Project : Synthetica by AnG3L
-------------------------------------

Intro:

Hello my friends again! Time for a new project!
This time I am going to follow my friends advice (Chris!) and replicate a design by the famous
architect Zaha Hadid!
This is not a copy of the design you are about to see but a replicate of her particular style!

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%201/ideal-house-zaha-hadid11.jpg

It was a very difficult task for me to choose the perfect design amongst hundreds of beautiful
structures and buildings.
I had to take under consideration the placement of the components and the heat dissipation (airflow, materials etc)
This design though with the proper changes was the only one that fitted in my concept as all the other designs due to the very "free flaw" technique Zaha Hadid has, would have been huge and not so functional.

The other problem I faced was the finding of the right material. I choose so many materials but some of them were heavy, some of them needed molds and some of them werent durable enough. So I ended up with 2 different kinds of fiberglass and probably some modeling paste.

The main piece that I will work with will be acrylic, were I will do all the curves and crazy design with the fiberglass. The rest that will house the components will be aluminum. Most of the work will be done by using cnc and laser machines.

So far I worked around 200 hours on the designs and the concept. This mod will be watercooled even if I was going air this time I changed my mind due to the heat and aesthetic reasons!
All the parts are going to be removable, not a single rivet in my designs so far! As always I give emphasis first on the functionality.
The colors are going to be blue metallic and black!

So lets begin our 5th humble journey!! I promise that you will enjoy this as I have a lot of surprises for you! (No painting techniques as many people dislike them)

So lets begin!!

As I told you in the intro, the main part that it will word as a "top panel" will be the architect replicate theme.
The material I am going to "build" on it will be 3mm clear acrylic. A lot of windows will be attached on it and also radiator ventilation holes and mesh.
Here are the parts after the cnc "preparation!"

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%201/P5170123.jpg

The main top panel piece was routed in the bending areas for more accurate and tight bend.

This small piece is a part of the reservoir stand! You will love it once I finish it!

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%201/P5170126.jpg

Some windows will be bended too.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%201/P5170141.jpg

Some of the windows bended already!

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%201/P5170142.jpg

This small 2cm acrylic piece will be glued together with 4 more the same to become the angle of the components chassis. This
will also hold the box together. You will have to be patient till we get there though!!
In 8 of them (top and bottom parts) I made threads for the screws that will hold the box together.

So guys time to post the next update!!
As you saw in the first update/post I showed you a piece of clear 2cm acrylic that I am going to
use for the main chassis as corners and also as supporters for the aluminum construction.
I cut 20 pieces as they are going to be 4 corners 10cm each.

I had to face some problems though. The laser machine didnt cut the pieces right, so when the people in the acrylic shop tried to remove them from the main piece, they broke most of them.
Also they were cut pretty unshaped so my files and sanding skills had to take action.

Here are glued with acrylic cement glue.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%202/P5190001.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%202/P5190003.jpg

The filing and sanding took me 10 hours in total as I had to fix the broken pieces also with isopon and titanium wait for them to dry sand again and repeat the process till I had the perfect shape. Unnecessary trouble but hey, we are modders we have to fix things that are broken!

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%202/P5190004.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%202/P5190005.jpg

Filing each side and then sand them with 150 grit sandpaper. One more problem I faced was that my mouse sander broke during the work and I bought a new Bosch one.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%202/P5190006.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%202/P5200022.jpg

Isopon and titanium for maximum durability even though isopon was more than enough, my
perfection madness told me to use titanium too.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%202/P5200023.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%202/P5210025.jpg

Finished shots for now. More to follow soon hopefully!

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%202/P5220035.jpg

Next job was to sand the reservoir stand pieces and prepare them for assembly.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%202/P5200012.jpg

The pieces glued together with plastic welding glue. I also cut the 5mm acrylic rods that I am going to attach on the stand for... aesthetic reasons mostly!

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%202/P5200014.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%202/P5200013.jpg

Here it is fully assembled. As you might notice the edge of the acrylic isnt smooth due to the !#!@!%$ lasers machine bad functioning. So I will have to sand it and smooth it isnt it????

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%202/P5200020.jpg

After 2 and a half hours I finished sanding the edges!! The inside of the circles its not though as it holds the reservoir pretty tight and I didnt want to mess with that. Here is the final piece.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%202/P5210026.jpg

Thats it for now guys thanks for reading my worklog. More to follow, hopefully soon as I need the hardware and aluminum pieces in order to continue!!

You could just flame polish the edges. It's a little tricky but it works awesome.

