It lost to the 6990? At least on the whole it looks like it has. With a couple exceptions the 6990 beats it.

Review from Tomshardware review (http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/geforce-gtx-590-dual-gf110-radeon-hd-6990,2898.html)
For the general card comparison it was pretty close. There were some other cards that actually out performed both of them like the 5970 and the 480
(Below; I just counted how many times each card out performed each other. If just the 6990 (830) outperformed the 590, but the 6990 (880) didn't, a point only went to the 830version. The 590 did get a point if it beat the 6990 (830) as that is the stock clock).
Wins over each other.
14- 6990 (830Mhz)
15- 6990 (880Mhz)
15- 590

I'd say it's something like a draw.
AMD seem to have just, and I mean just scraped the performance win overall, probably due mostly to having more VRAM, and with lower power consumption, but Nvidia win on features, temperatures, noise and performance when highly overclocked.
Either way, both are fairly hard to justify vs other SLI/CF setups.

There's no way a 6990 can beat a 590

Just want to add that the HD69xx series have no driver support at all.
AMD is releasing new card without any proper support.
Adding this to account nVidia wins by a huge gap imo.

There's also a new Nvidia driver release today which ramps up 590 performance quite substantially.
