good job so far. since i am in the middle of building an htpc, i am quite intrigued to hear more. i already had chosen my hardware, but i am still in the process of figuring out what software i want to use, so i will be looking forward to next week's article with antici..........pation.
Question: Did you account for spammers in the memberbase?

Every spammer we catch is permanently banned by IP and then their account is deleted.

I'm considering throwing XMBC on my media centre, but I need to read up a lil first lol
Good article. I think you went a bit overboard on the hardware requirements, but hey, that's what we do, neh? ;)
If you want Netflix on your Linux HTPC, one option that I ran across a while ago is PlayOn (http://www.playon.tv/playon). It looks like it's changed quite a bit since I last used it, but basically it takes content from a bunch of different sites and rebroadcasts them on your network as ...crap, I cannot for the life of me remember the term...anyways, as an open protocol stream that a bunch of devices can view and control. It shows up in XMBC as another 'channel' for each of the sources that it pulls form (listed on their website). When I used it last, it would only let you view the stuff in your Netflix queue, but you can set that from Linux anyways. ;)
Of course, there's no official Linux Blu-ray playback, so that's another consideration. But, just so people know they have options. :D

+1 to x88x's suggestion of PlayOn. The Mrs has been hounding me to get a box up and running with this software!

That's where I first heard of it.

Remember guys there are 3 more parts to this. Playon will be mentioned briefly but as it stands right now I will only be covering Windows 7 as the OS.

I will be building A HTPC in the near future so I will be following this closely, I was going to question why you weren't building your own case until I checked out the case you had chosen..damn that looks nice :whistler:

There are actually several HTPC case choices that I liked. 3 of them were way too expensive @ > $300 each, There were a few sub $100 that I liked and the Thermaltake Lanbox Lite was the winner.
My HTPC case is in the last place you'd expect it to be.
And it is exactly where it should be.
If that makes sense ;)
