I have started another mod but this time....it's for my wife.

Lately I've been hearing her grumble about having to use my 7 year old Dell desktop when I have all these cool computers sitting around. She has always been a huge fan of Wonder Woman so I thought that could be something I could use as a theme build for her.

I've done my planning on design and paint and so now it's time to get moving.

The first thing to do was find the perfect case.

I can picture things in my head before they are ever started so I know just what I'm looking for. And after 4 hours of scouring the web I found it!

It's the NZXT Lexa S.

It has the perfect shape for what I need. You'll see why later but here is a pic -

This build will require some air brushing skills that I don't have so I will be contracting that part out. I have contacted Steve Nunez (http://www.stevenunez.com/index2.html) for the work. He seemed really interested to work on this and liked my ideas. If you look at his work you might want to prop up your jaw so it doesn't hit the floor. There are no words great enough to explain his work.

I have been gathering up art work that will be used (sort of) for the side and front panels. Here are a couple shots that I might have him work from.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/Wonder-Woman-w18-1.jpg

I'll have to prep the case to make it ready. It came with a texture that needs to be smoothed out so it looks like I need to repaint it.

More to follow-

Was going to be talked about later but...

The crown will have the red star with an led behind it and it will also work as the power button. :)

I got a chance to shoot the primer tonight. It didn't lay down as flat as usual so I'm guessing it's a little older than I thought it was. Not a problem because it gets sanded anyway before the paint goes on.

I shot a fairly heavy coat on. It will let me sand it without cutting through.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_6685.jpg

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_6686.jpg

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_6687.jpg

Since this paint job alone is going to break the bank I will be looking for sponsors to help out on hardware. I'm torn because of course I want to use the coolest thing out there but on the other hand, all my wife plays is Peggle and Bejeweled.

I see they will be airing a new Wonder Woman. The timing of this build just got better! It's hard to replace LC though!:D

I worked a little more on the painting today.

I wet sanded the primer. You can see in the picture that the primer wasn't perfectly smooth. It's thick epoxy and it was a little old. You can see where its starting to cut through and flatten it out.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_6693.jpg

Once it's perfectly flat all the darker spots will be light gray like the rest of the area. One thing you try to avoid when wet-sanding is cutting into the bare metal like this -

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_6695.jpg

It's easy to spot repair with some primer and sand back down though.

After cleaning it really good and wiping it down with a tack cloth I sprayed the first heavy coat. It looks better already!

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_6698.jpg

After 3 full wet coats it was done. And it looks way better than the rough texture.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_6700.jpg

Then I noticed this little beauty -

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_6703.jpg

A nasty sag/run from getting a little too impatient between coats. It may look disastrous but once it dries I will show you how to fix things like this and it will look like it never happened. .... I hope.

Here is the side that will get the large mural. It has a little orange peel but once I wet sand it and buff it out it will look like a mirror.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_6704.jpg

It has to cure for a while first, so until then, thx for watching.

A little wet-sanding with something like 800 then 1200 followed by a light dustcoat over the affected area and you'll never know that run was there....

A little wet-sanding with something like 800 then 1200 followed by a light dustcoat over the affected area and you'll never know that run was there....

I'll be scraping it down once it cures, with a razor blade ( very very carefully) and then sand it flat. This paint is about the best you can get for needing to do repairs so I got lucky.

I'll let it cure so the sag is hard as a rock and then I'll work some magic (hopefully).

BS Mods

Paint update time -

So it cured long enough that I can get back to work on it.

The first thing I need to do is take care of that run. It requires a LOT of patience which is something I don't have and ironically is what made the run in the first place.

There is a special tool for removing runs like this ....a new razor blade.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_6712.jpg

I use it to scrape the bad part off. Very very carefully hold the blade straight up and down and drag it towards you taking off little shavings.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_6713.jpg

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_6717.jpg

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_6719.jpg

So keep doing this until you see and feel the bad spot disappear and it feels smooth. It will be ready for sanding at this point. Pretty easy huh?

