OK... so yeah... this is post number one on this forum... so i figured i would make it a good one... first off... i have used this forum before to sift threw ideas... and get some tech help... but i figured since i am starting a big project of my own (started it 2 weeks or so ago) i might as well contribute to this site...

enough intro...

time for the thoughts and ideas and were i am now...

first off... i live in okinawa japan... so this last tsunami and earthquake... didn't really effect us... we got like 1 meter waves... no big deal here... but... with my job and who i work for we have been affect for the last few months and work as really been picking up... until these last few weeks... and since i needed a new case for my editing comp... i figured i would dedicate it to the reason i a have been so busy lately...

FUKUSHIMA REACTOR NUMBER 1 is the main thing i am trying replicate... i have no type of skills what so ever out side of satellite communications specialist... so i have no clue what i was doing when i started... and using this site and others i got were i am now

this is the image i wanted to recreate with my case

http://thedailycap.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/03/fukushima-Reactor.jpg

the reactor on the left... and its cooling tower in the middle...

i got a freebee fish tank from a friend i helped out... tit for tat baby

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3101/5706059519_91e96eecf8_z.jpg

as you can see using simple strips of perforated metal from the local hardware store (makeman) and some alan screws and bolts i started the base...

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3450/5709609964_6aee3c36a9_z.jpg
i built the top and base basically the same... the top will get more reinforcements to help with the wait of other components that wont get submerged

if i need to do any kind of upgrading or repair to the pc i made some simple ass flip out tabs for resting it on the edge of the tank so it can drip dry before working on it

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3224/5709880576_a9863ce6e6_z.jpg

this is a moch up mother board power supply hdd's and cd drive to test fit with...

http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3247/5719045120_46a03571fe_z.jpg

my original idea was to use an old pc case and tear it apart to mount the motherboard... but i found some decent eye hook screws and some safety wire to be the best option... and it would look cooler if it was just suspended in the oil

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2147/5718483443_d212d061f6_z.jpg

my next step was to paint it... now... keep in mind i am an art major... but i hate painting hahahaha i am a photographer not a painter hahahaha

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2782/5720883760_6b7a021182_z.jpg
first i did a base coat of the white similar to the fukushima towers... so that the inside and outside will have the same painted design

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5024/5724443614_b7bfecf59e_z.jpg

now this is were i am at right now on the case... the paint is applied the case is assembled... and all that is left is to add a pump some oil and get the real computer in its place... hahahah instead of this moch up... but i think i will keep the moch up in there and test it with the moch up... so i can see if it works well enough and keeps the temps down ...

BUT... thats not all...

after a few days of deliberating... my original idea was to just slap a pump into the tank and just keep the oil circulating for cooling...

NOW... i wanted to go big or go home... so i had a prechiller for my wart chiller for making homebrew... and i thought to my self... man that would make a god oil cooler (since thats what it actually is hahahaha) so i decided to do once of two things...

and this is were i need yalls help... deciding to use 1 or 2...

1 i bought some copper and twisted it up and made a tower and stuck it in it with the pump at the base... similar to the tower in the picture at the top...

keep in mind the copper will be held up in place... not just sitting there
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3322/5726101786_8361fb8835_z.jpg

2 i could shove the oil cooler with a fan or two on it in the tower with the pump at the base

keep in mind this will have 1 or 2 80mm fans on it to help cool even more
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3539/5729314808_c0f31664f2_z.jpg

now remember both of these towers designs will get painted the traditional red and white striped similar to all towers so dont let the color of the copper or the black radiator fool you... its all going to be white and red

http://www.faqs.org/photo-dict/photofiles/list/5321/6976tower_antenna.jpg
thats the color scheme... if your not familiar...

i also have some led lights that are going on top of the tower...

i also have a kit i am trying to put together... but i dont read or speak japanese... so this **** is hard hahahahahahah

http://eleshop.jp/shop/g/g401913/

that is the kit i am trying to build...

