I'm starting a new mod entirely of diamond steel sheet metal. I want the entire motherboard to be covered with the plating, except for the CPU socket, RAM, and PCIE card just like the new P67 Sabertooth (http://www.newegg.com/Product/ImageGallery.aspx?CurImage=13-131-702-TS&SpinSet=13-131-702-RS&ISList=13-131-702-Z01%2c13-131-702-Z02%2c13-131-702-Z03%2c13-131-702-Z04%2c13-131-702-Z05&S7ImageFlag=1&Item=N82E16813131702&Depa=0&WaterMark=1&Description=ASUS%20SABERTOOTH%20P67%20%28REV%203.0 %29%20LGA%201155%20Intel%20P67%20SATA%206Gb%2fs%20 USB%203.0%20ATX%20Intel%20Motherboard) motherboard.

Question: How do I nearly lay sheet metal across the board without causing a short? Is there some kind of substrate I can layer under the Diamond steel so it doesn't come in direct contact with the motherboard?

Styrene sheet? Or possibly a layer of acrylic.

either that or just use some 6-32 male-female standoffs at each of the mounting points for the mobo.

any particular reason why you want to go with diamond plate steel? i would think that diamond plate aluminum would be easier to work with.

you could use some thermal pads, might be a bit large, but i've used it int he past without problem. liquid electric tape would be your friend too.

Personally I would do it with standoffs and counter-sunk screws holding the plate to the standoffs. Question; will you be cutting holes for all the expansion slots or just the ones you will be using?

EDIT:
Oooo, I just had an idea.. Do it with all liquid-cooling, and instead of having big holes for the CPU, NB, mosfet, etc heatsinks, just have little circular holes for the tubing.

That sounds sweet.

If you've seen anything I've done in the past, you'll know I don't mess with water cooling anymore....but maybe it's time for a change?

Do they make silver colored radiators?

Come to think of it, I remember you using liquid cooling..didn't know you had a specific aversion to it though.

I don't know of any, but I know people have painted them without affecting the thermal properties. I imagine you could airbrush them or get someone else to.

Unless you want to fab a silver rad...............

Yes they do make Chrome Rads, or they are at least available because I have one. It is a single 120mm fan sized dual pass. 1/2" ID So I would look around on ebay or online retailers. If you get stuck and can't find one to complete the mod, I'll send you mine.

Are you trying to retain the heat conduction of the metal? I mean you could coat the underside with silicon or even rubber cement but I'm not sure how well they would adhere, could also just buy a cheap rubber raincoat to chop up and line the underside with to insulate against electrical conductivity but doing so would also insulate the metal from heat so I dunno, I guess it largely depends on what your goal is and whether or not you are going to be using a top down CPU cooler.

Hmm... Does spray paint conduct electricity? I don't believe it does, at least I don't think the non-metallic stuff does, you could just paint the underside?

theres always chrome grille covers?

make tons and tons of them for motorcycles.

i forgot what motorcycles use for tubing, think it might be 1", but im sure it could be adapted

like other guys said, i'd probably make it float off the mainboard stand-offs. do like a stand off, mainboard then another stand off, your plate then a chrome headed screw. that way you've got enough room for capacitors and such sticking off the mainboard.

^That is freaking nice.

BTW, this mod is back on track. I decided that it will be totally passivew cooled, minus the PSU fan. I'm using the guts from my R2-M5. The specs are going to be;

EDIT: I'm working on that
