum sanding paper (metal paper with little holes to let the gypsum escape) is degrading fast. There is some fight in this piece of foam
http://i52.tinypic.com/29nwdg2.jpg
http://i52.tinypic.com/rartvm.jpg
My wife was intensely happy with me !!!
http://i53.tinypic.com/1692nba.jpg
Placed the old deflector tunnel to get an idea of the model.
http://i56.tinypic.com/33xwhzk.jpg
http://i52.tinypic.com/szzdvm.jpg
Quickly placed the tail to see how long its gonna be. 1,54 meters is quite a stretch!
Oh yeah, the black circles are area''s i need to attack with the breadknife
http://i53.tinypic.com/2rwkm5z.jpg
Trimming her piece by piece. Tried all sorts of knives, the breadknife still reigns
http://i53.tinypic.com/2yw8lu9.jpg
http://i56.tinypic.com/2127t6w.jpg
Without noticing it, you tend to trim off quite a bit
http://i54.tinypic.com/23mvvwn.jpg
I took some tape and started to place the drawing of the armor plating. Tomorrow i will start cutting away at the deep pieces making sure the drawing will get the proper depth.

Ok here is another recap
Got up really early in the morning to make some filler
http://i51.tinypic.com/29kz4fk.jpg
I had to make sure with this type of foam to use a cellulose based filler or it would reduce the model to blubber
http://i52.tinypic.com/bejpv.jpg
Sorry for the Dutch Guys, it says cellulose based
Nice and smooth
http://i51.tinypic.com/2zxovw0.jpg
I was not happy with the lines of the drawing of the model so i took out the tape and started anew...
http://i51.tinypic.com/2sbk677.jpg
The result !
http://i55.tinypic.com/14l7gw9.jpg
http://i51.tinypic.com/6y0bat.jpg
Ok, what i wanted to do is to make room for the hex mesh and the "DCIM" air intake holes.
What I did is I took a stanly knife (dont know is the correct English term?) and I cut out the drawing and with a pointed plyer "plucked" out the foam. This works fast and you can get good accuracy.
http://i52.tinypic.com/219xie9.jpg
HMMM : POPCORN !!!
http://i56.tinypic.com/5mb6v6.jpg
Does not take to much time also
http://i52.tinypic.com/1zvs95g.jpg
Finishing it off with a dremel on turbo setting. This also closes the foam (due to the heat) so the epoxy/fiber coat will not get into the model (well that's the theory behind it anyway :eyebrow:)
http://i56.tinypic.com/2dhek3a.jpg
DCIM and large depth of armor finished
http://i52.tinypic.com/2rz5b4k.jpg
Both sides finished. I found out that by making a lesser deep cut into the foam with the stanley knife, you would automatically "pluck" less foam and could easily alter the depth.
http://i56.tinypic.com/sx1z09.jpg
so this side with the armor to dcim barrier already completed
http://i51.tinypic.com/200ad7t.jpg
DO you feel lucky... punk ?
http://i52.tinypic.com/2exx2rk.jpg
Quickly placed the old deflector tunnel to get a better view of the model
http://i54.tinypic.com/2yp12rd.jpg
Also did the amor plating rims
http://i56.tinypic.com/2hxbxnn.jpg
BAD-ASS !!!
http://i56.tinypic.com/2nqu1hz.jpg
Not completely happy with the symmetry but its getting along nicely
http://i52.tinypic.com/9ats7a.jpg
Sometimes i tend to forget i need to build a complete watercooled pc in there aswell
Here is a view with an extremely simple filter but it is kinda like what i want to do

Ok, Here are another set of pics
Spend the whole morning thinking, looking, sketching on how to place the Canope on the baseplate. The baseplate is a MDF panel on which the Mobo and radiators will be placed on top and the PSU, HDD's and pump(s) on hanged on the bottom. It will form the backbone of the case (if you can still call it a case :D) Together with the Canope on top, the Deflector Tunnel on the bottom and the pylon partition at the back it will need to provide the rigidity and connection point for all the hardware and the electromotors for the movable Pylons and warpnacelles.
*EDIT : Ablative Armor actually does not allow warp (as far as i can tell) So the EURISKO will devaite from that point by allowing the ship to reach warp configuration.
http://memory-alpha.org/wiki/Ablative_armor
The baseplate!
I made the baseplate a couple of cm smaller than the canope.
http://i53.tinypic.com/2qx1bhw.jpg
http://i53.tinypic.com/11qqyzb.jpg
Here's a little trick I found. I only want to cut to the exact depth of the baseplate. So i measured the thrickness of the baseplate.
http://i53.tinypic.com/2d8qn2f.jpg
marked it with tape on the knife
http://i53.tinypic.com/jpen1z.jpg
If the knife flows along nicely through the foam, if it starts "jumping" you're to deep. EASY!
http://i55.tinypic.com/v641lz.jpg
Let the plucking begin!
http://i54.tinypic.com/xf59at.jpg
This weekend also POPCORN!
http://i52.tinypic.com/2egcosw.jpg
Needed to get the middle piece out. Not a quick job.
http://i55.tinypic.com/wbfp5s.jpg
Perfect Fit! Exactly the right depth. The canope now has a wide support rim on the mdf When the canope gets covered with epoxy/glassfiber.
http://i53.tinypic.com/27xjlsy.jpg
Also filled the little holes and cracks in the deflector tunnel. Also made the wing partition. It looks a bit big but these are the unfished elements. The Tunnel looks a bit strange but that is an optical issue.
http://i52.tinypic.com/2ziod9c.jpg
Quickly put the whole thing together. i cant remember how many times i have done that. got to keep checking

Ok here is a short update !
Fan Layout (92 mm scythe fans) integrated into the lower saucer section
http://i55.tinypic.com/wt9ert.jpg
started work on the DCIM's and armour plating
http://i54.tinypic.com/6ofx4y.jpg
Tricky Business, The deflector tunnel was not properly formed. So I had to cut it up knowing I did not have enough foam left to replace it.
http://i53.tinypic.com/23s82t1.jpg
After a extremely helpfull visit to a guy who has been building his model airplanes for 30 years i have descided to take the negative/positive mold approach. So removed the tape and started filling the sides.
Big advantage is that i can rebuild the canope within hours if i screw up!

I will not bother you guys with pictures of the sanding and filling process but I have taking a old piece of mesh and cut it up to make more clear the "Dilithium Cooling Intake Manifold" idea.
I will place some fat CCFL's or LEDS behind the mesh.
Was a real task to get all the lining straight. Used a dremel to "sculpt" the filling and every night put on a layer of filling and sanding ...

But i am not quite there yet. The symmetrie is a little off, so out comes the trusted dremel !

Before and After a round of sanding

Missed the correct symmetrie a lot of times, used up a lot of foam making mistakes. I really had to sit down to think why I got it wrong all the time and how to get the impuls drives correctly out of the foam.

Finally the right symmetrie !!!!!