seriously... its a radiowave detector... or as they call it... radiation detector hahahahahahahahahahahaha... so if you have a wireless anything... or even just a power supply next to it... it will go off... and show up as red led's... but i bought replacement green led's so it will light up green... hahahahaha

i am going to have the case light up blue and green with some other led's also... i have been trying to figure out a way to make it smoke too hahahhahahaha but i dont think i will worry about that until it is all done and i need a new project hahahaha

ok...

so dont pass judgment too hard... and if you enjoy this... let me know... maybe later on after i am done i will make another one... and sell this one or something...

i have been thinking about making one that is a computer in the back... and a fish tank up front... or a computer on bottom and a fish tank on top... not a hard thing to make... just need to get back state side and buy some cheaper stuff...

So uh good news bad news time...

Good news is I FINALLY GOT A JOB STATESIDE I LIKE!!!! Sorry for the caps im excited .. I will be working i maryland sooo that means after almost 4 years im coming back to america.... Maryland isnt texas but its definitely not qatar or japan hahahahahahah

Bad news .... I only got two weeks to finish this thing and get it were i want it with out putting oil in it then pack it up and ship it to Merica!!! So... This could be put on hold for up to 3 months because how long it takes for international house hold good shipments

So... Im sorry for the one or two people who actually even care hahahaha

But tomorrow night at work i will be assembling the radiation detection board hahahah. And then monday or tuesday i will try and finish the tower... And maybe paint it ...

So anyone in the havre de grace to riverside area in maryland want to help me finish this or start my next tank in september... I should be moved in and ready to go by then. Thanks for reading

ooh, havre de grace isn't too far away from me. only about an hour drive or less.

hit me up when you get here. i'd love to meet up and check this out in person.

edit: i see riverside is even closer to me.

Congrats on the job! I'm guessing it's at Phillips or Aberdeen? Yeah, there are a few of us in the central MD area. I'll have to add you to my list. :D

As for the project, it sounds interesting. Not very many full-immersion mods around here.

yeah and the town house in river side looks like it has a fenced in back yard and a deck... plus a basement for homebrew... because beer making is very very very important hahahahah

i think this one and my next one (the half fish tank half computer is going to be fun) the only issue i have with the next one is i have to make sure i move into my new place before i start it... because i dont know were i want it or how big or small i want it

Nothing wrong with posting a homebrew build. :D We have quite a few brewers around here (in fact, I think some of the moderators are). As long as you're not promoting illegal activity I think you should be find. ;)

home brewing beer is perfectly legal here in the states.

Well aside from posting about brewing... I finally got the chance to something productive

I built the radiation detector( radio wave detector) and i feel like a kid testing it out on every cell phone i can... So i am pretty freaking excited that it worked on the first go

If i can figure out a way to compy the images url from my flickr account via the iphone i will post the two shots i have of it

If not its the most recent pics on my flickr page

The plan is to now Pull the sensor off and place it on top of the case and set the batteries up there too with a switch then place the board in a box with an acrylic cover on it that has been scuffed to create a box of glowing green radiation... So that any object that puts off signals around the range of the sensor will make the box glow...

I thought about putting a cone dish ( because a true parabolic dish would make the reception range even more narrow than it already is) so that it will have a wider range... And place that on the tower but there is no dish on the towers only whip antenna ... But i still might do it... Not Sure though

I feel like im talking to my self but it helps me think of ideas if i type them out or write them down... Sorry

It looks like that sensor is just a small inductor, so if you extend it, make sure you twist the wires. I forget why, something about maintaining the magnetic field.