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_6722.jpg

It works great until you tilt the blade a little off and then you leave a gouge like this --

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_6720.jpg

^^^^ THIS = VERY BAD  Except that I put a lot of paint on so I might be able to save it!

Time for some sanding. I started with 800 grit just on the spots I scraped down. Follow that with 1000, 1500, and finally 2000.

Not sure if the gouge is going to come out..only one way to find out....keep sanding...

I started on the other side panel and this shows what a few passes with 1000 grit will do.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_6725.jpg

It looks like I'm ruining the paint but this is what you have to go through for that showroom shine.

You will quickly see any tiny imperfections like a speck of dust or a bug that flew in. They sand out really easy so don't panic.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_6726.jpg

Here is a critical step when sanding and buffing. You need to protect edges. Put some tape along the edge about 1/8" in so that when you sand of buff you don't take too much off. Edges will cut through really easy.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_6730.jpg

Here is the side panel after a 1500 grit rub down.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_6732.jpg

And after a 2000 grit rub down. It looks like a foggy paint at this point.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_6734.jpg

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_6733.jpg

And after I hit it with a soft cloth and a little dab of rubbing compound you can see the finish it will have. I'll be using a small power buffer to make it a lot faster. And the end result will be a mirror finish.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_6737.jpg

Oh, remember that little gouge I had to sand out? Turns out it was a little deeper than I hoped so I sanded through to the primer. Notice the small grayish round spot?

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_6735.jpg

Ya, that one!! Now I get to repaint the panel. Oh well, stuff happens. :x

Remember the game where the deep voice says " FLAWLESS VICTORY"?

That's how I felt when I sprayed the panel this time. :P

I noticed my spray pattern seemed odd with my gun and discovered it has a speck of something in it. It may have led to my issues the first time around since I couldn't get the flow-out right. I just kept spraying instead of investigating. Again, I have no patience.

Look at this reflection. I may not need to touch it. Not even with a buffer.

I buffed out the paint today. It turned out great! Just the way I wanted it.

I bought new compound and new pads since this is black and it will show every flaw or scratch.

I started out with a pad made for cutting the paint and used rubbing compound. This is the compound I have always used and trusted.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_6787.jpg

After I cut the paint down with the buffer this is the reflection I got without getting to the polish yet. You can see my hand reflection.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_6788.jpg

Next up is the polish. It brings the shine out and gets rid of any swirls or light scratches. The pad is specially designed to eliminate swirl marks.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_6789.jpg

And here is the reflection you get when done. This is a picture of the case itself but it looks like I just took a picture of the driveway. See the indentation of the side panel on the right?

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_6791.jpg

How about now??

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_6792.jpg

Now that's what I call mirror black!! 8)

Remember the original texture??

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_6532.jpg

This is much, much better.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_6797.jpg

Now I have to do a little work to the plastic front panel to give it a good shine too. It's plastic so I may try to sand and polish it or just go right to painting it. You can see with the panel on the case it does not match. I'll get to it next.

I've been real busy lately and have been putting this paint on the back burner.

But I HAVE to get it to the artist.

I went out tonight and finished the front piece so it matches. I didn't take a lot of pics because I'm dead tired but you'll see it came out like the rest of the case, nice and glossy.

Painting plastic is not quite as easy as metal. But it's done.

Here is the before pic of the front piece and you can see it had a dull plastic look compared to the case -

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_6797-1.jpg

And now -

Here are a few random shots showing how it looks. Now I can get it shipped to New York. I am crossing my fingers the shipper takes it easy on the package. I can just see them kicking it out the door of their truck.

This was a single stage. Since it was a solid color it works fine. Anything else I would use Base and then Clear.

The case is now in the mail on it's way to http://www.stevenunez.com/index2.html

He is excited to work on this project and that makes me even more excited!

I have to get moving on finding the hardware I want to use. I haven't even put any thought into that yet. I will be looking for some sponsors so I need to hammer out the details on what I will be using.

