For long-term Installation (about 1-2 years), is it better to use thermal paste, such as Arctic Silver 5, or a thermal pad?

I read that the paste seeps out from under the Heatsink leaving nothing in between the cpu and HS. Is this true?

Your paste shouldn't leak, but i'd recommend the paste above the pads. The pads are useful if you're not used to this: they let you get a nice amount of stuff on, evenly, etc. but at the end of the day, the pads are for people who aren't comfortable with paste. The paste is better overall.

just to beat the dead horse.

Pads are for the industrial appoch easy to apply easy to use, but not as efficent. Paste is a little harder to use and messier but way more efficent for the long run.

If your really worried about seapage artic silver sells a thermaly conductive epoxy too (two part stuff you mix up) but once it's cured it's perminent....that means when you cahnge the CPU or heat sink you have to replace the other.....But it will not seap out over time

If you mix a little normal artic silver in with the epoxy, you CAN remove it at a later date.

Cooled a GF2 VGA card for a couple of years with an epoxied Celeron CPU fan (that was one of my first mods... )

Came off with a little elbow grease. :)