It looks like that sensor is just a small inductor, so if you extend it, make sure you twist the wires. I forget why, something about maintaining the magnetic field.

twisted pairs just keep its from getting interference... its a good thing and the wire i have is already twisted and will end up getting electrical tape on it...

it has a potentiometer on it so even if there was some loss in the cable its going to get amped... and since i dont have to pass any coms on this it can have some saturation... because it wouldnt hurt anything... its just for looks

the only thing i am worried about is that the sensor can only pick stuff up in its line of sight... which is weird because i figured it would work more like a crap whip antenna... so i am going to build something to help bring the signal in more... a simple piece of wire could help ... but i am going to try and figure out a good way to make it better... maybe a wire parabolic or something like that... thats later on anyways... i still have to make the box this thing is going to set in... finish making the case look like it was in an explosion... and drink beer along the way...

plus i have to move to maryland hahahaha

ok guys... so ... i finally got my butt back to work on this thing...

first thing i did today was make lights for the tower...

the lights are the tower will be at two places... one on the top ... and one a bit down from the top

the one on the top is actually going to be a flashing light... similar to most towers... with a twist though

it will be flashing with the Hard drive... i made an adapter so that it will plug right into the motherboards HDD LED spot... and will run all the way up the tower ... so that the top of the tower blinks with the hard drive...
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3287/5780125664_b144e7ee3d_z.jpg

the other led will just be a power led... and once i turn this beast on...

but how am i going to turn this bitch on you ask... and what else will come on once i do hahahahah

well how about push button start hahahahah
http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2495/5780119038_fb7361ed01_z.jpg

and some blue LEDs for inside the case
http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3649/5779982060_88ccea2081_z.jpg

next will be the radio sensor extension and the battery extensions...

then i will be working on the radiation box for the radio sensor

i like your ideas for the tower leds.

licenseless
06-01-2011, 03:35 AM
i like your ideas for the tower leds.

yeah it was the only thing i could think that would keep it semi authentic yet feel like a computer...

i just mocked up all the pipes and hoses to see how many ring clamps to go pick up... plus to see if the simple pipe tray i made will work... i also need to build the pipe tray on the two pipes going up... and then figure out if i want the trays connecting or not ...

http://farm6.static.flickr.com/5267/5785084643_57556a065c_z.jpg

i also need to figure out how i am going to stabilize the whole thing... and once its done... and then in two weeks i have to break it all down for shipment back to AMERICA hahahah

put my resignation in at my job and signed the paper work at my new job and i leave in 3 to 4 weeks... no later than the 29th...

so

this build might get put on hold ... depending on how much weight i have the money to ship this out via air mail to the states... or if i am going to wait until September for it all to show up then...

anyways... have a good summer guys...

For those corner pieces, instead of joining the copper tube and the copper corner with rubber tubing, have you considered soldering them with a 180-degree copper joint? It would give it a cleaner feel, imo. Oh, and btw, make sure you don't use any aluminum components in the loop.

just curious? why no aluminium...

and i am thinking about doing the 90 degree solder pieces when i get state side... or try and fine a better system besides copper tubing... i honestly dont like it... i have been looking at it all day... and it looks rugged... i want a cleaner look... and its hard to get good stuff here on island... copper piping stuff is a pain in the rear to find. Make man sells the stuff but for the most part its usually the wrong size... or only 1 and then i have to place an order which could take weeks to get here... so i am kind of glad i will be going state side so i can find a lowes or home depot hahahahahaha i might end up scrapping a lot of it... just so that i can get it to standard instead of metric on some of the stuff... but we will see

as you can see X88X i was using bent pipe for my 90's and tubing to connect it... the bent pipe was straight ... then i laid it across a pully from a truck... and hit it a few times with a rubber mallet... thats one reason i am tired of living on this island... its hard to get stuff hahahahaha... i mean its some were here... but finding it is difficult being that i cant read japanese and the phone book doesn't come in english hahahahaahh even friends of mine that speak japanese are like "shoot man, i aint no plumber... how the heck should i know were to get that stuff" hahahahaha

@Ichbin... really hahahahah REALLY the NRC hahahahahahah thats pretty funny... no man i am going to keep working for the government at the proving grounds... should be fun. I got a buddy working there and he tells me its awesome!!! so i am excited.

for those of you who dont get the NRC joke... this is the NRC headquarters location

If you mix aluminum and copper in a watercooling loop it's almost a guaranteed recipe for corrosion. Dielectric charges and whatnot.