AnG3L
05-23-2011, 05:23 PM
I didnt want to polish them as I am about to paint this part! ;) Also polishing without getting that surface even and smooth would look pro. The laser machine vibrates a lot so the cut isnt clear and straight. Made in China FTL.

Now lets move on with the work I did these days.
I installed some of the windows on the mod. Two more to be installed later on. Some of the holes will be uncovered or I might use mesh, still not sure about that.
Marked the holes for 2 mm drilling and 3mm threads.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%203/P5240014.jpg

I also cut some 1mm acrylic in small pieces to cover the threaded holes to cover them so they wont fill from the fiberglass I am going to add later on.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%203/P5240016.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%203/P5240017.jpg

Next thing I did was some "guides" out of modeling paste in order to work my way with the fiberglass later.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%203/P5240073.jpg

Thats all for now guys! The creation of the main top part will take a long time as its very difficult to follow that free flow design. It requires a lot of sanding, filling with fiberglass and isopon and sanding again till I will manage to create a smooth surface. Also I will have to bend the top piece in a way that it will not interfere with the radiators and all the other components and then attach it on the main piece. The part in the corner that is missing it will be a half circle bended acrylic which I am going to add later.

Thanks for watching more to follow later! :)

Bending that first big piece of plexi needed some faith in the strip heater if it didn't go right the whole piece was f****d :D

I cant say that it will be a plexi mod as the acrylic is used only as a "frame" for the creation. I am going to add fiberglass and isopon for finish and then I am going to paint it.
I believe you gonna like this one! ;)

Ok guys a midnight update (basically its 1 AM here!) its coming your way!!
Lets get down to business asap!!

First off all I glued the modeling paste parts on the main frame as I dont want them to move around while I am going to work with the fiberglass.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%204/P5250077.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%204/P5250079.jpg

The aluminum parts arrived from the laser!! Here you see the 2 radiator stands. I am going to bend them later on and also do some minor modifications if its needed.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%204/P5250082.jpg

From left to right. Hdd and dvd stand, ssd stand and power and restart button holder. I know that its difficult to imagine how these parts are going to look like fully assembled and finished but after the bending and the addition of all the extra pieces you will know! :) A tip though. I am going to "hang" everything on the top part of the case....

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%204/P5250083.jpg

The top and bottom part of the case.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%204/P5250088.jpg

These are the sides of the box. From bottom to top. Ssd window, power and restart button, dvd bay, ventilation for 8mm fan. The piece on the side its the PSU stand.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%204/P5250089.jpg

And this is the ssd window which is going to sit flush on the aluminum side.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%204/P5250091.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%204/P5250095.jpg

As you see I decided to redo the corners of the case as I encountered some problems when I tried to fit them but also I didnt like them after all the fixing!
Here as you see I did the threads on 8 pieces (4 for the top and 4 for the bottom)

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%204/P5260101.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%204/P5260102.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%204/P5260107.jpg

Glued together with acrylic cement glue.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%204/P5260112.jpg

After a lot of sanding!

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%204/P5270114.jpg

I also cut a 3 mm piece of acrylic in a way that will allow some light *white ambient lighting effect* to "escape" through the bottom. In that way a gave a little space to the sides that are going to be attached on the case, so they wont be tight and get scratched while you remove them.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%204/P5270120.jpg

A big hole for the screw to pass easier into the thread.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%204/P5270123.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%204/P5270125.jpg

Glued and ready for some drum sanding and filing/sanding.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%204/P5270126.jpg

Finished!

And here is a quick shot of how the case is going to look like. The sides are going to be attached on the acrylic corners also on the top part it will be the motherboard, psu and rads.

I'm curious due to your source of inspiration and the fact that you are hanging components from the 'roof'. I'm more of a brutalist or minimalist but aesthetic shapes that also serve a purpose appeal to me.

I wish I had friends with a multi-million [insert currency here] shop. Heh, I wish I had an empty room somewhere to use as a workshop...you're a lucky guy!:)

Indeed the overall design is somehow "strange" yet unique and thanks for pointing that and actually reading the thread instead of just browsing the pictures as many others do!!

I am a lucky guy if you consider that I mod on the washing machine as I have no bench and on my bed and floor which are my secondary benches!! I live in a very small house with one room and I also live with a pension of 450 Euro per month after the series of accidents I had 5 years ago.

I feel rich though as I have 2 hands and 2 eyes and I bless the Lord for that and for my friends who work in the laser and cnc industries.

So you are lucky too my friend, bless the Lord for what you have and let your passion to modding do the rest!!! :) Thanks for your wonderful comment my friend!