EPOXY
http://i53.tinypic.com/jttr90.jpg
I was not looking forward to this job. I knew that if i was to mess up, a couple of weeks of work would go down the drain. Full enthousiasme started this job then...
I dont have to much pictures of the actual Epoxy work as the plastic gloves covered in Epoxy prevented me from using my camera.
So I first used several layers of loosening wax on the model. Let these layers dry and covered the model with a thick layer of epoxy. The placing of the glasfiber cloth on the straight and flat surfaces is not a problem, but then there were the corners.
What a DRAMA !!!
I knew of the difficulties with straight corners with glassfiber but I did not expect it to be that bad. A to straight of a corner (close to 90 degrees) will mean that a bubbel of air gets trapped on top of the corner and a corner with a radius will form in the lower part. The radius is not that bad, you can use a filler to resolve it. The bubbel on top on the other hand is not ok at all.
You cant push it down by hand (tried it, keeps popping up) and when not treated it can cause the paint to pop off when even moderate force is used on the model let alone fly at warp 9 :eyebrow: So I had to cut the bubbels out and fill them with epoxy.
http://i51.tinypic.com/2el402e.jpg
For a layman simple forms and shapes are fairly easy. A complex shape like the EURISKO with several adjacent inner and outer corners is tough. Especially when there is a timelimit on the time epoxy can be used before it solidifies. For my next build I will think twice before using the material in this fashion again.
Here is the result!
http://i52.tinypic.com/2dran36.jpg
http://i55.tinypic.com/33z49bc.jpg
Seperate the canope from the deflector tunnel
http://i51.tinypic.com/119pefs.jpg
And back to the baseplate
http://i53.tinypic.com/33y1ic4.jpg
Started to empty the canope. In the end I did not choose to do the positive/nagative mould. The primairy reason is that I do not trust myself enough with the epoxy.
(I can hear you thinking .... Yes changed direction again!!!)
http://i52.tinypic.com/rtdxqo.jpg
The DCIM's can finally be opened
http://i55.tinypic.com/fxtk4w.jpg
Layer on layer deeper. Looks kinda like an old roman theater!
http://i51.tinypic.com/1igxop.jpg
Completely hollowed out the canope. Left some foam at strategic area's as the whole became encreasingly flexible and vulnarable. Due to the left foam the model will keep the intented form. I will put another layer of epoxy/glass on the inside making the canope around 2 cm's thick and much stronger.
http://i52.tinypic.com/1zeavf6.jpg
Canope is completely finished. At least on the inside there is now enough room for the hardware. the outer layer will be covered with filling and I will recreate the straight corners.
http://i56.tinypic.com/1zvydu9.jpg
So eventually it all came together. Had to do a lot of "On the Fly" adjustments but that is part of the fun for me. Thinking on my feet and adjusting where necessary.
As usual my wife was not so happy with me working on the model.

Here is a question I would like to share with you.
Excellent question. Dont know ! I will weigh the model.
The Canope is exactly 2.3 kg. It is just styrofoam with a layer of filling and a layer of epoxy and glasfiber. The baseplate is around 3,5 kg and I guess the deflector tunnel with the pylons will be about 2,5 Kg. The reservoirs with coolant will be 1 kilogram each. So the whole thing without the normal hardware will 10 to 11 kilograms or 20 to 22 pounds.
In comparison a lian-li PC-A77FA is around 9,2 Kg or 18,5 to 20 pounds.

Found a package at my house on friday.
The first Highflow order is in !
So here are the first starfleet approved USS EURISKO tech specs
The best radiators I could find. I am planning to overclock the system so i need all the cooling i can get. (also foam is a very good insulator so the less heat the better)
http://i53.tinypic.com/vnjoye.jpg
http://i52.tinypic.com/30vf18i.jpg
To get enough flow through a large ship like the EURISKO i need to have a strong pump. I have allowed room for a secondary laing pump if the circulation proves inadequate.
http://i56.tinypic.com/73miaw.jpg
the fans for on top of the radiators. These fans will be put into a push-pull configuration with the planned fans in the bottom saucer. This to improve the cooling even better. Due to the thick thermochill rads, space was an issue. So I opted for these ultra thin (12mm) Scythe fans
http://i56.tinypic.com/bfrvcm.jpg
The White Hot EPS Plasm Conduits will be made from the UV tubing from Feser

Here is the update for this weekend.
Started work on the canope and bottom saucer. One of the final dusty jobs.
http://i53.tinypic.com/24pf04m.jpg
All the bottom saucer parts glued to the baseplate
http://i53.tinypic.com/10xda2o.jpg
And added a layer of epoxy
http://i52.tinypic.com/dxgsck.jpg
http://i56.tinypic.com/dhd1xv.jpg
Started work on the Main Deflector
Found a sweet piece of plexiglas, cut a hole for the fan to suck in some air and sunk a piece of mesh into it.
http://i51.tinypic.com/opvzd.jpg
http://i53.tinypic.com/ddyge1.jpg
Cut a quick couple of pieces of depron to cover the edges. Now I have to wait for the deflector tunnel to be put into the filler and epoxy before i can complete it.
http://i54.tinypic.com/mx2ctv.jpg
http://i51.tinypic.com/160o7z7.jpg
Started work on the warp nacelles with the Brink of Modding reservoirs.
Quickly realised the foam pylons and nacelles were not going to do the job. Setback of about a day. I wanted to hollow out the nacelles and put the hardware into it but the stiffness of the epoxy/glas layer would not stand up to hold the reservoirs, coolant, tubing and fittings. Let alone the mechanical forces that would work onto the epoxy/glass layer once the servo's have been fitted and the whole wing section can move up and down. Back to the drawing board it is ...
Found the solution. There will be MDF plating in this baby ! :D
http://i53.tinypic.com/4lhh6h.jpg
http://i52.tinypic.com/28is0af.jpg
Even in a starship they have to do weight reduction, so out with all the mdf we dont need!
http://i51.tinypic.com/2agus87.jpg
And a quick test fitting. This picture is with the old foam pylons (the new solution in beneath it)
http://i56.tinypic.com/34yph7k.jpg
with this solution the pylon/nacelle partition will be strong enough to handle anything.
http://i55.tinypic.com/33nawra.jpg
Made sure the dimensions stayed the same due to the relative sizes (nacelles vs canope vs width and height)
http://i55.tinypic.com/nmmij8.jpg
Side facing view with the reservoirs sticking out of the wood just slightly. This will be made better by the depron plates.
http://i51.tinypic.com/2hd5vzc.jpg
Just a quick test with a single led. working with WWWicked on a 10 fold led arrangement for the nacelles.
http://i55.tinypic.com/9k9zqe.jpg
Total view
http://i53.tinypic.com/9qz4vl.jpg
Could not resist testing the Main Deflector with the led. The MD needs to finished with the Angel Eyes or Frosted Led technique.

Thanks man, This is the first time I do a really big build so getting sponsors (and the fact that those companies want to tie their name to my work in particular) is very cool and a first for me. The stuff they sponsor is really helping me focus my (limited) funds on building the thing and keeping momentum. I think a build should take about 3 to 4 months max depending on complexity and getting the right stuff will sure help me build at least 2 a year.

And a quick fitting session to make sure it is in line with the model. Fitting and trying stuff on the model is something i do quite a lot and has prevented me from some major mistakes.
http://i53.tinypic.com/1z4yfrm.jpg
Need to cut a piece of silver mesh for the ouside alos.

