I get something nice, something else dies. Got the used new motherboard, one of my other boards kicks the bed.

Go out to take the trash out at the apartment, open up the dumpster side door and on top of the trash bags is an LCD just sitting there.

Go to class, can't stop thinking about it, get home, fire it up. Boom, fires on first time. No Fuss. Free 19" 4x3 Starlogic LCD. Can't beat free.

I keep going good, bad, good, bad. Something new, something dies. My technology world seems to try and balance itself out for whatever reason.

But, free is nice, so I'll forget about the other motherboard.

WINNING!

Free is my favorite flavor!

Yup, it always hits the spot. I was hoping to have to tinker, but not tinkering is alright too.

if it's free it's for me!

Same here.

Got an professional (inkjet) printer while dumpster diving.

Clean off the grass that was dumped on it, soap off the exploded ink cartridge, buy new cartridges, and presto, high-quality printer!

Albeit, the cartridges are NOT CHEAP! HP #s 41 & 45.

The rest is done, though.

Cue Sheen Mug.

Mine goes: bad, bad, bad, bad, bad, bad. If my car is running, my computer is broke. If my computer is running my car is broke. If both happen to break at the same time, my bike also breaks! If it's karma, I've done some really, really terrible things in past lives...:whistler: I hope I at least had a good time while I was doing them!

Maybe I'm just not looking in enough dumpsters? I've read about scientific analysis of 'lucky' people revealing the luckier people to only be more observant of their surroundings. I'm probably too busy grumbling about my bad luck to notice the $100 bill blowing down the sidewalk, the functional i7 system in the trash or the icy keg with the 'free beer' sign on it in my own living-room.

I'm sorry mDust. That does sound like pretty bad luck.

This seems to be about the only thing that my luck balances itself out. Most of the rest of my life seems to be pretty low on luck.

I'm not sure mine is really balancing itself out anyway. It seems more like a 2:1 ratio of bad to good. Because really, not only did the motherboard die, I just had that wonky hard drive too. So 2:1. It's just the little bit of luck probably acts as a highlight for my day, so I don't notice the crappy stuff as much, lol.

And my car has been dying / having problems over and over again lately too, I've just been fixing it by hand so the sense of accomplishment has been tending to overtake the feeling of anger when something goes wrong.

For a while, there were three working computers in our house.

Then my lappy's HDD died.
Got it fixed.

Then my mobo's AGP slot fried.
Still needs replacing.

3rd compy is an HP.

No worries. I'm not looking for sympathy or anything. I'm so unlucky at times that it's funny to me. I'm one of those people that laugh at themselves (usually) instead of getting angry or depressed. I just expect bad things to happen all the time. In fact, my car just broke down again today--power steering pump seized up and the pulley won't turn. When I start it it makes an awful screeching noise as the belt starts to burn. Not sure how I'll get it home to work on it, but it's mostly downhill so maybe I'll get lucky for once and it'll roll home! Though, I don't know if I want to fix it and risk my computer dying again. It's always been one or the other and so regularly that I suspected sabotage for a while...
I enjoy working on my car (and computer, and bike for that matter) when it isn't costing me a ton of money. Self accomplishment is a great feeling. So great, in fact, that I think I'll bottle and market it! mDust's Self Accomplishment Tonic...catchy!

Lol, is the third one not working because it's an HP?

Ironically enough, the HP has been rock-solid with Vista (even more ironic) since my brother bought it new.

Pulled a dusty old compaq out of an alleyway a year or so ago. It had been raining so I never fancied plugging it in.

A few weeks ago, I needed another 2GB of DDR2. Cracked it open, transferred the RAM, hey presto!

My uncle used to stop anytime he saw a computer sitting out next to a trash can. He'd grab the gear no matter how old it looked. Quite a few surprises came from those machines. I think when some people can't get a computer to work right they just throw away a perfectly good machine since it's 'obviously' broken. You never know what you might find in those things.

Also, just because it's rained on doesn't mean anything. I've submerged motherboards and graphics cards in soapy water (powered off and out of the case of course) with no ill effects after 48 hours of dry time in front of a fan. I did dunk it in 100% isopropyl before drying to get most of the water off though. So if you guys ever see a sweet gaming computer floating in a mud puddle, don't be afraid to snatch that bad boy up!