I'm going air cooled and will be doing a lot of custom lighting as well. Other than that I guess I better start looking at what's out there and would fit with this build.

Time for the paint update.

Prepare to have your mind BLOWN!!!!!

I just received word from Steve that the paint is done. And he sent pictures of it.

Let me just say this while you are still thinking clearly - Steve was so awesome in helping me with this build. He helped me through my design and concept and added his own flair. He was very positive and understood just what I was after and didn't try to change my mind or anything. And I really appreciate that. If you or anyone you know needs to have some air brushing done, you must contact him. I really believe he might be the best in the entire world. See his work at http://www.stevenunez.com/index2.html

And now for the pics -

I am still shocked and cannot believe what I am seeing. Hope you like it too.

Here is what I gave him to use -

When I opened his email and saw these pics I was floored. I am almost afraid to touch it. But I gotta get hardware and it still needs a few mods.
I will be wearing white cotton gloves and I need a microfiber work table! 8)

I need to go lay down now. I might even go smoke a cigarette. And I DON'T smoke:smoker:

Drive bays? Do you mean the over spray from painting the side panel?

I'll just be painting those back to the black color. The side window is tinted a little dark. I will have some cool lighting inside and a couple tricks will be reviewed further in this build log when I get to that point.

The shine will depend on what paint you used, a good buffing wheel(s), the right compounds, and knowing when stop! You can burn the paint or cut through it if you're not careful. Just takes practice I guess.

Post up some pics so we can check it out.

I'll be painting the psu shell. It was ok but not good enough. I stripped it clean and applied some primer surfacer. If you don't know what primer surfacer is. it's a super thick high build primer that you can blast on there and it fills imperfections. It's my best friend.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7046.jpg

So after looking at the inside of the case I decided it should have a better paint job too. So I had the nerve to drill the rivets out and pull the top off that has been air brushed. That way I don't have any accidents.

Then I hit it with the same primer surfacer after scuffing it up. If you wonder why gray primer instead of black, it's because you can see imperfections easier after wet sanding. So here it is with 2 heavy coats and it looks like I'll be good.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7047.jpg

I will be making a custom fit shield out of some perforated aluminum that hides the drive cages. I just think drive cages look ugly. So I will cut a piece and form it to hide the front and curve around to the side. Here is the start of that -

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7049.jpg

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7051.jpg

I use some great flat shears to minimize distortion when cutting.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7052.jpg

Ahhh but you still get a little distortion here and there ..

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7053.jpg

But since it's soft aluminum I use a steel roller along the edges to flatten it back out...

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7054.jpg

And now the bumps are gone!

The more I looked at this front panel it just seemed like I needed to make some paint adjustments. I decided to return most of it to black so it will match the inside of the door when it's opened. So I masked it off really really really good and hit it with some primer.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7055.jpg

Now I need a little vote from you guys on whether I should leave this piece chrome, paint it white, paint it black, or paint it blue? The obvious choice to me would be blue. Except, I can't match the paint exactly so it would look odd. To me the chrome doesn't fit but what do you think?

I'd keep it chrome.

maybe add more chrome features to the inside of the chassis to tie it in with the outside lip like fan grilles or liquid cooling components or whatever it maybe. chrome sorta goes with the super hero theme in general. chromolying metal parts is pretty cheap these days, and they can plate plastic chrome as well.

honestly i never even noticed that chrome lip in the pictures in the first place.

you know i've got to say you know what the hell your doing with a container of paint.

oh and a electric sheer would cut that mesh like a bandit w/o those little bends and pinches.

Ok so I think I will leave it chrome. A little splash of chrome is always good right?

I'll add a few things to balance it out. I think I'll go with a chrome Zalman cpu cooler too.

I've been bouncing back and forth on all kinds of stuff on this thing.

Paint-

I painted the case all black and it looks good now.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG-20110619-00006.jpg

I painted the front nose pieces where they mate together.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG-20110619-00008.jpg

I primered the shield for the drive bays. I'll be making some cut outs and stuff but this will get me started. I used this etching primer. Spendy but worth it!