Agent Mulder : Look Scully, a UFO !
http://i53.tinypic.com/2yvkow8.jpg
Total view. The fans are now at Warp 10 so the leds will dim quite a bit at a comfortable warp 5.
http://i55.tinypic.com/2d978r7.jpg
Put a ledstrip into the model just to check it out. Even though the effect is funny and maybe usefull for another build (dropped into idea box) it is offcourse not what i would like for this build. The light pollution is heavy due to the thin layer of foam and epoxy is transparant by nature so ... That are going to be a lot of filling and airbrush layers !
http://i56.tinypic.com/1219auv.jpg
The DCIM's will be covered with a black piece (strip actually) of mesh. Picture the blue glowing from behind the mesh and you got what i want to achieve. Will cut a piece tomorrow and post a new pic.

Once primed and painted, I doubt if the light will still bleed through.
Well even though the glow lines look very cool, they were not intended! I suspected the verticals would become bleeders but i hadnt anticipated the horizontal ones. (i actually played with the idea to do all the vertical ones with mesh but that would destroy the structural stiffness of the canope. The previous foto's didnt show the biggest bleeder!
Starship with sunroof anyone?
http://i51.tinypic.com/v686de.jpg
The Epoxy/glass layer dries transparantly. This is made of 6 layers of 160 grams glass with a 2 cm thick layer Epoxy. Virtually indestructable.
To talk about structural stiffnes of the model here are some more details.
The Canope is made of about 1 cm layer of XPS foam (they make spoilers for race cars out of this stuff) , thick filling layer (ok, not as thick everywhere, see the bleeding light effect) and several layers of 160 grams glassfiber with epoxy on the inside and outside.
I think together these 2 cases with the K62 having a 280 rad in the hood are about 10-12 kg!

It's an impressively sturdy build you have there and no doubt :D Have you thought about maybe trying to mask the bleeds with thick tape or similar on the inside? Here is the design for the fan/led controller I want to use for the EURISKO.
It will be integrated into a LCARS display in the standard that will support the model.
I will use a NZXT Sentry LXE with a remote touchscreen display like this one :
Sentry LXE (http://www.highflow.nl/fans/controllers/overige-fan-controllers/nzxt-sentry-lxe-external-touch-screen-fan-controller.html)
http://i52.tinypic.com/34eeptx.jpg
The Idea is to take a thick piece of dark plexi and fit the buttons with transparant clear plexi. Different colour leds will light the buttons randomly with certain ones lit continuous making the screen come alive.
The NZXT LXE touchscreen fancontroller will be integrated into the panel after stripping the casing of it. The blueish voyager button left corner will be fitted with a on/off switch for the pc.
Really looking forward to this job, it might just get precedence above other work!
The colours in the design might change depending on the colour leds I will receive, but the layout is almost final!

Here is a short update:
It is good to take a break from the build every once and again. Left the build for a good week to come back and find several issues with the design that I didn't see before. So I spend the most part of the day with the dremel taking of milimeter by milimeter certain elements of the tail to make the "flow" of the design better. There was a 3 mm thick layer of dust in the room when I finished but its done now and I am happy with it!
Last time when I hooked up the tubing to the warp nacelle it looked like this:

The white coil only just prevented the tube from folding too much so no coolant would be able to flow through. Obviously not a good solution. Take this restriction times 4 (2 per nacelles) and the single pump would definately not be enough umpff to make the ship fly any harder then warp 1,1. Back to the drawing board it is. What would make a perfect 180 degree turn and do that within 4 cm ?
Contacted Bitspower to ask for the heart to heart measurements of their snake fitting. Could not find the deatils anywhere.
Bitspower descided after seeing the buildlogs to send me a box with all different types of fittings, connectors, converters and what not to help me out. How extremely cool of them ! Looks like there are a lot of old trekkies around !

Looks a whole lot better al ready. No more restriction in the tubing which also doesnt want to press outwards by the strong curvature in the old solution.
This week will start the foam work encapsulating the nacelles and place the led array.
No small job .. (but so much fun!!!)

Here is another update :
The Deflector Tunnel!
So, What do we have to do here. Fit the MDF PSU casing into the tunnel, fit the HDD drive cage with 2 HDD's and a SSD, fit the Laing DDC pump and add a 92mm fan for the HDD cooling.
http://i53.tinypic.com/qsug.jpg
Here is an upside down picture for explanation. After a tip from The Boiler I incorporated a structural element that will make attaching the case to the standard far more easy.
The MDF PSU casing has been raised for a couple of cm's making it stick out under the case. This will make it fit into a slot in the to be build standard and when everything is neatly airbrushed the model will seem to float 1,5 cm's above the standard (well thats the idea at least, LOL)
http://i52.tinypic.com/22tsx.jpg
A little jump forwards, I was so busy I forgot to take pictures! I cut the raised casing out of the foam and sunk the HDD cage into it. Also added some structural elements to make it more stiff.
http://i52.tinypic.com/j7dvzn.jpg
The foam "behind" the HDD cage has been removed to allow a 92mm fan to be placed pushing the air out of the tail section. So cool air is coming in through the raised PSU casing and pushed out through the tail-fan

Looking better with every update dude! I wonder if you can provide me with a Trekkie insight into something seeing as it's a prominent part of your build. Why do the warp nacelles move in some ships before they go to warp? What's the story behind that meant to be as not all vessels even have that configuration do they... While you're at it, exactly what are the nacelles? I've seen the energy cores onboard in many episodes of varying series but I don't have the slightest clue how it's meant to be turned into propulsion!
I hope you do, consider it a challenge as I'm intrigued lol

If memory serves - it was something to do with the enhanced nature of the Warp drive fitted to the Intrepid class ships - they were the fastest ships in Starfleet by a substantial amount but I admit, I'm not the trekkie I used to be lol.
The only other ships I remember having moving nacelles were the Defiant Class but there may well be more...
More seriously though, it was probably because it looked cool!!! heh
slaveofconvention
03-26-2011, 01:23 PM
OR there's this... lol
Memory Alpha:
The variable-geometry pylon is a feature first introduced to Federation starships around 2370.
The warp nacelles have the ability to be raised into position for warp speeds, then lowered into a more streamlined position when at slower-than-light speeds. The Intrepid-class starships are equipped with this feature, an example of which is the USS Voyager. (VOY: "Caretaker")
The pylons were raised anytime a warp field was generated, even if the ship was not traveling at warp speeds. (VOY: "Learning Curve")
No other class of starship to date incorporates this design.
Did the defiant come into use in DS9 before or after Voyager started being shown - I could have sworn the nacelles on the Defiant moved....
EDIT: The pedant in me took control - just been you-tubing the defiant and it doesn't have moving nacelles - at least I don't think so....
On another note, the shape of the Defiant would probably make it a much easier casemod lol

