Hey modders,
I'm sure it's a crazy thought, but... I've built several computers, and I also have built a fair amount of furniture (my two loves, electronics and woodworking). I've seen that most desks are now built with a cubbyhole for the computer. My thought was, would it work to build the computer INTO the desk? I'm thinking I could divide up the components and tuck them into parts of the desk so that it would be more or less invisible. The two problems I have come up with are 1. EMI from not having a metal case around the components, and 2. length (therefore voltage drop) on the cables. For reference, I am planning a roll-top desk with all the components tucked into the pigeon holes, so the longest cables should only be at most 40". Any thoughts on this would be hugely appreciated.

Hi there!

1. AFAIK, computers don't generate/recieve THAT much EMI.

2. I'm not sure you'll see that much of a drop. If you're that paranoid, you can extend the AC in the power supply, and have the DC stay the same length.

Sounds interesting. I'll definitely be interested in seeing this happen if you decide to go ahead with it. :D

As for your two concerns, I don't think either will be a problem. The EMI because, well, it's just not, and if it were, all my computers over the years that have operated in non-metal cases or...not in cases...would have had problems. :whistler: And the length, I rather doubt it will be a problem. I've seen cable runs in servers that approached if not exceeded that length, and never heard of them having issues. If you are concerned about the DC voltage drop, however, you could always replace the 20-22AGW PSU wire with something a bit heftier.

I will send pics as I build it, right now it is just a concept. And I don't even have any plans or sketches, as I generally create things from the ideas in my head, I'm much better at putting my ideas into creation rather than diagrams. I've never been much of an artist. Other than my first two concerns, are there any other huge problems I neglected?

Are you thinking of something like this? :) http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/showthread.php?p=298365#post298365