[QUOTE=x88x;330350]If you mix aluminum and copper in a watercooling loop it's almost a guaranteed recipe for corrosion. Dielectric charges and whatnot.[/QOUTE]

Ah but this is a complete minerial oil tank... The tank is going to be filled with oil and the pump and hoses will just recirculate the oil for the purpose of cooling the whole tank... Thats why i went with such a large pump and caliber of hose...

But i just learned that copper and aluminium plus water equals bad... You know i think i remember hearing that some were before but i have never needed that knowledge for anything until now... I never used copper for anything considering my fish tanks were salt and when i had pirahnas here i also had shrimp and such for cleaning

Thanks for the heads up though x88x

x88x
06-01-2011, 12:15 PM
Hmm, I guess since mineral oil isn't electrically conductive it shouldn't cause a problem if aluminum and copper are mixed. What happens with water/etc is that a dielectric charge is built up between the aluminum and copper, rather like in a battery between aluminum and copper electrodes. The surfaces ionize and corrode.

Ok... so you guys know that right now i live in okinawa... i work with the government doing comms in support of some crazy stuff right now...

the soldiers i work next to have been doing missions up in mainland in support of the assistance...

its been a pretty intense at times... and one of my buddys got a chance to take his camera with him... he came back about a month ago and gave me all his pictures (about a thousand) to go threw and edit for him...

hes not a photographer so (being that i am) he asked me to edit and bring out the best and worst of all the shots he took...

so... i know this isnt about the case mod... but i just want you guys to understand that i work hand in hand with some of this stuff going on and that this build... is by no means disrespectful to those who have and who will continue to loose there lives in mainland...

if you would like to donate money to help please donate ... and understand that threw out this build i am hoping to build awareness and remind people that there are still 4 reactors in mainland japan that will more than likely keep taking the lives of people over the next 10 to 20 years... its a sad reminder...

well hopefully this move back to America wont mess me up to much. the moving inspector just came threw today to see how much stuff we have to move... he was a little shocked by the case and when i explained it laughed and thought it was "sugoi" ( or awesome)

so that was kinda cool

the come and pick everything up on the 24th... so i only got a couple of weeks left with it ... hopefully i can finish off the tower and the wiring before i ship it... and cross my fingures everthing shows up in one piece

holy crap guys... i just looked and its been almost a year since i did anything with this thread...

first off... dont worry she isnt done... and she isnt going to be scrapped... i just had a few snaggs when coming back to the states... ie ... the few places i was looking at were a bit of a disaster when i got here... so looking for a place took almost 2 months... then after my stuff got here (it arrived from japan on the day that we had the earth quake here ... no joke the guys moving my stuff were like WTF... this ****s from japan hahahahaha)

then i had to buy two vehicles ... one for the everyday stuff... and one for fun...

the fun one is this beauty...

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7198/6838894258_5dfa536b30_b.jpg

so i had to spend some time on her... shes doing better... needs more work...

then after that... i had to visit family... and fly them out here and have them bring my dog that my mom was holding... she was so excited ... it was like i never left... dogs never forget man

... and then go site seeing since its been 5 years since i have been back in america

some pics from those adventures ...

http://www.flickr.com/photos/robertfischer/sets/72157629326597920/
http://www.flickr.com/photos/robertfischer/sets/72157629615795125/

http://www.flickr.com/photos/robertfischer/sets/72157628973702745/

... and i had to gain 20lbs on american foods... then loose 20lbs...

then i got lyme disease... NO ****ING JOKE... i am jsut now getting over the lyme disease... probably from the trip to cunningham falls or skyline drive... either way... i literally just got my brain back a couple of days ago... i had Alzheimer and arthritis from it... looks like some of the arthritis is going to stay for life now... pretty ****ty... but nothing i cant handle

so... on to what i worked on for like an hour here and there... before i lost my mind... and what i am finally getting back to tonight...

so the original idea was to do a mix between copper piping and rubber tubing... **** THAT... im in america now... i can get good tools and things to work with... so x88x i am taking your idea of the 90 degree bends...

i made the intake and exhaust piping of the mineral already...