Its time for my next update lads!
I did many and different things as I have to wait for the components to arrive in order to take measures and move on to the rest.

First I did some bending on the top part of my creation. I had to take in count the height and the position of the front 240 rad and the 120 one on the back side of the mod. This is going to be attached with fiberglass on the main body and then work my way with modeling paste and more fiberglass etc etc.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%205/P5290008.jpg

As you can see I am using my "hand made" brake to bend the aluminum parts. The bend its not so tight as with a cnc brake but I didnt want "aggressive" bends as this mod must have a flow and a unique minimalistic design. I am using a soft face hammer and sometimes a piece of wood for extra support during the bending.

First the HDD - DVD cage.

I forgot to take some finished pictures lolz you will see it later though :)
Next is the PSU holder.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%205/P5300020.jpg

This is the 120 radiator stand. I need a stand cause I wont attach anything on the top main part in order to remove it and have access on the hardware.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%205/P5300023.jpg

While I was trying to put together the bottom case I realized that the aluminum sides didnt fit right between the acrylic corners and I cant understand why as the 2d 3d designs seem ok! Anywayz I had to do a small redesign which I believe came out better than the original plan. I will cut a small part from the edges of the 2 panels (front - back side) and a bigger portion from the other 2, giving also the screw holes a different design.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%205/P5300025.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%205/P5300029.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%205/P5300031.jpg

I also rounded the edges for s smoother overall look. I used clamps to file them together to leave space for no mistakes.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%205/P5300034.jpg

Cutting the 2 panels a little more and also cutting the holes on their edge to give them an "open circle" design which it works the same as it was a plain circle.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%205/P5300035.jpg

Finished pictures you will see once I finish the bottom case.
I will use many spacers in this mod as all of the components in the bottom case they will be "hanged" from its roof. They will also hide the threads from the screws I am going to use.
I cut some just to make some tests and see how they look/fit. I am using an aluminum rod 10mm OD 8mm ID.
This is just some testing, I will add acrylic o-rings later and plastic anti vibration parts.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%205/P5310044.jpg

I also marked and drilled the acrylic corners in order to make some threads. Later on though I decided to use 3mm aluminum threads and embed them in the acrylic. It was the best way as the threads were quite small and easier to brake through time.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%205/P5310049.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%205/P6010051.jpg

I also countersunk the holes for the threads to sit flush. I added isopon 38 inside the hole and also on the top to keep the threads steady rock! :)

Love the folding brake and the PSU and HDD cage are looking real nice, hacksaws and files my favourite tools many people hate filing but i spend hours sawing and filing when i could probably do it quicker with a dremel or something but I can sit for hours shaping things, filing makes me feel like I'm really creating and carving something which I guess you are

Those acrylic corners look cool, just like blocks of ice, I'm still not sure how this build is going to look overall

I also work on the washing machine but I have a small worktop on it, luxury :D

Update no 6 guys and we move on!!

After I embedded the threads into the acrylic corners and fixed them with isopon, I sanded them
with 150 grit and finished with 300. More sanding and detailed work will follow prior to painting.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%206/P6020001.jpg

Then I used this dremel bit to clear carefully the threads from the isopon.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%206/P6020005.jpg

Finished!

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%206/P6020006.jpg

My first thought was to use countersunk screws in the front and back side but then I choose to do the same on all the sides. Cutting the screws in size. After I changed my mind I cut more countersunk screws for the other panels too.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%206/P6020007.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%206/P6020009.jpg

Countersinking the holes.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%206/P6020012.jpg

For the 2 other panels I couldnt use the countersink bit due to their different design so I had to file them.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%206/P6020014.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%206/P6020016.jpg

Attached all the side panels of the box. Front part will be the buttons and probably the fan controller but not sure yet, left panel is the dvd-hdd, right panel is the ssd along with their window and back side is the 80mm exhaust fan.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%206/P6020020.jpg

And here are the restart and power buttons. I am going to attach them later on 2 momentary switches.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%206/P6020022.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%206/P6020023.jpg

So, I also started my work on the top part which is going to take me a long time due to its difficulty. First I used a thin carton which I folded in two and bended it to use it as my guide for the fiberglass.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%206/P6020024.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%206/P6020026.jpg

I used two angles to keep the piece in a particular angle, not complete 90 degrees but close to that due to my design.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%206/P6030028.jpg

Preparing and applying the first layer of fiberglass.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%206/P6030029.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%206/P6030031.jpg

I also applied some fiberglass on the back side of the curve.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%206/P6030032.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%206/P6030033.jpg

Attached the top piece with cement glue in order to keep it steady for me to work with the fiberglass.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%206/P6030039.jpg

I took the piece inside my room to leave the fiberglass rest for 12 hours and then I did some more work on forming the top piece in the proper shape.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%206/P6040040.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%206/P6040041.jpg

Added the final cloth fiberglass and finished the main body. The amount of work in this particular piece is unbelievable as the flow that the design has its very difficult as it will have many curves which they must combine with each other flawlessly.