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG-20110620-00010.jpg

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7063.jpg

Fans-

I ordered fans with LED's but I need to make some changes to them. For the top of the case it uses 2 140 mm fans so I want them to glow red/white/blue to keep with the color scheme. So I ordered one fan with red LED's and the other with blue LED's then when I put them together I just have to swap out the middle ones for white.

I am also going to paint the fan frames black so I needed to pull them apart.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7057.jpg

And after a little soldering...

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7066.jpg

Red - White - and Blue

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7068.jpg

The next update will hopefully be putting the case back together if the paint is set well enough.

they say they come with a "circuit controller"

Now i'm not sure if they are talking about the internal circuit like the RGB LEDS i have now. or some external controller.

I noticed some are Three lead LEDS and others are two LED circuits.

definantly cool though. I bought some RGB/UV/RBP LEDS for my Vento 3600 from frozencpu.com and was more then satisfied.

Big FYI though about the color changing LEDS. You'll need to use a capacitor to get them to work with a HDD activity light. Some odd reason the RGB three color ones won't light up at all. and the two color LEDS i have will only flash a single color. But a small capacitor inline with it makes it work flawlessly.

Thats a vid of my computer, skip to about 40 to see my lighting. (didn't want to post pics, since its your work log and all) The hard drive lighting is the coolest though as i've never seen anyone outside of me and my friends use multi color activity lights. Majorbud did it one step up from me and has triple LED activity lights that turn on one by one then all simultaneously change colors. you can kind of see the lights in one of his videos http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PcVub-ow418

if your interested in specifically how we did it, i can PM you pics and draw out a mspaintCAD diagram its pretty dang easy for a pretty cool after effect.

Parts are starting to pile up on this thing so I need to keep moving. I have temporarily ran into a mental block on what I want to do with wiring. Not sure if I'll change out the actual wires to solid colors, or, sleeve them all. If I sleeve them do I want all the same color, or do a combo of red/white/blue. Mental Block!

And I am working on the inside paint scheme and am seriously driving myself insane! My wife wants me to keep the inside all gloss black, but I feel I need to carry the theme to inside the case. So I am doing a little of both.

I have painted the cover I made for the drive bays with a red/white/blue and will be putting random star decals on here and there and then spray it black. Then I peel off the decals and have the colored stars underneath. It will be similar to what the outside looks like.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7076.jpg

I mounted the mobo to get an idea of locations of wires and stuff. I picked up this Biostar because it had the colors I need basically. It's a Z68 board too!

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7070.jpg

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7074.jpg

I have painted the power supply gold and put a Wonder Woman decal on the top. Not sure if I like it or not. My wife thinks it's great so it may stay this way.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7075.jpg

I mounted all the drives and stuff in the front to see what it will look like and so I can decide on locations. I bought a fan controller that has knobs sticking out so it has to go on top because luckily the front door has a perfect place for them to fit inside once the door is closed.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7071.jpg

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7073.jpg

Now you can see why I painted the front piece black again. It goes better with the overall appearance of the drives.

I still need to get a little card reader but that's it for the front.

I'll have more parts on the way as soon as payday Lotto rolls around for me. :P

I got the last of the paint work done. I think. :?

I finished painting the drive bay cover and I think it came out pretty nice. I was worried about it being a little too busy, but it actually helps pull everything together I believe.

First it was time for a little "arts and crafts". I printed some stars on a decal sheet and cut them out.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7082.jpg

Before I stick them on I "dusted" the part with a little gold paint. This is so I would get some of the gold flaking on the paint and give it a little extra pop once the lighting hits it inside the case.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7083.jpg

You can kinda see a little gold flake - you don't want it to hide the colors.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7086.jpg

Then I stuck on the stars in a random pattern -

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7087.jpg

Shot it with the black about 4 times -

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7088.jpg

Let it dry and peel off the decals....BAM! Colorful stars!