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7229/7192707654_de9a20d21a_b.jpg

then i changed up the idea i had with the cooling tower...

originally i was going to do the oil cooler from a car... or bent copper lines... again... **** that... i got 90 degree bends... and i have started working on them...

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7092/7192703368_5a6d76ed3c_b.jpg

now what you are seeing in that pic is the inner tubing that will go inside the tower from before...

i also changed out all the screws and nuts on the case for pop rivets... its more permanent and is more stable so i needed less support pieces...

now its time for my favorite show GAME OF THRONES... and i am a week or two behind because of ****ing lyme disease... so i got to get to it

oh and you guys from maryland... this summer we got to get together and show off projects... and make some beer and drink some beer

sorry again for this late revival... but life has been all ****ed up...

im in bel air now so if you live near hit me up

dude, bel air is less than an hour from me.

but damn man, what an epic post!

**** has been pretty ****ing crazy over this last year... so i am glad it entertained ya man hahahahah

where you located man... and what project are you working on... i would like to see what people have going on around here...

also... i think at the end of the month i am brewing beer... so if you are interested (and over 21) please do come par take in this wonderful thing ...

also... i will post about how to sweat solder later tonight if i get off work in time... so maybe this post can evolve some more over the next few days

ok... so ... i think what i got going on so far is going to work...

this is how the structure and cooling system in the cooling tower should look when finished
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7243/7199819394_e9768c0568_b.jpg

as you see the center pipe going most of the way straight up will be the inlet of the of the fluid after it goes threw the pump...

then it will spiral down and go out the side and up into the tank...

were you see the yellow tape... i still have to mark off and solder...

if you are curious how i am doing this... here is a simple step by step... not very accurate but hey... it freaking works

first step... make a mess

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7096/7199823354_d42ea48ce4_b.jpg
these are all the things i use...

basically thats everything you need...

copper pipe
pipe cutter or dremil which i actually used more than i did the pipe cutter
flux and brush
solder
propane torch
gloves
pliers
sand paper (cloth type)
sharpie

its real simple...

after you make your cuts and you align were you want your pieces to go... mark them with a sharpie or if you are doing simple bends you dont need a sharpie just make sure you align it properly

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7225/7199832850_9d11b2bc7e_b.jpg

then after you made your marks (if i was doing more than one connection i would make multiple marks to make sure i knew which connection went where)

pull it apart then get ready with the sand paper
http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5238/7199835364_fff8bd3445_b.jpg

then hit it with the paper
just a quick pass south of the mark you made ( i have been told this isn't necessary with new pipe... but i do it anyways)
http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5336/7199837960_a4a8102494_b.jpg

now brush on a light coat of flux where you did your sanding
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7232/7199841006_9e2f169022_b.jpg

connect it back... duh
http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7231/7199844154_77705276a2_b.jpg

next you put it on the flame... (it was hard for me to hold the phone/camera and the pipe plus the solder and the torch so this picture isnt accurate... but it gets the job done)
http://farm6.staticflickr.com/5442/7199830808_155f518d78_b.jpg

apply the flame directly over the connection you are making and let it sit until you notice the flux has melted then touch the solder to the connection and it will melt quickly threw your connection and boom... you are done...

if you still need help soldering... this is a good vid

i have to work mids tomorrow... so i have to stay up all night tonight...

so i guess finishing this is a must to help keep me up...

HOLY CRAP GUYS... the soldering is done!!!

for now. hahahaha

i might add another pipe and i might change around the t sections that eject the water into the tank... i might change them to a single pipe with wholes all across it. I do like the flow that i am getting... and after running for 10 minutes straight... no leaks and i used the pump to empty out half of the tank before i dumped it... so it was a pretty flawless run.

i take that back... i had one leak... it leaked at the top of the motor... because i didnt have a ring clamp to tighten it out... its 9 at night and i wasnt about to run to damn Lowes for a single whose clamp just to do this test hahahahahahaha i am ok with the 4 drops of water it leaked hahahahaha

oh and yes... i did run water threw it so that i can clean it out and put a nice layer of corrosion on the pipe hahahahahah see what i did there hahahahaha

no really copper wont corriod that fast... but i had to make sure there was no extra flux and that there was no leaks... i am going to let is sit in the sun for a day when its not raining to dry it all the way out...

