GFX 8800GTX ~$45?
EVGA 790i mobo -
Socket 775 proc, im assuming a quad core with the amount that he spent on a cooler.
I figure i'll keep the case and HDD, and part it out... what do you guys think?

Sounds like a good deal. Did they have it up and running? Make sure it's working fine before you get sucked into a potentially bad situation.
This makes me want to check my local pawn shops...they're everywhere around here.

Why the hate on the 775?
I am still running a 775 gaming rig but really only need a new video card... (I do most of my gaming on my laptop TBH).
Good find though, IF it works.

oh i intend to give it a full rundown before i buy it... i feel like its either been sitting there for a long time, or that pawn shop needs to hire me asap, because the computer guy there is missing a few screws.

if it's really that good, then that cpu cooler might be worth keeping for the future :P
Either way, I wish pawnshops here had cool stuff like that

No, I was just feeling pissy and thought the rig was a good spec except for some recent game playing...
TBH, my 775 rig is sitting in a new chassis waiting for some loving, not having been powered on for months... (sig rig)

Light some candles, dim the lights, put on some barry white, and get busy...gaming.
Check local thrift stores, too.
All of them.
While they (usually) only carry 10-year-old-plus parts, you can get some SWEET cases and parts!
I found ModCron there. Begged for me to buy him.
And at only $20 for a not bad (except for ME  ) machine, a very nice SBLive, it was an offer too good to pass up.
I would say definitely jump on that system. Just the case itself is worth at least half the price.

Check local thrift stores, too.
All of them.
I've found a 85$ Cable modem at a thrift store for...... get this..
5$ still in the box with the cables driver CD and everything.
Also found a rockford fosagate 250W Punch DX amp for 9.95$ before (just needed the fuse replaced)
Thrift stores are great places for random electronic finds. and generally they don't know what the f@#k they have, they just know old electronics are cheap so they put 5~20$ on the price tag. some days most thrift stores have 75% or so off to.

Install Win7 and you could have a nice build on your hands there.

i think win 7 is on it, i just need to pull the licence key, although for all i know it may well be pirated...
I think MS has a tool to figure that out....couldn't tell you where it is (Google should know :P ) but I swear I remember seeing it bugging me to check mine at one point several years ago.

I have several tools for that.

I meant if it's a valid key unique to that machine.

Magical Jelly Bean Key Finder is your friend :D
Or, if you want something that'll work on Windows 7 without paying moneys, NirSoft ProduKey:

I'm sure there are plenty others floating around the internets too. Heck, I almost wrote my own for work once...ended up just packing ProduKey though...it achieved the desired result... :whistler:

I've never tried to use it on 7 lol so I didn't know that - I know it works fine on the stuff I normally have to dig up, specifically XP Vista and Office

at thrift stores, i got some dvi cables for a buck ea, not to mention a micro usb car charge 12v for my car for my phone... for 50 cents.
Speaking of thrift stores and not knowing what they have.... :whistler:
I once saw an iMac G3. $75. Tray-load. No mobo tray, mobo, HDD, ODD, etc. Essentially, you were paying $75 for a fancy, proprietary monitor.
What is it with people and thinking Apple computers of any kind or age are automatically more powerful than i7s?

I haven't paid for a phone charger in years... not since my ex wife started working at a hotel forever ago. I just go to a hotel and ask to see their lost and found phone charger selection. You'd be amazed at what gets left. :D
oh and yeah, see if it boots. :D

I stopped by today, and looked at the computer again. It appears to have a hyper threaded p4 for a processor... in a socket 775 evga 790i mobo with DDR3 ram... is that possible? or did the properites tab lie to me?.. either way im going for it, they threw in a free 1080p monitor, and i'm bringing it home tomorrow.

No reason why you can't combine a P4 with DDR3 memory, but it'll be limited to the speed of the FSB ofc.
Yup, that's entirely possible. The S775 platform still had the RAM controller on the NB (i-series platforms moved the RAM controller to the CPU), so no reason why you couldn't do that.....why you would want to is beyond me, but hey, whatever. :P Just means it's that much better a deal for you because with that P4 the performance probably sucks.