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7090.jpg

Here's a close up of the stars with some gold flake. -

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7095.jpg

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7091.jpg

With the panel installed you can see it ties everything together pretty good. You'll notice the stars are done different than the stars on the outside. I wanted these to have the colors instead of a shadow effect. I bet most people won't even realize it.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7099.jpg

And with the side panel on you can see it's not too busy at all. It all just flows together like a big bunch of happy colorful Wonder Woman-ness.

:P

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7103.jpg

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7104.jpg

Once I install the lighting that I'm getting .....look out...it's gonna make the gold flake pop out (I hope)

I still need to replace the fan in the window. It's on order and will need a little modding too. I almost wish there wasn't a fan there now. I could make a new window? This one is nice though since it's beveled edge and is tinted.

I have made a decision on sleeving for the cables. I have an account with Techflex and I was talking to a girl on the order desk about what I was doing and she informed me they have something that isn't shown on the market yet!!! So I ordered a bunch of it and let's just say it will tie everything together Wonder Woman style <<< huge hint right there

So now I just wait for the remainder of parts to pile in. I can't wait to start sleeving cables especially... << sarcasm

This is an Antec tri cool with 3 led's so it will have the red/white/blue combo when I'm done. And it's clear so it doesn't hide everything as much, especially while it's running.

I will be keeping it air cooled since this is for my wife and she won't be doing any overclocking. I really don't need the fan at all that's in that window.

I know this will sound crazy too, but, I may not run a GPU at all since I'm using a Sandy Bridge proc and they have their own graphics capabilities built into the chip. This will also keep it a clean looking build. The gpu's look ugly anyway if you think about it. They put the fancy shell around them but it ends up on the bottom where you can't see it and so your looking at a bunch of soldering.

She only plays Plants vs. Zombies, Peggle, etc. so I don't think it will need too much power.:D

Or, I could get a vid card that I like and say it's for her but sneak into mine??

:D I have to ask, did painting the motherboard shorten the motherboards life span or make temperatures worse, anything negative come from painting it all? something I thought of doing ages ago but never went for it, same with heatsinks :D. I've seen some good VHT paints so I guess that's whats needed to do this.

This case was built for a customer over a year ago. It's still running just fine today and he games on it regularly. There was quite a bit of research done before I just started blasting parts with paint. It's a lot to get into but basically you need to spray the electronics with conformal coating then you can topcoat them with paint. I have a build log I will pm you.

Cheers mate, I'm not currently thinking of painting a motherboard but would be great to know the measures needed to do it right.

It does look weird seeing a full motherboard covered like that but awesome, & could mask areas to add a bit of variation, sometimes get ugly motherboards that could benefit from a different colour but not as much as some used to be :D, so yeah swing me a PM mate, appreciated :).

Sort of a small update -

I received a package today that had a couple goodies in it from Performance PC's.

I ordered up a set of new feet. These are gold of course. They seem to be the only ones that had gold. I prefer MNPCTECH feet but like I said I needed gold. And I ordered a pin removal tool for my psu wires. I am scared to use it since they are so fragile.

I picked up a piece of acrylic out of the scrap pile at my my local plastic shop. Only $ 6.00 woot!!
And it matches the original side window tint. It was 2404 bronze.

I decided I would try to put a recess all the way around the acrylic so when I drop it in the hole it will be sticking out barely rather that sitting back or being perfectly flush. The original window was beveled and stuck out a little. It looked good but it had that fan in the way.
In doing this it makes a heck of a lot of extra work but I think it will be one of those little details that adds to the build. As if this build doesn't already have enough to look at

So of course the first thing was to cut it to the irregular shape and leave extra around the edges for mounting and doing the recess. I cut it to size and was going to use my router table to mill off half the thickness of the material around the edges but right when I fired up the router it squealed loud, then started chattering, and then started smoking!! Plan "B" - much harder and a lot more dangerous. Use the table saw and chop saw.