i start the actual mineral oil in a few weeks... when i can order some ... and when i finish the case... hahahahaah

holy crap... progress... wooo whoooo

this vid is of it running... the noise you hear in the back ground isnt the pump... its my air conditioner ... hahahaha

well... things are taking a change on this case... i wouldnt say i am scrapping it... i would say... i am modifying it so that its completed in next to no time at all hahahaha

so i have completely scrapped the idea of a suspended mother board... and just went with a couple of modified computer cases... so that it can be completed very soon

basically i took two computer cases... and welded them together with some thin steel rods and a piece of sheet metal at the bottom... next i will screw on a few rubber stubs for the base but i am finished for now... because i have to have the computer

on the 22 and 23 ... if anyone is in new jersey... hit me up... i will be at the wall aka Gauntlet doing video and photography for a site called www.everythingdrift.com

so the comp needs to be up and running by then so i can edit the video footage... hopefully i can accomplish this... seeing as how i have to purcahase a **** load of mineral oil to do this...

anyone know of a good site to do so as cheap as possible hahahahaha

i will post pics of the progress in a few

That doesn't show the crappy placement of the hard drive and disk drive... But I was told Friday I would be shooting video and pics for E.D. so I scrapped the othe case and welded this crap together... Keep in mind I just taught my self to weld this weekend hahahahahahah so don't be harsh hahahahah
It's hooked up right now out side of the tank so I could make sure it worked... I still need to attach all the bells and whistles like lights bubbles and radiation sensor... That's all simple bolt on crap

Anyways... Enjoy... Or don't hahahahahaha

For mineral oil, check farm supply shops or veterinary clinics that deal with horses or other large animals. Mineral oil is used as a laxative on them and so you can find large bottles of it for cheaper than getting it in tiny bottles from a drug store. If that's a 10g aquarium expect to pay around $135-150 or so for the oil. It's usually $15/gal from what I've seen. Also, make sure there are no additives...needs to be 100% mineral oil.

Also remember, mineral oil absorbs heat quickly, but dissipitates it slowly.

I don't think that is a property of the oil itself, but of an uncirculated fluid in a tank. Pugets original build hit around 80C due to not being actively cooled because that's where the temp differentials leveled out. Heat transfer is governed by a temp difference and surface area: a 50C processor will dump heat into 40C oil faster than 49C oil given the same surface area. Likewise with the oil to the air...this is why cold, winter air over a watercooling rad can make a huge difference. Greater surface area, such as a radiator, will also increase dissipation rate. I would pump the oil through a rad just like water cooling. Otherwise, the oil can only passively dissipate heat via the air surrounding the sides of the tank. Just be aware that the head and flow rate will be severely decreased due to the extra viscosity. Viscosity decreases as temp rises though too. There's likely some magical, optimal point but that's far beyond the scope of this discussion and my mathematical abilities.:D

yes, yes, and yes hahahahahahahahah unfortunetly 15 dollars a gallon is what i saw too... so i was expecting to spend about 165... because i want to buy an extra gallon just in case... the computer should disapate about as much as the copper needs to fill up... so i should nee 10 gallons... but we will see.

these are all reasons why i am not sure what pump i am going to use.

the pump i have now is good... BUT... i am not sure its going to be just as good once things get moving... i dont have enough of an understanding of fluid dynamics to calculate at what rate the oil will disipate and at how fast or slow it will need to flow.

i was told though that any bit of cooling will be plenty... and that the setup i am using is good

i do however still have a small oil cooler from a car (hahahaha) that i can use if need be ... i would just put it behind the tank and run 4 80 mm fans on it... and boom cooling accomplished. But i am hoping the copper is over kill and there is no need for the radiator.

the pump is a trial and error issue... i got the pump for next to nothing a year ago... so i am using it... if its not enough i will upgrade and cut new hoses to fit it.

my only real problem here is that it will be ugly... hahahahahaha but it will be fun...

i do have the computer up and running right now out side of the tank and just in open air it is sitting steady at 32C

so i am sure everything will work fine

thanks guys.