Oh you didnt just ask me that ! Sweet ! Here goes:
The warp core is actually called the gravimetrical field displacement manifold and is used to create a bubble around the ship that would not react with normal space time hence bypassing the time-dilation issue with faster then (or close to) light travel. The Warp nacelles are the variable geometry warp coils or generators, so the official title for the warp nacelles is (and here goes) :
Variable geometry - gravimetrical field displacement - coil or generators.
To get a clear picture of what they do, take this analogy. ever seen those high divers at the olympics? triple backflips with double screws when they jump of a 10 meter high ledge? Gotta give them respect, I made a bad dive (2 meters) once and landed flat on the water. Man that hurt! Because the water is hard like concrete when I fell through because of the water tension. In the olympics you can see multiple little fountains splattering on the water just a couple of feet from where the divers actually hit the water. Why is that I always wondered until I found the answer. The breaking of the water surface tension by the water fountains made the smack the diver makes on the water MUCH less hard and actually could make the difference between life or death if the dive went bad.
So the Warp field does the same it actually softens up the space time continuum around it exposing subspace (like the fountains break the water tension for the diver and opens up the path to the deeper water) making the warp bubble with the vessel flow through space-time noticing almost no "friction". Untill you come upto warp 9.9999 with warp 10 being the end of the warp scale. (the borg had transwarp tech which makes a wormholes through subspace instead of using a lubricating warp bubble to flow through it)
I also have not found any other ship that uses the movable warp nacelle configuration. Maybe the prometheus class but i have not seen that in action, only on pictures. http://images.wikia.com/memoryalpha/en/images/5/5d/Prometheus_class,_aft.jpg
To be homest i could think of the warp bubble being better aligned with the ship at warp speed. The warp nacelles are actually located under the saucer at impulse and in the middle of the ship when raised. But I have to agree it probably was the designers trying to find a way to differentiate from all other starfleet vessels and ... IT JUST LOOKS JUMMY !
Hope this satisfies your curiosity and the challenge is met ?
Thansk for making me think and do research (I love doing research)

One final note : Miguel Alcubierre submitted a paper on real life warp drive !
http://accrodavion.be/Accrodavions/images/Warp%20Drive%20Alcubierre.png
It is shown how, within the framework of general relativity and without the introduction of wormholes, it is possible to modify a spacetime in a way that allows a spaceship to travel with an arbitrarily large speed. By a purely local expansion of spacetime behind the spaceship and an opposite contraction in front of it, motion faster than the speed of light as seen by observers outside the disturbed region is possible. The resulting distortion is reminiscent of the ``warp drive'' of science fiction. However, just as it happens with wormholes, exotic matter will be needed in order to generate a distortion of spacetime like the one discussed here.

I solved the problem with the huge "sunroof" bleeder and those on the sides.
I will use a reflective insulation tape (actually layed the plastic underfloor in my living room with this) It weighs nothing compared to the thick layer of filler, it seals all the bleeders, it reflects the warmth coming from the hardware inside the case preventing the foam to become an insolator and also reflects the light from the leds so the inside is better lit.
Creds to Munty for the exellent tip! Thansk bro!
Just wanted to share this pic before sealing all the bleeders.

ok, if that's the case, then why, in the final episode of the next gen, was the future enterprise able to run at warp 13 and then turn around and run back at "maximum warp"?
oh yeah, this build is turning more magnificent than i originally thought it would.

I Knew I had to put that in, but descided not to mention it.
There is also a TNG episode that features a very old picard that has to go to a specific place in the neutral zone in 3 different time periods. The timeperiod with the 80 something year old picard also had beverly crushers ship fly at warp 13.
In the VOY episode threshold the warp barrier is set at 10 , with 10 being infinite velocity. At infinite velocity you would be at every point in the universe at the same time. Paris and Janeway actually have children in this episode. Fantastic!

Ah this I CAN help with - pretty sure it was explained in one of the books altho I can't recall which one.
Basically as they tweaked more and more speed out of the engines, it got to the point where they were going at 9.99999 or 9.999999 (the latter being double the actual speed of the former) which was pretty much impossible to keep track of so the scale WAS recalculated on a 1-20 scale where 1 was the SOL and 20 was infinite speed.
one of the few inconsistencies between the series.
Cmon man - I LOVE trek - always have, but the inconsistencies between the series were legion lol - then again, it's fiction so that's absolutely ok with me :D

First, let me just say I love what you've done here. And I am in no way, shape, or form qualified to make suggestions. But the panel you are going to use for monitoring, has a typo. It has the ship class spelled Entrepid, when it should be Intrepid. I know it's a silly observation, but there are trek heads out there that will fry you if you leave the typo in there.

Good answer man! I'm enlightened :) The diving analagy is a good one, I will now forever think of Trekkie propulsion as more of a 'sucked into low pressure spacetime' thing than a 'pushed really fast through space'
BUT!!! I believe Voyager had moving nacelles too... They didn't go far but I'm sure they moved a little didn't they? Come on, I'm no trekkie but I'd still like a point in the quiz :D

Yes the Voyager vessel is next to the EURISKO (doesnt actually exist in the star trek realm, something I came up with) vessel the only one that have moving nacelles as far as I know. The EURISKO is actually based on the Voyager with Ablative armour (from the last episode where they kick some Borg butt) I should have been more clear, sorry!

The trick is to let the clay harden a bit before putting it on. That way when you apply some pressure it doesnt turn to mush when you're being a bit to forcefull. I am thinking when everything is finished and sanded and painted you wont be able to see the difference between the clay and the depron.

To bend a cornour is relatively easy. Done this with my wife's hairdryer, a heatgun or paintstripper, although the heatgun and stripper heated the depron to quickly which buckled.
http://i56.tinypic.com/sl05k9.jpg
But its not the only bend I need to make. Esspecially the nose is a complex collection of curves and bends. If you would to bend the depron like this it would be possible to cut out the wrinkles and make the pieces to fit but the front would be covered with straight lines and it should be a perfectly smooth curve!
http://i51.tinypic.com/2la66n6.jpg
I tried different techniques, from heatguns to hairdryers to little ovens, I even boiled the depron but i just wouldnt work or turn out the way I wanted it. The clay does all that without bruning myself.

Here is a good example why the depron work can sometimes take so long and you have to redo certain parts.
Nice and straight line right? I put a line in with paint for clarification.

Guess again !!!! Due to all the different curves I almost have to start to think in 3D!

Increasingly stunning with every post! How much does this weigh in at right now ASP? I'm not good with actual weights so try and compare it to something for me if you could lmao. Like how many times as heavy as a standard PC tower is it for example? If indeed it is, maybe it's a lot lighter than I imagine it to be ;)

Troy
pound lb t = 12 ounces, 240 pennyweight, 5760 grains or 0.373 kilogram
9.6 Kg = 25.7 pounds (US)

1 avoirdupois pound = 1.2 troy or apothecaries' pounds = 0.45 kilogram
1 kilogram = 2.205 avoirdupois pounds
You are right! I did a search and found only the apothecairies pound and used that value.
I stand corrected (and happy the weight is actually 4 lbs lower!)

Here is an update on the LCARS Fancontroller.
After spending several hours cutting out the final pieces from the panel it looks like this. Put the LXE next to it to give an idea of the layout.

http://i53.tinypic.com/2hwpixf.jpg
I ran this front through the CNC of a friend of mine but the result is not completely there yet. There are little pieces curled up in the corners that i just can remove. Tried a heatgun (almost ruined the whole front with it as the rapid heating caused the thin element to buckle), scalpels and a soldering device. Just isnt the cleanness I was hoping for.