I cut a line with the chop saw around the edges that would be my stopping point once I threw it on the table saw.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7117.jpg

Then I moved it to the table saw and cut off the excess just up to my previous cut. This made me very nervous.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7120.jpg

What I ended up with was a step all the way around

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7122.jpg

So I filed it and sanded it smooth

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7124.jpg

And polished it up with some rubbing compound

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7125.jpg

I dremeled the notches for the hold down tabs and it fits!!

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7126.jpg

I'm leaving the paper on for now so I keep the scratches to a minimum. Once I start playing with lighting I will have to peel it off.

In the meantime I will also shoot a coat of black on the DVD drives and finish detailing the PSU.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7128.jpg

Just before I headed off to work my doorbell rang and it was Santa, err uh, U.P.S.

I got a few goodies today -

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7127.jpg

It's the lighting from Danger Den. The i5-2500k proc, the Thermaltake cooler, and some SATA 3.0 cables from the Egg.

The first thing I wanted to do was switch out the red led's in the cooler for some gold ones. I tore into the cooler only to discover the led's are integrated into the control board of the fan. There is no way to replace them. At least they are red and not a oddball color like green.

One thing that immediately jumped out at me was the wiring coming out the top of the cooler fan.
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7132.jpg

I don't like looking at wires so guess what.....time for some modding.
I tore out the fan so I could focus on the cooling part and figure out where to hide the wires.
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7133.jpg

Then I realized there is a hole directly in top of the wires and it runs straight back down through all the fins.
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7138.jpg

Just gotta make the hole a little bigger- This scares me a little because one wrong move and I'm buying another cooler.
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7139.jpg

Also the wires need sleeved to hide them better.
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7140.jpg

So the hole is drilled, wires are sleeved, and ready for assembly. Fits perfect!
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7141.jpg

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7142.jpg

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7143.jpg

I kind of think this is how they should make them anyway. Who wants the wires sticking out the front?

And a pic of it installed -
http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7145.jpg

I tried the side panel and the window "barely" clears the front of this thing.

I also painted the dvd drives but I'll spare you that boring detail. I started on the PSU again. I didn't really like the gold paint. I'll be going back to the black but might add a few stars.

I am so glad I started this thing sort of early. I have had to mod or paint damn near everything.

Hopefully my spool of Super Leet Wonder Womanish sleeving will be here before the weekend so I can start on that. It will bring everything together and if you ever saw Wonder Woman you'll understand what significance it has.

Thank you both.

I'm working on the power supply right now trying to get the paint to look good. I tried just black, then I tried just gold, then I tried gold and colored stars, then I tried gold stars that were smooth and a crinkle gold on the rest. And, now it's back down to bare metal:think: I just can't decide what I like best.

I painted it all gold then I stuck some star decals on so I can overlay the gold with the red/white/blue.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7149.jpg

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7152.jpg

It looks cool if it was for a craft project or something but not for a nice case like this. It's just too much I think. Maybe too many stars or the placement of them...I don't know.

So since I figure it was destined for a complete redo I tried one last thing just out of curiosity. I sprayed the gold lacquer over the black enamel I just used. It crinkles up and leaves a cool effect but then I really hated it!

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7153.jpg

So now I start over.

I think I just about have the PSU done.

I went with the colored stars and black so that it will flow better with the rest of the color scheme. I still need to let the paint dry and then wet sand it to make it smooth and then lightly buff it. I also added a little bit of gold flake to make the stars glow a little.

Here's a few pics right after paint -

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG-20110704-00055.jpg

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG-20110704-00060.jpg

In this pic the stars look bright white but the actually do have color. The gold flake makes them glow a little in bright light. I'll have a lot of lighting effects inside the case so it should look pretty cool.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG-20110704-00058.jpg

Not sure what the little white specs are in the last pic but they aren't actually there?? Camera weirdness? You can also see the texture of the paint kinda sux. The spray can decided it was going to stick on somehow when I pressed down on the nozzle so I couldn't control the spray lol. Brand new can too! Argh.

