It's funny telling them that it's actually faster than theirs

lookin' go-ood! (ala 'chico and the man.')

funny to think that these things were top shelf consumer tech not too long ago. and those texas instrument computers sure did suck, but at least they were expensive.... i remember as a kid my friend and i playing 'zork' on his dad's apple II ~ i wonder if he's still got that? or if it's more appropriate to put it in a museum, lol.

Here's a 1-Up:

Rage in the Machine and my Commodore are now at Micro Center! It's funny how many people stopped to get their picture taken with it too.:hehe:

so, do you have those on display to sell, or just show off what you can do in hopes of getting someone to commission some work for you? awesome job, btw.

Just to display. It also helps show people what more can be done to a computer than just the boring boxes everyone else has. Many of the inyards are components I bought in the store too. I think it gets a lot of people to trust your professional opinion and more willing to spend more money too.

Not like the old days at Office Depot, eh? Hats off my friend, spread the word and preach all that is MOD!!! Now if we could only change that logo on the big screen from Commodore to the TBCS logo!

:D

i take it that that store doesn't sell computers as much as specialize in components? i mean, i can't say best buy would *ever* allow a mod to compete with their off-the-shelf wares. besides, it might give their geek squad psychological issues. :) ...on top of their ability issues.... (maybe it's just me, but i think the geek squad sucks overall. they're overpriced and, from what i hear, half the time can't fix the problem right the first time. feel free to share your opinion on them and correct me if i've heard wrong.)

i ask if you were selling it because i'm curious (been using that word a lot here) to know if modders sometimes turn around and sell their art/services. i've seen the dell laptop commercials where, finally, a large company has realized that people actually are interested in style, even if it is just the ability to swap out mainstream cover art. therein lies an interesting business opportunity, eh? :)

I have Geek Squad comments but I won't hijack the thread lol.

We sell desktops from HP, Dell, Alienware, Gateway, Emachines and several others including our own brand. We sell laptops too. The components are in the back of the store where anyone can do a complete build with everything from the processor and up. We have about 80 motherboards and over a hundred video cards and so much more including an entire aisle dedicated to water cooling

oh, so you work there? pretty convenient for ya, huh? lol.

what i was getting at with the best buy thing was they're a big corporate entity that doesn't cotton too much to things like creativity not approved by someone who's job it is to approve creativity. they have a floor lay-out designed for them, and i'd guess product is pretty much the same from store to store based on marketing and availability. that doesn't leave much room for mods, eh?

where you work strikes me as more laid back in terms of letting the manager have certain discretionary products to display. that's how it should be ~ local product even in the big chain stores should, if possible, have their chance in the marketplace. too often, actually most often, a big chain doesn't allow their local management to make a decision on what to carry on their shelves. that, to me, is a bad upper management philosophy, the 'we know best' idea that ruins companies in the long haul. if you can't trust your local managers to get what they think will sell, get new managers ~ almost anyone can be a supervisor. imo, of course. :)

Unlike others, Micro Center is still a family owned business. It's not publicly traded and has no shareholders to answer to.

This is probably the biggest reason I shop there. That and they actually try to help and have educated people working the departments. By educated I mean someone familiar with computers actually works the computer department and mostly know what they are talking about.

The Micro Center by me is very close to Fry's. Even if the price is cheaper at Fry's I will still buy from Micro Center. The only thing still buy at Fry's are video games. The price is usually not touchable by MC...

We are actually tested. I went through 3 interviews and 3 tests on my computer knowledge. Every month we have required training to keep on top of the latest in technology. My department (Build Your Own) is the most knowledgeable in the store. We have to know the ins and outs of everything in computers and a little bit about Macs too.

all the mac users i know are 50+ years old and adhere to the idea that macs are best for business. not sure if that was once true or not, but i'm not sure what they're basing it on now. they must not be paying attention to what prit near every business is doing/has done, having made the switch to PCs looong ago. dunno, maybe there's still a core set of steve job apologists out there stubbornly reluctant to admit the earth is round? 'it's easier to use!' they say. really? funny, but i'm about as dumb as a person you're likely to ever find, yet i can't say the mind-bending difficulty of using a PC has evinced blood from my ears due to brainial overclocking. i have to admit that when it comes to anything prefaced with an 'i' that i may be ignorant, but at least i'm opiniona

-ted.

i'm teasing, of course, but i have run across some mac users that, for some reason, feel the need to act superior. which i find highly ironic considering that the whole 'ease' of a mac indicates to me a general lack of ability and a thing *not* to be arrogant about. oh, well, it takes all kinds, eh?

i've never heard of that store. are they nationwide or regional?