I want to say also that the countersunk screws you see on the box will be replaced as they cant fit as the aluminum is 2mm only. I will use some cap screws and feet on the bottom which they will support the corners too.

So Update no 7 its here guys!
I ve start working on the most difficult part of this mod which is going to take some time and that
is the main top part.
Here you will see the progress which is simple enough, yet very difficult in execution.
I am using fiberglass paste for the rough first fills and then Isopon 38 known as body filler for the finishing touches.

The design is really complex with many many curves and details. The angle of each curve its different (30 to 70 degrees) and I have to create a smooth curve to attach each and every one of them.

The progress requires sanding with grinding wheel, mouse sander, files and by hand.
After I finish sanding I add one more layer of isopon to cover any imperfections and holes and then sand again, then new spots are revealed so I repeat the process over and over again.

I estimate to finish this piece after 50 or 60 hours of work.

I will post the pictures without comments as I ve explained everything already! Enjoy.

OK, Now I get it! When you started covering the big piece of bent plexi in fibreglass I thought you were using the plexi as a plug and making a mould from it and my first thought was "How the hell are you going to get it out the mould" :?
Now I see the plexi is the base shape which you are working from, I don't think I have seen that done before but I can see that it enables the shape to have some very thin twisted areas where there is no fibreglass/filler just the plexi and some real depth and thickness where there is 8)
Looks like warm weather there, bet the filler goes off quick :D

Warm weather indeed my friend, basically we still didnt hit the 45 degrees Celsius but I hope it will delay some more!!! The corners of that part are also filled with fiberglass to ensure maximum durability and also to create the desired shape between the curves. Thanks for the comment my friend!!! some one who is new to fiberglass (newb): hey man have you ever worked with fiberglass
some one who is not a newb (OG): yes... why you ask
newb: well man i was just thinking about making something out of fiberglass and i was curious as to what is the most difficult part
OG: the sanding
newb: well i am sure you have to sand... but what about the fiberglass mixture ... how much hardener to resign should i use
OG: its on the package... but get a lot of sandpaper and a sander and a dremil
newb: what about the bondo mixture afterwards ... how do i know i mixed it right
OG: it hardens and you have to sand it... thats how you know you mixed it right
newb: is there any special technique to it
OG: yeah sand a lot
newb: no i mean the mixture
OG: dude your not ready for fiber glass

2 weeks later

newb: holy sanding batman... **** fiberglass my fore arms have been sore for days
og: Stupid newbs

seriously... though... the case looks AWESOME MAN... i am excited to see the colors on and it and the components in it...

enjoy the sanding man... and it looks great... i like the use of the file... i just used a dremil and alot of cuss words ... but the file can me more accurate

last time i worked with fiberglass and catfur(fiberglass paste) i was doing body work on cars... and that crap wasnt fun then and its not fun now hahahaha but... the finished product is usually pretty awesome... so keep on keeping on man... its looking great!!!

LoL that was the best comment ever my friend!! I ve never seen a comment big like this!
Indeed my friend, this job is extremely difficult and not for noobs for sure! Its going to take a lot of time and the details in this are very difficult! I am glad that you could capture the whole concept from now you have a good modding imagination!! :) The file is for removing bug chunks of material just to shape and form the curves etc. It works better that anything else!!! Thanks for the awesome comment my friend!!! :)

A big thanks to my sponsors for one more time, I will give 1000% to satisfy you with my work!

Now lets move to the hard part! The work (under the burning sun!) which seems will take for eva!!

I had to harmonize the top part with the aluminum box as the curves where a bit out !
So I masked the case and applied as much fiberglass was needed!

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%208/P6120001.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%208/P6130002.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%208/P6130003.jpg

Then I created a mold out of 1mm acrylic. I used that mold to create 2 "feet" kind off, which they will be used to screw the top part on the aluminum case. I ve been thinking for 2 weeks how I was going to attach those 2 pieces together and the most functional and cool looking way was that.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%208/P6130005.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%208/P6130006.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%208/P6130007.jpg

The next day I removed the aluminum case and the masking tape and here you see the excessive fiberglass which needs to be filed.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%208/P6150060.jpg

After a lot of filing and sanding!!!