My sleeving will be here tomorrow and I can get started on that! Then I can get the psu mounted for the last time. I hope.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG-20110705-00064.jpg

I got a package today that I desperately needed. It was my super special sleeving!

I think most people know that Wonder Woman had a rope that she would lasso the bad guy and then make them tell the truth right? And it was a gold rope right?

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/ww0820.jpg

Well . . . . .

Didn't it look a lot like this ....

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7252.jpg

If that's not the most Wonder Womanish stuff you've ever seen then I don't know what is.

It's a new kind that Techflex just started making and it's not even advertised quite yet. Well it might be now, but it wasn't when I ordered it.
:)

I started on it right away and realized really quick just how much I hate messing with the stuff. But I got it done.

The smallest they make is 1/4" though so I had to sleeve 2 wires together for it to work right. And then I went a little longer on the heat shrink just to make sure it holds good.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG-20110705-00066.jpg

I routed it through the back of the case and quickly discovered it's a lot shorter than I thought. It barely makes it on the 24 pin and then I discovered I have nowhere for the 8 pin to pop out over the top of the mobo because one of the fans is resting right up against it.

So I pulled the cables back out to see what it could look like if I kept them out in the open and drape them inside the case.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG-20110705-00070.jpg

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7255.jpg

I will still have more cables coming from the psu for the Hdd's and optical drives. And then the front panel wiring, USB, fan controller, etc. So I'll have no choice but to show some cables.

I will have to extend the 8 pin cable no matter what just so it can be routed better.

I'm worn out for today. See ya next time. 8)

You told us that would be the perfect sleeving for this case and I have to agree. I normally don't like seeing cables but with that sleeving it would be a shame to hide them! I'm also in favour of an alternative to zip ties as you don't want to take away from the rope look.

Yea I'm going to make a hanger out of aluminum that looks like the clasp on her outfit. (sorta)

Well I just spent several hours sleeving cables and extending the 8 pin mobo cables so that they are 6 feet long now. They will coil up and be hung up over to the side. I'll be making the hanger next.

I hear a lot of people say that the pin removers are fragile and snap off right away. I know they are frustrating when they just don't seem to want to slide into the proper place so I thought I would share a solution.

The problem is that the ends of the fins are cut square. So I use a really small file like this -

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7256.jpg

and file a little bit of the inside of the fins to give them a taper almost to a point -

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7258.jpg

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7259.jpg

And now with very little effort they slide right in -

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7263.jpg

I use a Lamptron kit and also a tool I got from Performance PC's -

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7264.jpg

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7267.jpg

They both have been filed and they both work great.

So anyway back to the sleeving. Here is my messy table after tonight. Time for a serious cleanup! But you can see lots of gold sleeving and the really long extended wires. I had to order another spool of gold and it will be here Wednesday. Then I can be done with that stuff.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7268.jpg

All my hardware is here so I may do a bench test to make sure it fires up instead of waiting until the last minute.

I went ahead and bench tested all the hardware and then loaded the OS, did all the updates, loaded games etc. so that it would be done and ready to go after final assembly.

I was very pleased when it booted right up and ran great, no errors, no smoke, etc. :P

Looks like hell but hey, it's a work table.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG-20110709-00079.jpg

Then I turned my attention to the hanger for the wiring. I wanted a gold hanger that looks like her belt clip. So I dug through my stash and found some flat bar -

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7270.jpg

Looks like it will work. So after a little quick bending around a pipe for the right radius and some sanding-

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7273.jpg

Then a coat of gold to finish it off -

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7276.jpg

I mounted it on the drive bay shield so that it should be clear of everything and the wires will loop around it and end up the perfect length -

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7277.jpg

I'll need to install this almost last so I'm off to do more modding.

I added a mirror to the bottom of the case - Not sure why - I guess I just can't stop -

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG_7280.jpg

Then it was bugging me that I could see the green edge of the ram so it needed an adjustment. A quick and real easy mod.