Gonna try lasercutting the front now!

Got tired of the depron work and descided to go and do some hardware work.
This is my first serious build and I was able to get some execellent hardware.
http://i51.tinypic.com/2agrcsk.jpg
Lets start with the Gigabyte motherboard. Isnt she pretty with them golden accents and good eye-candy factor!
http://i54.tinypic.com/vq2qep.jpg
Unfortunately I am going to have to do some work on it. I want to completely Watercool the EURISKO and I will have to change out the stock motherboard cooling elements.
This one is going in the cabinet with special hardware at the office. Beautifull piece of technology!
http://i56.tinypic.com/11t6blj.jpg
And these I hve to fit onto the mobo. From left to right; EK Mosfet Waterblock, Koolance 370 CPU waterblock and finally the EK NF200/SB Waterblock
http://i54.tinypic.com/e7m2yw.jpg
Installing them took about an hour. Always a fine fiddly work work with them standoffs
http://i53.tinypic.com/wweybo.jpg
While installing the 2600K the first thing you notice is the split in the processor socket.
http://i51.tinypic.com/jhzsqt.jpg
I am not going to push the setup to its absolute limits (but I will give it a good run) So I opted for 8Gb Corsair 1600 CL7 RAM. Looks good and has ditto reviews, so we will see!
http://i54.tinypic.com/2cdg3f7.jpg
Also fitted all the Bitspower fittings. Which Fittings? Well these :

Here is another update.
Had a couple of bad weeks modding wize ...
All sorts of deliveries didnt show up when I had the time to work on them and once they came they send the wrong stuff. Very annoying and I am starting to worry about the coolermaster contest. especially now I have decided to rebuild the entire warp nacelle setup. but thats for later in this post. let start at the beginning ...
I spend several hours thrying to think my way out of the warp nacelle setup as I need to be able to get to the components inside to change out a tube or fix a leak.
So I made a plug to go over the front and back of the nacelle.
http://i54.tinypic.com/ogzb13.jpg
Had all sorts of idea's on how to be able to remove them and some people on the dutch forums were really creative with magnets and stuff. I decided on using velcro. Unfortunately I was only able to put really small strips of the stuff in the edges of the MDF. I ordered the heavy duty velcro and now when I remove the plug, I take the whole velcro with it. To much adhesive power is a bad thing here , LOL
http://i52.tinypic.com/2pu0cbr.jpg
Also the inside towards the nacelle needs to be nice so I made some ridges out of depron. I can't finalise the nacelles because I dont have the led/mircocontroller setup yet so I had to fix everything with tape ...
http://i53.tinypic.com/33dz5td.jpg
It all needs to be filled out with putty and sanded
http://i56.tinypic.com/2cfxwr5.jpg
You can start to see why I decided to redo the whole warp nacelles setup.
To fat, clunky, too high, relative size compared to main body, pointing inwards, just doesnt ring my perfectionist bell .
http://i56.tinypic.com/2my4wmf.jpg
The front and back have been fitted with a plug, but I also have to be able to get to the fittings in the pylon for placing tyraps or tube clamps.
http://i52.tinypic.com/jf8f1k.jpg
Solution was an MDF panel that is screwed in. Just have to make the detailling on the outside so i can reach them at all times. Challenges , challenges, challenges ...
http://i54.tinypic.com/2m3qwbr.jpg
Here is a picture of what I am planning to do. Get the res out of the casing and make a new hexagon side panel. This will reduce the courners making it more fluid and remove some fatness... (black is what it was, red what it will become.
Bottom picture is what I initially had in mind but a ellipsoid res is nowhere to be found.
http://i53.tinypic.com/29pu8o3.png
Visio version of the design
http://i54.tinypic.com/25hmhy9.jpg
The new nacelle compared to the old. The dif is huge !
and if its to small now compared to the main body, thats easily fixed with depron detailling
http://i56.tinypic.com/34fg0m9.jpg
Nice big surface area for the light to come out of the nacelle, even when it is in warp configuration.
http://i53.tinypic.com/2hnt14w.jpg
All the fittings are now within the MDF, this resolves a lot of tension the tubing was placcing on the XPS foam. It has got some extra room to fit the led lights now. Just have to think of another way to get to the fittings it once its finished. All good (time-consuming) Fun !!!

Great work mate, I've just read through the whole project and as a ST fan myself your doing it proud.
You probably don't ever want to work with fibreglass again :D but if you do this might help.
I used to work with fibreglass for a job making everything from canoes to water tanks I can't be sure from the photos but it looks like you used a cross woven glass matting for some of the work if that's correct it's why you had problems getting the mat to form into the corners and angles it's too thick and doesn't break down like glass mat made from chopped strands, woven should be sandwiched between layers of matting making a laminate woven mat on it's own can be subject to de-lamination or 'peeling' from surface, the woven matting is best used on relatively flat surfaces with simple corners and angles it's not really necessary for small unstressed jobs.
When laying up the first few layers on a complicated shape you need to use glass tissue matting which as it's name suggests is very thin like tissue paper and is very easy to work into tight corners and angles then use thicker matting (not woven) on top to reinforce as required,
Not sure what glass fibre resin you used but most resin goes a greenish colour as it cures and hardens and you can see the matting you've laid down go green, this is a good time before it hardens completely to trim a lot of the excess matting off the edges with a stanley knife it's called, duh, "green trimming" and can save a lot of time and is easier than trimming the remaining hardened glass later.
Keep up the good work, plus rep

Yeah I used woven matt 180 grams. Now I know that's just insain! No way are you going to get anything resembling a corner with it.
I was told epoxy and glass mats dont work together. I dont think there will be a next time soon, but you never know, so when it happens I will look into the mats.
Its been a good learning experience though!
Keep up the good work, plus rep

I have had to make compromises due to time stress. Will not be using different coulour leds in this version (ther will be a multicolour version somewhere in the future!!!) Also the on/off/reset buttons will not be implemented, but they will be present in the Lian-Li mediabay that will be fitted in the foot of the case.
Received the vinyl sticker from dennis from significs.nl. Works like a charm although I was fiddling around with it a bit as this was the first time i ever fitted a sticker like this.

Man that take up a lot of time. Spend roughly 8 hours designing and building the bottom saucer. Could have made my life easy by doing just simple surfaces with little to no design work to make sure I'll be ready for the voting of the CM Compo but that's not how a want to play this game!
With this closing piece I have spend at least 30 minutes alone, getting it just right by sanding to a fraction of a millimeter.
http://i54.tinypic.com/2m3pj7o.jpg
Found a temporary solution (well solution, the problem is a lot less visable) for the CCFL issue with the LCARS panel.
Why were the CCFL's so visable? Because the rest of the inside of the case does not reflect light! If it would do that the strong light from the CCFL's directly would become less. So I used the same ALU tape I used in the canope to make it more reflective.
http://i55.tinypic.com/s4nwht.jpg
Ahh success, only now the light is reflected so good that the ratio between panel and fancontroller is completely lost. I need to devise a way to be able to dim the CCFL's. Think I will use the fancontroller, just need to check if the wattage is ok for that!. So solved one problem , only to find the next.
http://i56.tinypic.com/xpdjm9.jpg
Also build the mediabay into the footing of the case. This will be integrated into the standard at a later date. Gonna finish it off with depron tomorrow!