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%208/P6150061.jpg

Here I cut some parts from the curvy part of the top in order to create later the "neurons" design which is going to serve as ventilation holes.
I also had to work on that side to finish it so I could move on to the next side. That included 5 layers of Isopon and a lot of sanding!!!!!

Just curious ... Is the case going to be cut on the one corner like the fiberglass box above it or is that one corner going to stick out...

Sorry for the question I'm just excited to see this thing built!

Good work man

One more update on the go for you guys!
I ve been working really hard these days in order to "almost" finish 2 sides of the top part out of 6 and I still have the ventilation neuron designs to do and finish!

Here are some shots of the front and curvy part finished. The curves are aligned in an unorthodox style yet are flowing among them really nice and in a unique style.
That wasnt an easy task at all as I am going to show you in the 3 final pictures.

First lets see these 2 finished parts.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%209/P6170008.jpg

Here is how I start to form the various shapes. I am using a filler which is really hard yet easy to work with and sand, I found the specific brand after years of using many other materials and brands.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%209/P6170009.jpg

And a little preview of the 3rd side's final steps to finish.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%209/P6170010.jpg

Here you are going to see the step I took in order to create these 2 sides of the top part.
The amount of work is ridiculous (and the materials used from the beginning to finish).

Update no 10 guys and the amount of work I did is unbelievable and I have a looooooot more to do yet!!!
I ve been working every day for an average of 6 straight hours, under a burning sun and I can tell you for sure that my arms are in real pain as the amount of filing and sanding is ridiculous!

Here is the finisher I use for the final touches. Also with this material I "build" some parts, like extending the curves, filling parts to harmonize the flow of the curves etc etc.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2010/P6190001.jpg

When I spot an imperfection on the organic shape, I immediately start filling the spot, let it dry and start sanding till I have the desired shape.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2010/P6200003-1.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2010/P6200008.jpg

Here you will see that I choose for my input output part of the case not to use the regular rectangular shape but instead I ve calculated the motherboard i/o shield placement, gpu and psu outputs in order to create something different and more modern looking.
At first I did some freehand drawings while I was calculating over and over again the right space and also I had to keep the flow on the case and to not disturb the overall design.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2010/P6200010.jpg

First big cuts were made by a grinding wheel and a steel cutting disk.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2010/P6200013.jpg

Then I used the sanding disk to remove big chunks of excessive material.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2010/P6200014.jpg

After a lot of filing and sanding I had to fix the imperfections and also shape the curve to fit flawlessly with the rest part.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2010/P6210015.jpg

After 2 days of total in work I managed to finish this part.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2010/P6210016.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2010/P6210017.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2010/P6210018.jpg

I kept working on the other sides and believe me it was really hard as I had to redo many of the curves as they wouldnt align perfectly with each other. I increased their length by adding more isopon and also shaped them in order to flaw with each other perfectly.

Here are some shots of the finished (for now) main top part.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2010/P6240033.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2010/P6240043.jpg

And here are some tease shots of the upcoming work on the creation of the "neuron" ventilation system. I choose to create them by adding 2 layers of handpicked fiberglass (no molds used or anything like this) and then cut the desired shapes. So that way it will be easier and more durable as the design has many thin lines.

Mmm, Sanding filler, great job my favourite, I would rather file metal than sand filler!
It's coming along good I'm really liking the overall shape, if you have problems with small holes, dents and marks you might want to use body stopper to fill them rather than use filler, as you know it's often wasteful trying to mix a very small amount of filler for a few small holes and often you just sand it away again and still have the holes.

Body stopper is a very fine paste and you can get it in one part so you don't have to mix it with hardener/catalyst and you can spread it very thin so you don't have to use much and there is very little waste, you use wet and dry paper to smooth it down, something like this stuff.

Nice job on it.

Also, I really hope you are not breathing all the dust or you'll never make it to the finish line on this thing. Didn't your daddy ever tell you.."make sure to wear protection"? :D

Update time guys! After 6 days of exhausting work I am here to present you the results so far.

The most difficult part of the case was the interior. None of the available tools could help me so I had to sand all of it by hand! I wanted to cover the fibarglass edges and create a very smooth surface. That required many many layers of body filler and extremely difficult sanding.

Here is the first layer of isopon and sanding.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2011/P6270001.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2011/P6270002.jpg

After a suggestion in the forums by a friend (thanks man) I created some Rondo! This is a mixture with isopon (body filler) with resin. That way you create a very smooth and more "liquid" material in order to apply it with a brush or just by pouring it and shake it around.