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG-20110711-00099.jpg

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG-20110711-00101.jpg

Ahhh much better...no more green -

http://i73.photobucket.com/albums/i205/BOBDBONE/Wonder%20Woman/IMG-20110711-00104.jpg

I went ahead and did the final install on the drives/controllers and hooked up the fans and temp sensors. Everything is well hidden and this case is great to work with for places to run wiring.

There's not as many cables as it looks. I have a mirrored floor so it looks like there's millions of cables in the pic. I will be straightening the wires a little but I'm still making sure everything is where I want it before I lock it all down.

All my fans and led's are working great. I had switched a lot of led's around. Now I have red/white/blue continuity.

I mounted the Danger Den led strips to the inside of the door facing inward so they will be the most effective.

I am doing all the little touch ups now. I had to modify a fan for clearance and cut through a wire of course! If Murphy's law kicks in at any time during this build I will find this "Murphy" character and beat him senseless! I'm not havin it.

I will take some good shots of it all together by tomorrow night. :)

^^^^One person above read the log, and one person above just looked at pictures.... LOL

I wanted the rope (wire) to look like it was coiled around the hanger I put on the side of the drive bay cover. Wonder Woman had her lasso coiled up and held by a clip on her hip. So this was my way of getting the wires sleeved with something that fits the theme and also making the wires the correct length in order for it to work.

Wow, what an amazing end result! Between the paint and the really thought out details, this is a stunning mod!

P.S. the garbled rep message was me, my sausage fingers hit enter instead of shift.

Very nice! The attention to detail is top notch and flows through the whole mod.

Thanks everyone!

It is sad but this mod has come to an end. It is all done and now my wife is a happy new owner.

I hope she pays me well for this...:crossed:

I entered it into a case mod competition and got 2nd place. I really hoped for first but they were all really great mods.

So here are the final pics I took. I just shot a lot of random pics from different angles and with different lighting. I keep trying to get my wife to pose with the case for a picture but she's not having any part of that idea.

So here you go -

Well maybe if you quit insisting she wear the costume. ;)

although wonder woman would not have been my first choice of a subject to base a case mod on, this is absolutely outstanding!!!!! very well executed mod. all the detail work is superb.

Nicely done. Any chance you'll be bringing this case to the PAX BYOC casemod contest?

It wasn't my first choice either but this was for my wife so I put my wants aside. Thanks for the compliment.

I didn't get signed up for PAX in time so I'm out on that unfortunately. I really wanted to go too. I may have a chance to go with something for Zotac. I am working with them right now on a possible show piece for their booth. I may talk to someone (a friend) that's going for BYOC and let them take it to just show it off a little.

Actually that's an awesome idea. I was trying to convince a couple of other casemodders to send their cases into the contest via proxy. The more cases and more competition the better the contest! CPU Magazine is hosting the contest again this year. I'm not too sure what the prizes are going to be but in the previous years it included being featured on the cover of the magazine and many different components. One year there was a $1000 processor and $500 water cooling set as part of the package.

Which one you thinking about sending?

The one for Zotac would be a custom build for them that would sit at their table. If I send one with a friend I'm not sure which one. I think the Wonder Woman would be great but also my Wood Stove mod got a lot of attention too. HHhhmmm not sure.

Either one would be awesome. Tell your buddy to look for Team Rock Lobster in the BYOC and say hi. Chances are I'll end up hunting down your case anyhow. Any chance you can put in a word for me with the Zotac people? I'll definitely be swinging by their booth to see your case.

I will be hanging around the Zotac area a little but will be off checking the place out a lot too so not sure if you'll catch me. Can't really say yet what I'm doing for the Zotac build but I may do a last minute work log right before the show. I will say this - Do you like popcorn? hint hint

These RGB lights came from Danger Den. They are cheap enough and really are the best lighting system I've found. You can use the remote to pick any color and make them flash or fade. It even has sleep mode where they are just dimmed down.