I couldn't whip out equations on this topic either so no worries there. All you need to be sure of is that the oil will never approach the CPUs tj maximum. Which is usually stupidly high (80-90C) for Intel chips and around 60-62C for AMD chips. I would try to keep the oil below 50C no matter the ambient air temp or how long the system has been running.

i was told though that any bit of cooling will be plenty... and that the setup i am using is goodFor the most part, this is true. It depends on the tj max though. If you put an AMD chip in the original Puget system, it would have died pretty fast.

my only real problem here is that it will be ugly... hahahahahaha but it will be fun...Once you get it running, hit it with a hammer and sprinkle iodine-131 and caesium-134 on it. It's post-disaster Fukushima! You will win awards... (:eek:Too soon?)
As a modder, fun is number one, and making useful or pretty things are 2 and 3...their order depends on whether you are the 'form follows function' type or not.

It's so cool because heat is transferred from heatsinks to the air, which rises away to the ceiling and draws cooler air towards the computer. If you let the computer run long enough, the room will heat up and the cooling effect will be slightly diminished. You can think of the oil bath as a really tiny room. Cool oil will carry heat away from the heatsinks, but will only rise a few inches to the top of the tank. Oil conducts heat much faster than air just due to the difference in density, but will heat up faster due to the smaller volume. Once submerged, you can expect temps fairly close to ambient for a bit, but it will slowly rise to equilibrium. The amount of active airflow, surface area, materials (copper vs aluminum vs glass vs acrylic) that make up that surface area and ambient air temp determine how low that equilibrium point is.

well that was the point of doing so much copper in the cooling tower. There is a a lot of copper... no acrylic ... all glass tank and no aluminum in the cooling line. The copper should do its job... and to make sure it does like i said before i still have an oil cooler from a car i could stash away behind the tank with fans on it to help the cooling process work like it should.

only issue now is i have all these stupid doctors bills from this lyme disease sitting at my desk right now... and priority is set at paying them off before i go to new jersey on the 22nd and 23rd... (and now maybe the 24th... my buddy just won free tickets to the Metallica concert that same weekend i am to be shooting video in new jersey so he wants to know if i can join him the second day) so i might have to wait until july 1st to buy this 160 dollars worth of oil... wow... 160 dollars worth of oil

thats a lot of oil... yet a spinal tap only costs me (after the insurance takes care of pretty much everything) 60 dollars

stupid speculators making oil cost so much  hahahahah

anyways thanks for the info there Dust... its reassurance more than anything that i am going to fine hahahahaha

thanks for viewing... more updates coming soon... i will have the lights and stuff installed this weekend :crossed:

I don't mean to imply doubt. What you have will work as is, but that equilibrium point may be a bit higher than you might want or expect. If that is the case, then you will need to install that intercooler.

The fluids (liquid metals and specialized, extremely low-viscosity oils designed for low temp baths) I was looking into for my sig project would have cost 10s of thousands for a 10gal volume...which ended that line of inquisition pretty damn quick! A couple hundred for mineral oil didn't sound bad at all in retrospect...

Getting sick is unproductive and prevents you from partaking in fun activities if you didn't know...knock it off!

they have me setting up in july for an MS specialist... last year the docs thought i was having neurological shut down from lyme disease... now they think I was misdiagnosed with Multiple Sclurosis... got a **** ton of things done lately... but the computer has been at the bottom of the list...

i taught my self to weld so i could rehuild the case that the computer is going to be sitting in... and found a cheap as place to buy metal... and realized... **** IT!!! I know how to weld i can make anything... and have been making anything...

so i got my work cut out for me... plus i am now a certified black smith hahahah to much metal in my life hahaha

so i promise this thread isnt dead for ever... i have just been trying to rebuild the computer housing... and ended up rebuilding my basement...
i am going to make a new metal stand for it to sit on too ... so that will be nice