I used that technique to apply 6 layers (yeah I am crazy) of rondo in order to create a balanced and smooth surface and also add some thickness on the inside, to create a 3d effect on the neuron ventilation system as you are about to see later on this update.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2011/P6270003.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2011/P6270004.jpg

After 4 days of work I managed to finish the interior!!

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2011/P6300005.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2011/P6300006.jpg

After I finished the interior I start working on the front part of the ventilation system.
The process its the same, filling, sanding etc etc until I had a satisfying result.
I had to use the dremel too though as I couldnt work only by hand.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2011/P6300007.jpg

Second time sanding.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2011/P6300014.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2011/P6300015.jpg

As you can see I found a soft spot so more filling and sanding!!! OMG! That thing happened to me a gazillion times with this mod!!!

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2011/P6300016.jpg

So after more filling and sanding I finished those pieces.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2011/P6300017.jpg

As you see I ve worked my way with isopon in a way that the ventilation system has a really nice flaw with the rest of the case.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2011/P6300019.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2011/P6300020.jpg

Next step was drawing the design on the fiberglass. Due to the strange and unorthodox design of my vents I am using Zaha's design as a guide and I will create something similar yet with my own "artistic" touch too.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2011/P7010022.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2011/P7010026.jpg

I also finished the last vent.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2011/P7010027.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2011/P7010028.jpg

The following part drove my crazy!!! The discs on the dremel werent big enough to cut so I tried a thousand ways to cut the holes but eventually I managed to somehow route the holes by using a dremel bit for engraving. The proble was the depth of the vents as I wanted to have a 3d effect extending in the interior of the case.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2011/P7010029.jpg

And here are some shots after 4 hours of filing. This is not the final thing as I will come back later for the details.

Time for our new and.... maybe last update for some time as I have to move in a new house, if everything goes well!

I will not post comments on the pictures as you already know the drill (sanding, filling, filing etc etc)

I will only say that it took me 40 hours to come to that point and that I ve already primed it and I am working on minor fixes and details right now!
I also cut a hole for the tubing in a way that I will be able to remove the top without interfering with the tube.
I also did some changes on one vent and I will work with the acrylic in a way that it will cover the space.
The primer I am using its a filler primer which is the best for my job as it fills little holes and it works like a thin layer of bondo too!

Enjoy the show guys!!! :)

Is this one getting heavy? It looks like weighs a bit.

So guys here I am after a long period of time cause as most people know I moved to my new place! Wasnt an easy case for me as I had to move a lot of things and also I had to make the desks and tables by myself due to lack of money.
I am back and I will be away from this project for some time again, as I have to make a new mod in only one month, in order to show it on the latest Campus Party in Spain. Difficult task yet I have to work really hard to make it to the deadline.

I primed the top part before I moved to the new house with the filler primer and when I finished the new house I start sanding it, in order to fix any imperfections by adding isopon and more filler primer at the end.

I will not comment between the pictures as it is sanding, filling, primer and the repeat till the final 2 primer coats.

But first lets see what I got from the sponsors!
My thanks goes to MSI and Coolermaster!

I would like to dedicate this update and this mod to my friend Syrillian (http://www.overclock.net/overclock-net-related-news-information/969421-r-i-p-syrillian-formerly-donation.html) who passed out recently from cancer.
As I told before I will put this mod on hold once more as I am going to build a new one so I will see you over the new small worklog!

Thanks for reading my worklog guys, till the next update, peace! :)

So I am back after a long time (due to my trip to Spain and my new mod) and the first thing I did, was to experiment with various paints and techniques on the main part of the mod.
After a discussion I had with my friend and fellow modder voigts, we agreed that one single color on this big piece wouldnt look nice, especially the black color. So after a lot of experiments I conclude to that I had to use a kind of texture painting effect, as it looks like a modern "building". I aint going to comment between the pictures but you are going to see the process between the different stages of experimenting. I would love to hear your opinion and as always I will take notes and follow accordingly!

Also I cut some holes for the USB 3 and.... lets start with a "modded" snack! ;)

So....

The technique of this texture painting was using silver with black, 2 different brushes and also I created darker spots fading out to lighter ones as a "fake" lighting effect. It has a glossy surface which I am going to make it ever more glossy by adding acrylic varnish. If you like it though... ;)

Time for one more update guys! This is a very random update with some of the things I did during these days.

