View Full Version : K3n
Hi TBCS community!
As I'm new in here, let me introduce my self a bit. I'm Peter aka Gtek, I'm 28 from slovakia, living in scotlant currently.
You can find my previous projects on my personal webpage:
http://www.gtek-computerdesign.com/projects.html
K3N started with a basic idea of something completely different from a traditional case. A stand alone system with a unique design. So after a few sleepless nights and a lot of sketching, I settled with what you can see from picks. It will be 1 meter tall 18cm wide and 12 cm deep and it will house a miniITX system with mid range GPU (GTX 460?) and it will be water cooled .
The shell will optically consist of 6 segments 5 aluminium (1.5mm thick) and one perspex (dark tint) and the main frame will mainly be a mix of 6mm and 2mm aluminium.
As I started this project a while ago, I will put all the progress in photos, so you're up to date.
comments, questions... all welcomed :)

I'm working on K3N's main frame just now. Centre parts ale held together by side bits using M3 countersunk screws...

So I have no idea how you got your edges you cut so smooth but it looks very very nice.
Those side parts were cut out of 2mm aluminium...

And this is how the main frame looked last night

Looks like a neat idea...and that is some really thick aluminum...nice! :D

Your last two builds (beta, cubo) have been exquisite. I'm really looking forwards to this one!

That's some nice filing, I'm impressed you got that fan hole to look so perfectly round and smooth by using the drill and jigsaw method.

Thanks guys!
Oh, Hi John, thank you!
I started to work on hdd+optical compartment. Well, really just started as I made just one bit  cut out with hand saw out of 6mm scrap aluminium, filed, drilled and taped for M3 countersunk screws...

Thank you!
Unfortunately, I'm very busy at work again... actually so busy that I take it home :D, so just a quick update on how the project advanced since. (not much :P)

This mod is art. Keep it up man.
Hi guys, I'm back with a small update... basically I'm forming the outer shell just now, cutting and putting all the bits together. It looks kind of messy atm with all the screws and scratches and rough edges, but that will be all fixed. All the bolts and small gaps covered with body filler, sanded down, primed, painted, etc...

how are you curving that aluminum so well?
Thanks!
how are you curving that aluminum so well?
I'm not :) It's 2mm alu, so it just follows the curve of the side part, with not much force needed.
So... After a while :whistler: (a month and a half) another update.
I'm working on the surface finish just now, by covering all the screw and imperfections with body filler, sanding it down, spraying with primer and the whole process again, until it looks ok.

http://img818.imageshack.us/img818/845/step5z.jpg
http://img46.imageshack.us/img46/8905/step6y.jpg
as you can see from the last pic, there still is a dent in top corner of this part, so I'll have to do that bit again. I will also show whole case after this process, which should be sometimes within this decade