Just to much left to do in to little time. Big thing were the servo's for THE nacelles. Had to order bigger ones because of THE force they needed to deliver but Now they make ŕ sound like someone turning their feet in gravel when THE nacelles are up. Could have made THE case look pretty and leave major features out but that's not THE way i want to play this game. And closing it up Now only to have to break it because of THE remaining work is definately not what i want to do. Making THE perfect ship for me is also winning!

I am in CM 2011 but I will not be able to deliver a finished product!
Its 95% complete but there are several major features not functioning like the servo's, the remote controlled lasers and ledsstrips and there is no paint job. The PC does work, did a dry run the other night, but the depron detailling of the exterior will take too much time because I spent to much time on debugging al the other stuff.
Yesterday I found myself almost putting a layer of foam desolving paint on the model because i had a wrong delivery and did not check it properly due to time stress, that was the cue for me to take a step back! Believe me I want to win and I will work to the max to get it as far as possible but I have to maintain a certain level of quality.

Just stay focussed Asphiax, I for one think it's going to be pretty tough to beat this even if it does get to the contest unfinished! You're right though, after all the hard work you've put in already it woud be criminal to compromise the quality now at such a late stage.
Could you leave finishing off the nacelles for after the contest and start putting down some colour now or aren't you finished depron'n and such yet? Would look good to see it lit and with some colouring, even if it's just the dish that's finished-ish and the back is clearly a WIP...
Good luck, don't rush!

I actually had an issue with the paint, they sent me the wrong one and i almost ruined the whole depron work with it (it had dissolvents in the paint) so I want to do it the other way around. The bottom saucer and will have some coulour and I am going to finish off one nacelles to give a better idea of how it will turn out. The connection to the main body will not be done as I need to rethink the servo array.
Building something this large (its over 5 feet) with no reference to materials or techniques does bring a large number of challenges.
funny though how stuff I never did before went ok and stuff that was easy went bad. Lets blame those Gremlins .. ehh Borg ... ehh Gremlins ....

I applaud you for that, "The devil is in the detail".
I don't need to tell you that what you are doing is technical, detailed often complicated work with some processes like the fibre glass having a steep learning curve, don't beat yourself up if things don't go right the first time or if you don't make CM 2011.
You will not be happy if you enter and have to keep telling people this bit is not quite finished yet, that's not quite working yet either, I've done it with motorcycle builds for custom shows and really wish I had not entered as you just have to keep explaining yourself and it's really not the reward you should get for all the work you have done, it's a real anti-climax and I was sick of friends telling me that "If only you did this, etc you would have won" Yeeeeaaahhhh, I KNOW!...for me it was a day I want to forget, If you can finish it to a standard you are really happy with then go for it but otherwise wait and really get it perfect so next time it will blow the opposition away, the WOW factor for this build is huge and it's going to be there even more so when it's perfect at another competition. :devcool:

Thats exactly the point. It almost negates all the work you´ve done so far!
If I want to loose myself in doing the detail work and spend hours on a single feature I will do that because I like to do it. Its not a real contest mentality but then again I did not start this build because of the contest (Although reaching the final 3 would seriously rock my boat!!!)
I do want to finish the big build somewhere soon, got another project that I am just itching to start. (also promissed my wife some major quality time with no computers - or spaceships, lol - around!
Thanks man!

Hi,
This is my final post for the 2011 casemod contest. I have worked my @ss off trying to get it finished before the deadline but I have not succeded.
The EURISKO is at 90% complete and I estimate it will take another 4 to 6 weeks before I can finish it in total. (Have to rewrite all the programming for the lasers and servo array as I have switched platform to ARDUINO based) Also work on the exterior with the intricate detailling in depron plastic done by hand takes more time then anticipated but I do not want to compromise the quality after spending at least 300 hours already on it.
Well here are the latest pictures and the final movie, hope you enjoy it as much as I have enjoyed building it !

I don't understand why the middle one has so many votes, the idea is a take-off of the old Hulk mod and while that looks great I don't really think this one does... Probably got more to do with the game it's based on than the quality of build :D Very surprising to see some of our other entries with no votes though, especially when a mod like that SC2 one has so many...

Ok, Here is the back from before - weekend update !
Some bad news :wallbash:
The servo array for the pylons is not going to be a part of this version of the EURISKO!
f*%cKI#G cr*p !!!
Yesterday I went or the last straw. I borrowed a friends pickup, loaded up the EURISKO and drove to a friend (very well versed in RC planes) to show him my troubles. After a couple of hours drawing, measuring and brainstorming we came to the conclusion that the initial design was the best and at the same time the only solution that would result in the pylons moving simultaniously and would fit within the very limited space available.
There is a space of 19x20x24 mm in which to place the servo's and create the fixation to transfer the force. It's just not enough.
The initial solution would work but the coolant in the tubing adds that much force that the small servo's wont cut it and I need bigger for which I dont have space. ARGHHHH !!!!
http://i56.tinypic.com/2ep6kuq.jpg
I have spent more than 50 hours working on this solution and its time I threw the tricorder in the ring.
(there is one solution left and that is to place a sping so the default action would be up and use bigger servo's that are connecte by a cable running through rings to the nacelles and that can be placed somewhere else in the ship. Sort of fly-by-wire type thing. This is not a big thing to install and can be done later)
Lets continue the Depron work

HEART BROKEN !!!!
The USS EURISKO has been forced down to the bonus prize category by fans of the Sors Salutis build who posted complaints on the Coolermaster facebook page.
After a week of getting congratulations from all over the world, adjusting signatures and receiving articles from the (inter)national press I am now COMPLETELY DEVISTATED !!!!
Over 350 hours I have already committed to this build and I thought I was being rewarded for my unique vision and patience of an angel with the depron work as its often described and for my relentless pursuit of quality instead of prizes (eventhough they certainly would help !!!)
I got better results by the combined votes and by the coolermaster jury themselves.
But now it seems coolermaster have gone back on their earlier officially published results ...
Take a look for yourselves at the winners page of the Compo (http://casemod2011.coolermaster.com/winners.php)
And here for the posts about the about the rule nr 6 ! (http://www.facebook.com/coolermaster)
And here for the posts about excluding me from the contest sors salutis (http://www.facebook.com/coolermaster#!/masbuskado/posts/10150211168250817)
I am not the sort of guy that cannot take it when someone else gets a prize nor am I someone who rats out other people just to make a point but I HAD TO REPLY to this.
Asphiax Casemod :
So I finally found what was up with the results on the coolermaster website. Thanks for letting me know in person guys, real professional! Is this the way to circumvent popular votes, by spamming a much more public facebook page? To be hone...st, the EURISKO has gotten a better endresult by getting more "unique and valid" votes and has received more points from the coolermaster jury exept the builds by boddaker and L3P. And again to be honest (boddaker you are my great inspiration you know that from way before the CM compo and L3P you just rock!!!) they both had to do work to finish it completely. The TRON Lightcycle was running of a seperate PSU but won, you dont hear anything about that. I am deeply , deeply disappointed that a few people can make such a big difference. It has truly broken my spirit that fellow moders cannot allow a clear cut win (by 5x amount of votes and COOLERMASTER jury results) to become part of the modding legacy. You should be very ashamed.
Thansk you all for the support but there will be no more updates on the USS EURISKO for the time being ...
Regards

What did the fans of the Sors Salutis build who posted complaints on the Coolermaster facebook page say to cause such a turnaround, I can't believe that AnG3L the builder of Sors Salutis would have had anything to do with it!
For Coolermaster to do such a thing is truly abysmal and goes against the spirit of the whole competition which is decided on votes, the competition is pointless if coolmaster ignore the votes and override the voting
Can someone please copy and paste what was said on facebook by the Sors Salutis fans as I am not on it and cannot access the link.

