View Full Version : Ultimachine
So, I got chattin' with a few other forum members and we were thinking:
If money were no problem, what would be the dream machine?
So far:
Quad socket motherboard.
1 PB HDD space+10TB SSD space
4*20 core procys
.25TB RAM
6*4*250MM Rads
2cm acrylic
(will edit thread as new pieces come in

250mm rads? would be very poor air flow, assuming your using that size of fans.
i would opt for 9 nova 1080's or rather 27 black ice GTX triple 120mm rads with 162 delta's in it's own room with 5 tons of phase change goodness.

Tilera's CPUs aren't multipurpose, but are single process type focused CPUs for systems that benefit from massively parallel approaches but are not suited to GPU computing. Also, they work in tandem with other CPUs.

Is that DDR4 ram @ 4Gbps? (http://www.pcworld.com/article/215476/samsung_develops_worlds_first_ddr4_ram.html)
Is that 1PB of storage a RAID6 array consisting of 334 3TB drives? That should have burst read speeds of 50GB/s and write at around 23GB/s. I'd love to see the custom controller behind that! It would require a handful of dedicated pci x16 slots or a couple ddr3 slots to not be bottlenecked.
Also, this thing is going to put out heat beyond the capabilities of water-cooling unless it's in a wind-tunnel or a constant source of ground-water is pumped through the blocks and the heated water is discarded... I would recommend a refrigerated, circulated oil bath around 0*F/-18*C. The lower temperature and higher density (> 1.71g/ml vs water 1g/ml) should carry away more heat than the 50*F groundwater. 5 tons is a lot of cooling, but this is a lot of computer...soooo...
Don't worry, I know where to place it.
If there's two things you know about Idaho, it's that they are cold in the north (literally 15 feet of snow in the winter), and wind is constantly moving.

It's all too easy to pick all of the most expensive parts and keep throwing more and more of them in and call it an ultimate machine. The real challenge comes when you put A limit on it for the reasons of practicality - how about "Must fit in a standard commercially available case" - that's not AS limiting as you might first think as the Lian Li 343b, Silverstone TJ-11 and several Mountain Mods cases are seriously large....

Pfffff...practicality!... what?
What do you think the 20mm acrylic is for?
It's a scratch built case!