Lets begin with the GPU modification. As many of you might now, there isnt any full waterblock for the GTX 560 Ti or at least there wasnt till the day I was searching for one so I had to find a solution. I found a kit from Arctic Cooling but I didnt have money for the universal GPU block so... improvising time!!

First of all I disassembled the card by removing the heatsink and inspecting the card further.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2015/PB060004.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2015/PB060006.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2015/PB060007.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2015/PB060008.jpg

I also removed that heatsink in order to attach the Arctic Cooling ones but later I changed my mind as you will see in the process.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2015/PB060009.jpg

You will see that I decided to use the fins along with that original heatsink for 2 reasons. The first reason is that the fins that came with the package there were insufficient and also the size of them wasnt correct. The second reason is that by combining the fins with the heatsink I can hypothetically improve the cooling. So I attached the fins with an adhesive thermal paste.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2015/PB060010.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2015/PB060012.jpg

As I couldnt afford to buy a waterblock for the GPU (also no access to a cnc mill) I had to dig in my water cooling stuff to find a solution. The only compatible in a way block I could find was a Heatkiller CPU block which with some modification would fit just right! So I start measuring and marking the block.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2015/PB080030.jpg

One note to all of my modder friends out there! Working with stainless steel by hand its a PITA for sure!!! It took me 45 minutes to find a proper way to drill 4 holes!! I had to use a cone carbide drill bit after I did some reading on the webs. Also I used some reinforced discs on my dremel to do the cuts.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2015/PB080032.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2015/PB080033.jpg

I polished the copper too as it was really messy lolz!

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2015/PB080034.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2015/PB080037.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2015/PB080040.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2015/PB080041.jpg

That backplate came with the Arctic Cooling set.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2015/PB080043.jpg

And after this and that I finished my custom made waterblock and now the card is finished and ready for some tests (crossing fingers!)

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2015/PB080046.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2015/PB080051.jpg

Now some other things I did. USB holder modding in process...

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2015/PB070017.jpg

Spacers cut and filed after measuring the proper distance between the top part and the USB holder....

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2015/PB070022.jpg

Holes for the Bitspower's fan controller....

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2015/PB070024.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2015/PB070025.jpg

Clamped the face of the controller to make perfect holes the ghetto way!

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2015/PB070026.jpg

Finished!!!

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2015/PB070027.jpg

And finally the creation of the power and restart buttons. I cut 1 mm clear acrylic to glue it on the back of the buttons, sanded it, glued it, filled it and last I attached the part from the switch on them. And yes... I also painted them blue candy! I have to tell you that the combination of the colors will look awesome as I did some minor tests with the various items and colors to see how it look and I have to admit that it looks pretty nice!

Thanks buddy glad you liked it!!! :)

These days I am working really hard in order to finish the mod as I have some other things that I have to do and ... I dont like leaving unfinished jobs behind!
This will be a quick update as my time is very limited but you will get the "idea"!

So lets begin!

As you will see in this update, I did some mistakes on the designing of one of the aluminum parts and while I was trying to fix it by changing my original plans I was only making it worse.
The most of the pictures are my efforts that gone wasted...
First, the holes for the fan controller and the addition of threads on the face of it.

A real mess!!!! Only if you could see the rest of my house.... Here I start measuring for the i/o holes of most of the components and also marking the aluminum.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2016/PB110086.jpg

I also messed with the idea of the creation of a backplate for the mobo i/o shield. More on a following update.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2016/PB150106.jpg

And here is... my mistake. I placed the hole for the DVD rom in a wrong place so I decided to use a slim DVD in a different place. I was going to cover the old hole with an acrylic illuminated logo of the mod... Yeah I messed it up!

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2016/PB170120.jpg

And here we are!!! New pieces.... I decided to change these 3 not only the "faulty" one as I wanted to do some minor changes. Special thanks to my friend who works in the laser company for the quick delivery and not only!!

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2016/PB180123.jpg

And I finally got the acrylic parts!

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2016/PB180125.jpg

The cpu block was painted by using a new technique which is textured were the black color is only! Quite amazing huh? :p I thought I could use this technique as from far is distinctive and it blends quite nice with the rest of the "inside" theme!
It also has 3 layers of acrylic varnish which it gives it extra durability and also glossiness.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2016/PB210126.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2016/PB210139.jpg

These are the feet of the mod. Are composed by 6mm a grade black acrylic and 3mm blue fluorescent. I will add a white led in each one of them in order to give them a very smooth ambient light effect. The polish.... gosh it took me forever as the particular black acrylic is very hard as its a good quality one. These pictures are one step before the final.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2016/PB210141.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Project%20%20Synthetica/Update%2016/PB210144.jpg

And the reservoir stand painted a darker blue candy with a very small portion on the right edge treated with the same technique as the cpu. Not visible from far.
The reservoir was frosted except from a horizontal line of 1.5 cm.