They removed the whole content 20 minutes after I posted this message on the dutch forums (must have taken some major traffic and comments)
I dont believe its something AnG3l has anything to do with.
Its his fans (or at least the ones that made such a fuss on getting fans to vote)
What they dont get is that we have had 7 contenders from the netherlands (7) that means we have a HUGE active scene and that generates a lot of votes.
Its also where a big market for coolermaster lies, they forgot about that in the rush to prevent bad publicity (like they had in the 2007 compo, the 2009 compo and now again)
sorry I am very upset right now ....

What the hhell man? How can they just change their minds? The initial voting should be final, there's no way they should be allowed to get away with backtracking like this. Can't we file an official complaint on your behalf or something? I'm sure if it was done by one of our mods or admin then they'd at least pay it some attention... This is a joke, I certainly won't be following the next competition like I was this one, they've really messed up...

06-09-2011, 09:47 AM
That is messed up, if it says that in the rules then they shouldn't have ever entertained your chances of winning. To let you into the competition and then take away the prize you've already won is a joke. It's not like just one guy was responsible for allowing the entry after all. How many people voted without bringing it up and why did the judges pass vote on it before deciding it wouldn't be allowed? Idiots man...
Way I see it though dude, it's all the more reason to finish it the way you want to and then blow them all away next year. We'll get you a facebook page and spam everyone we know with it! You got a damn high judge rating so we can easily put you in top place with some forum board abuse lol Let's see what reason these jealous losers find for why you can't be allowed to beat them then hey?

Good day Alll, this is your captain speaking.
After the dooming de-commissioning of the USS EURISKO we are back better as before !!!
Looking at the ships logs of the last couple of days I have decided to focus the ships resources on upgrading the ships defensive and offensive systems. To better protect against any and all attack.
Starting with the main deflector.
The Main Deflector, one of the USS EURISKO's primary means of getting out of trouble. It is capable of generating all sorts of particle beams like Tractor, Tachyon and AntiProton beams and it will deflect small asteroid and laser weapons. During the final test run has also proven effective against all possible BULL-SH!T thrown at it during the last week. To review the main deflectors test run please follow this link :

The Captain would like to express his gratitude for all the support, messages and protests about past events and is currently working with Coolermaster Netherlands and Taiwan for a quick and fair (to me and all other competitors) resolution.

No dont think so, the mod may only participate in 1 cm compo and there is also probably a startdate restriction like there was with this one.
I am planning on upgarding the phaser bank leds to full leds strips with a red laser at the end simulating the charge and dis-charge of the phasers. take a look at my earlier video to get a better idea. But the red lasers I have got are not so visible as the green one and I am a bit reluctant to get higher wattage one in fear of damaging peoples (and my own) eyes. We will see how that pans out.

that sucks you can only compete in one comp... still got to say... its cool that even for a non finished product you got some serious recognition... i mean this thing is awesome...
as for the lasers... you could always use some cheap lasers from a site like dealextreme.com ... cheap chinese lasers ... they sell a bunch of cheap ones... red green you name it
i think the idea you got for them is awesome... hahahahaha if it works you could always get a lazer that actaully sets a match on fire in place of the green one (just for one shot to make a cool video then place your normal green one back in its place) and make an enemy ship (small one) coated in scraped match heads and set it on fire hahahahahahahah ... childish... but humorous none the less

Personally I think you should have no problem competing in a second CM contest once it's finished. You're in official talks with them already right? So make that a condition of their compensation for the grief they're putting you through. That'll work out much cheaper for them than you demanding they still give you the prizes you were told you'd won (which is exactly what I'd be doing right now)
That's what I'd do anyway, just say to them 'I'm happy to waive the prizes I was awarded in exchange for an opportunity to showcase the mod in it's completed form at the next competition. I will have your full support and it will NOT be removed from the contest a second time for ANY reason. Failing this I expect the prizes I have already won to be delivered as promised. Regardless of the decision to revoke my title I and many others feel it was totally unfair and so I feel I at least deserve this much as compensation for the emotional rollercoaster you have started me off on.'

Hello everyone,
it took a while but Asphiax and us have come to a result. Since we cannot and don't want to disappoint the current top three nor Asphiax we have decided to award Asphiax with the Honorary Second Place. The USS EURISKO is a great mod which deserves all honor and respect so that is why we came to this conclusion. Next to this honorable mention, Asphiax will also receive these prizes to make a nice gaming rig:
1x Cosmos S
1x Silent pro Gold 1000w

Here is a short vid on the TriCorder Controller for the Main Deflector Laser and the different fire-ing patterns.
I will need to find a decent second hand tricorder on ebay or something and fit the small remote into it. There will be more functions (double digit functions, 11,22,33,44) to control the other led and led arrays in the ship. Also the volume control of this old HDMI switcher remote will be used to fade certain leds. Couple of nice challenges to be overcome, but its getting there!

Its going to take some more time unfortunately.
I need to finish all this work to be sure about the size of the breadboard I have to create for all the led work. this needs be fit somewhere in the deflector tunnel and once I have fixated the baseplate and deflector tunnel there`s almost no getting to the hardware anymore (except for swapping out HDD`s and the PSU)
I think the armour is another 10 to 15 hours of work.
Hope to get to it soon!

Ok , here is a mid-year update !
Ths build of the EURISKO started on january 16th and its now halfway through the year so time for a short update and planning for the next phase of the build.
Current state:
What a job but the noses and backsides of the nacelles are almost identical. Finally! Have got 6 days off from work (starting the 16th) to close the entire wing sections, right nacelle, install the mesh for the SDD/HDD tailfan and finish the deflector tunnel. I am going to need those 6 days ...
http://i53.tinypic.com/14xmcch.jpg
Its not going to be only build work but also unfortunately some restauration work. One of my cats descided to have a problem with that great big white thing in the corner of the room. Nails vs Depron, all best are open ....
Also for the next phase WWWicked of the Dutch forum Highflow has been hacking away at the beautifull banner made by JDBNSN! Hope you dont mind as I think it turned out quite ok. (picture is going te get swapped for finished picture)
http://i53.tinypic.com/10yiah2.png
Also I finally found a solution for the 500 dollar quote I received for the Dedication Plaque made of plexi.