This is looking so good. I've been feeling guilty about not having time to read through lots of the builds lately so I've been going through them today and making sure to comment. I'm reminded a bit by why it's a bad idea to do that. It gives me too many ideas! I can't be thiking about things to build. I have too much school work to do!

Build looks great. I can't wait to see more. You progress pics are awesome.

One more update for you guys is on the way!
Many things I did these days and I am a couple of steps (or more) before the finish line.

First of all is the creation of a "proper" slim dvd stand. The first one wasnt the best solution so I had to create something better. So I came up with that.....

A single piece of aluminum angle which I used to create a housing for the slim dvd.

Holes for cathode and led switches..... done!

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Update%2017/PB240030.jpg

Various steps of the top acrylic polishing process. 180-230-320-400-600 and polishing buffer wheel at the end.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Update%2017/PB300071.jpg

Led stands were made out of 3mm acrylic and 1mm cnc precut pieces. I gave them the shape accordingly of their placement in the case.

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Update%2017/PB260039.jpg

Pieces filed and sanded.

Glued together with plastic welder epoxy.

Filing, sanding and final fixes with some isopon. And ready for painting!

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Update%2017/PB280047.jpg

Here is also the gpu stand after the addition of aluminum putty. I filed it into the desired shape and its ready for some painting too!

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Update%2017/PB280044.jpg

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Update%2017/PB280045.jpg

I used black hammered paint for those parts as it naturally gives a thick and textured surface and its durable as ****!!

http://i647.photobucket.com/albums/uu191/chinoangel/Update%2017/PB290062.jpg

I also finished the corners of the bottom case. I used black hammered paint here too for the reasons explained above even though it wont be visible I wanted that textured-durable touch inside the bottom case too.
I let the visible part unpainted in order to apply some carbon Di Noc vinyl I had available.

With this and that here we are guys at the final update of this year and of this mod!!! I wont say much as is nothing left to say but I will let you know that THIS was one of the most difficult builds I ever did after Totechnika! The pump refused to start so I had to dismantle it and fix it, the watercooling loop took me 11 hours to get it right due to tight space and the lack of the proper fittings even though Bitspower gave me more than enough to use, the cable management was a nightmare as I had to create and mod each and every cable so.... ok thats all!!!

First some random pictures of some of the soooooo many things I did these days. I wont show more pictures as I said before is pointless to show me holding a screwdriver and attaching a motherboard. One of the many custom cables and some steps of the final assembly.

I used 2 kind of sleeving in this mod. At the left side is the MDPC one and at the right is a sleeving a friend of mine has send to me from USA. The quality of this sleeving and its density is 10 times better than anything else I ve seen and used so far (sorry MDPC fans) but is quite difficult to work with so this is meant to be for pro modders with lots of experience and patience.

Here are some "artistic" kind of pictures with the sleeving my friend send me from USA. I took these pictures for him and I thought it will be nice to share them with you just to see that I can also take some "nice" shots with my cheap camera but I prefer to stay "true" and while I mod on my bed or kitchen table or in the backyard I will always take shots from there and as bad as it might look, this is were I mod. I have nothing against nice photography I really love it but for me its impossible as the kind of work I do cant be placed under black velvet sheet for some shots! ;)

And now the final shots of Project : Synthetica! I used various lighting positions with my very cheap equipment but I believe I managed to take some nice shots after all lolz :)
I also did some changes on the mod:

1) The paint on the ventilation holes is changed after some request I had in more soft granite looking color.
2) The Gpu stand was made again from scratch in a more professional way and now it works also as a clip cause you can position the Gpu and then turn the stand inside towards the card and it will hold in place but I also used 2 screws for maximum durability.
3)I used in every component that vibrates (sounds kinky lol ) antivibration rubber mounts and all that effort I can say it worked more than I could believe and the PC is barely audible even with all these holes!

Also I had difficulties capturing the night shots as the lighting was made in a way to be ambient, not strong and distracting as I wanted a smooth effect. I couldnt calculate if that lighting would have been easy to be captured by the camera so the shots was the best thing I could do. The effect of all these ventilation holes is phenomenal as the lighting spreads in every corner of the room creating shapes that look awesome. Unfortunately though after all these efforts it was impossible to take shots....

So now please enjoy the final shots of Project: Synthetica!!!