The EURISKO got a bit lost in the Pegasus Galaxy ...
Here is a short vid on IZE's Atlantis (birthday gift for my baby girl, she just loved the leds and lasers on the EURISKO now she has her own)
Tubing has to be be stabilized with white plexi rings (looks like an Italian village right now) but the electronics work (there will be 64 RGB leds installed in sides) and she's good enough to light up her eyes when its in random mode...

Ok, Here is the update of day 4 of the MOD Marathon.
Instead of working on the exterior hull and deflector tunnel sections, I was working on something I felt was missing untill now.
The Impulse drives were just simple pieces of foam. This cannot be !
So started to work on some simple models to see what I wanted. This is the one I finally went for.
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/1.jpg?w=590&h=330
This is just to get a sense of size and general feel .. But its already looking better I think !
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/2.jpg?w=590&h=330
This is the final model. It looks a bit rough but I need to sand it down and fill in the cracks with the cellulose based filler.
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/3.jpg?w=590&h=330
Again looking better I think !
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/4.jpg?w=590&h=330
Here you can see the reason why I needed to build the models first. I needed to cut deeply into the wingsection to get the lighting installed. This is aluminium foil and 3 seperate layers of 5 mm frosted plexi to get a good glow.
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/5.jpg?w=590&h=330
Here you can see the layered approach to the impulse drive.
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/6.jpg?w=590&h=330
lighting test, the glow is ok considering this is lit by a led strip and not 2 single 8KMCD RGB leds (yes they will be constrolleable!)
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/8.jpg?w=590&h=330
Final result! Still has some light leaks but those are easily fixed .
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/9.jpg?w=590&h=330
Until tomorrow!

Day 5 into the MOD Marathon and I am starting to feel the strain.
Must have been working on the EURISKO for at least 39 hours the past days.
All good fun but I am getting Depron-itis and would love do something else then sticking foam to epoxy. So I did
Yesterday I worked on the right Impulse drive. Today I duplicated it to the left and created all the wiring and updated the circuit board to allow for the additional RGB leds. Will try to get a better picture tomorrow!
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/31.jpg?w=590&h=330
I finished the design of the lower saucer but cannot finalise it as the baseplate needs be fixated to the deflector tunnel to allow for certain curves to be finished with depron.
This is by the way the first attempt ( a very miserable one I agree) to paint the EURISKO for a contest a couple of months ago. It was abandoned for more reseasch as after 5 minutes I knew this was not going to fly …
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/21.jpg?w=590&h=1051
Just a small thing. Finished the front of the EURISKO. The lower “missing” parts will be airbrushed to allow for some additional depth.
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2011/09/11.jpg?w=590&h=330
Also did tons of other small but necessary stuff !
So with just a day left to finish all the depron work its going to be close.
Got around 8 hours left before I go on holiday for 2 weeks.
Untill tomorrow !

Go to the blog for the highres version with clear readible names (http://asphiax.wordpress.com/)
Ok here is me trying to be smart ! I thought of a little contest !
To make all the departments have the same numbers of starfleet personnel, I came one short.
Here’s what I did, I took a name of a very wellknown Star Trek person, figure, modelmaker or writer and hussled it up to make an anagram. That person is somewhere on this list. I wont tell you who it is or where the name is located but if you find him (oops …) You can win one of the last plaques. No matter where you are in the SOL Sector, send me the correct answer and my personal HAL9000 computer picks your name of the people that guessed righht, I’ll send it to your house !
So here’s the smart part:
To pass me the answer go onto facebook and look up the SCIFI OCD – Obsessive Creation Disorder (http://www.facebook.com/groups/SCIFI.OCD/) group, click join to become a member and send me the answer in a message ! The OCD is all about SCIFI Mods, Models and Projects and has some MAJOR talent in the group! We currently have more then 50(!) SCIFI Mods !
Is this me shamelessly using dirty tricks to get you to join the group ? >>> HELL YEAH !!
(but if you can guess the answer, you definately belong there, lol)
For peeps that dont have facebook (or FacePuke as I heard the other day) click sign me up on my blog (http://asphiax.wordpress.com/) and leave me a message.
The contest ends at the 14th of november 1200 CET !

Here is a quick picture of the airbrush work. This is not on the EURISKO. I am just learning airbrushing so this is a fellow forum dweller who has figured out the correct process for airbrushing the depron. First I got to cover the whole EURISKO with woodglue, sand it, putty in all the little damages and then airbrush.
Its still a lot of work !

Hi All,
The fact that the Cylon Resurrection NAS (http://asphiax.wordpress.com/2011/10/19/cylon-resurrection-nas-update-5/)has been delayed by the rediculous prices if HDD's and I have started another build - 2001 - A Case Modyssey (http://asphiax.wordpress.com/2011/11/15/2001-a-space-modyssey/), does not mean that the work on the EURISKO is halted.
I am currently venturing into the world of airbushing and here is the first update.
Because of the softness of the depron (I would definately go with Styrene next time) it needs a lot of fixing up before the final layers of paint can be shot with the airbrush pistol.
Seems are a real bitch as i cannot use normal putty as that has a chemical reaction with depron.
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/dsc06510.jpg?w=590&h=330
Also little bumps and dents are abundant as i have been building her for quite some time (again a lesson) I use woodglue to fill in the dents and then shoot another layer and fix her up again. Slow work!
http://asphiax.files.wordpress.com/2011/11/dsc06513.jpg?w=590&h=409
But al least we are getting somewhere!

Ok, so here's the bad news !!!!
As some of you might know i am relatively new to modding. I have been modding for exactly 13 months now and the EURISKO is my first mod. I have never done any airbrushing before. So i bought myself an airbrush and started practising , reading and so on. I used a special filling primer to get rid of the last little scratches and marks. It all started out so nice !!!
Getting the whole model taped up was a big job, took over 5,5 hours to get it perfect !
http://i43.tinypic.com/29msrj7.jpg
http://i40.tinypic.com/seolmo.jpg
The first layer went on perfectly !
http://i39.tinypic.com/ddtlu.jpg
So then it was time to pull off the tape and continue to the deflector tunnel and warp nacelles! So I thought !
EPIC FAIL !!!!
http://i41.tinypic.com/23urlo0.jpg
The new role of tape was to strong , my test piece waxs done with a role a couple of months old and it worked perfectly and now this !!! It tears the baselayer right off!
I think I died a little there ....
So with 8 hours left to complete the build (I wanted to have it completed before midnight newyears eve) I had to sand all the troubled pieces down (no small task with depron), put them into the primer again and repaint them. I was so hoping that I will not encounter any other hurdles.
SO on my brithday at 3 in the morning it looked like this
From starship to loveboat!
http://i44.tinypic.com/300y0dd.jpg
The resturation is going ahead relatively ok!
http://i41.tinypic.com/2nrmq1w.jpg
http://i44.tinypic.com/rwhxt1.jpg
http://i40.tinypic.com/311w1gn.jpg
You can see the damage from the sanding but maybe I can turn that into weathering like a whole bunch of Borg Torpedoes have hit.
But in the end I made it !!! With the setback of the 29th I worked almost through my birthday and all night but I made it ! She's finished!!!!
Here are my 2 mascottes , Captain Janeway (sorry kate) and the voyager sign!
More to come but first a Very BIG BEER !!!!
