FINALLY getting my new computer together, and I decided upon a basic case mod for my new CM Centurion 5 case. I am going to cut a window out, and a black and white paint theme with some blue accents to match the MOBO. I plan on doing something with the front of the case as well, that is still in the idea phase though, so more to come on that.
Anyway... on to the undressing of the case:

gonna go great with my i7-960. I have the Cool-IT Vantage I won to cool the CPU. I just need to get a SSD for the system.
one more coat of primer is going to be needed to fix the mistakes I made with the first two coats lol, and then on to the black and white paint job.
the top and side panels need to be sanded and primed as well, but I am going to cut out the side window first. More to come soon!

Got the priming done, just gotta sand and lay on the first coats. I hope I can get the paint job I have in my head done on the inside of the case. gonna be hard to get it just right, but will look awesome if it works out!
Too bad it is waaay to windy to paint today :(

Thanks for the support man! your mods are awesome and I may just take you up on the offer for advice! I haven't had time to get anything done on this just yet, but I do have a few days off next week and hope to get at least the base coat on the guts of the case done. I would also like to get the window cut in the side panel as well.

Cutting out cable management on the motherboard tray. probably should have done this before priming the case, oh well I needed to do a coat or two more anyway.

Filing half done, I forgot to take a shot of it all filed will do that next update :P

Did a bit more work on this, unfortunately I didn't get much done on said warranty voiding above lol so that will have to wait.
anyways, lets get to it!

With a lot of filing left to do.

I'll be watching..
Looks like a great start.
Just keep the 3 yr. old away from it when there's fresh paint on it. Kids have a way of touching fresh paint, walking in fresh concrete, and sticking stuff into electrical outlets. Or... maybe that was just me.

Did some more work on this but didn't take pictures lol. Just finished cutting and filing cable management holes and re-primered the main guts of the case with high build primer. I couldn't believe how much thicker it goes on than regular primer lol. should have bought that first and saved myself some money! Oh well, the more you know right? Lol

So while stress-testing an overclock my PSU decided to die. NOT cool.
http://img7.imageshack.us/img7/2410/img1687x.jpg
The culprit capacitor. Gonna try and switch it out for a good one.
http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/57/img1690x.jpg
gonna have to desolder this, as I cannot for the life of me get these plugs out of the back of the PSU. Anyone have any tips? lol
http://img854.imageshack.us/img854/2144/img1691ir.jpg
The shiny part in the corner is the liquid the capacitor pooped out.
http://img19.imageshack.us/img19/8547/img1693jm.jpg
also, there was a dead fly in the bottom of the PSU case. Culprit of the cap blowing? perhaps.
More to come of the inevitable fixing. Also I am going to try to work on the paint tomorrow morning. :)

I de-soldered my power connector and switch on the ones I've done. It's either that or cut the case apart

Yeah, I am planning on desoldering it. I cannot for the life of me find my desoldering braid though. :P

I haven't gotten any work on this because every day off I have had it RAINS. grrr. This paint needs to get finished already! lol

Looks great so far. Are you going to cut out your own acrylic for the window or do you have a kit that will fit?

Is this a good replacement?

yeah, that should do as a replacement.
unfortunately, it looks like you pulled the plating out of the through hole in the circuit board. you can see it stuck to the left leg of the cap in your picture. that means you no longer have a connection from the top layer to the bottom layer of the circuit board for the power supply. so i'm guessing that even if you replace the cap, the power supply probably won't work unless you add some jumper wires to go from the leg on teh cap to where ever the original traces went to.

Looking at the capacitor, yes it looks like I have some copper on the lead still stuck to it. I thought I had all the solder off, apparently not :( I am a n00b when it comes to electronics, lol I am learning though.
I will see if I can rig something up to where this thing still works, I think I might just order a new PSU when funds aren't quite so tight.
(Have to buy a new car, and fund another Vegas trip!)

don't feel bad. desoldering is way more difficult than soldering. even someone like me that has been doing it for almost 30 years still damages boards like that from time to time. although usually it's on old dead boards that i am cannibalizing for parts so it usually doesn't matter.

Just bought a 80 dollar cheapass 700w rosewill PSU for 30 bucks... hopefully that will tide me over until I can get my Kingwin up and running again. I also got an Antec Sonata case (free) to temporarily house my PC until this mod is done. Can't beat it!
The case is nice, but won't be as nice as my mod (so I keep telling myself, lol) once it is done.

Cocked and locked on!
Unfortunately, I'm fresh out of tomatoes.
Would paintballs and CO2 suffice????
*Great, now I've got the urge to make a paintball effect on a case.....

actually you are one of the few within driving distance of me who could go through with the threat! haha. And yes, now you should go shoot paintballs at a case. Take videos and lots of pics!

They're press tabs on the top and bottom, just use some channel locks to push the tabs down and it'll slip out the front (towards the outside face) might have to peel off that hotglue first though!
you can see them in that picture.

Thanks for the tip on the channel locks, I bet you that will work! I tried pliers but I needed an extra hand. +rep. Got a little bit done today, pictures to come forthwith.

AAAnnd... my laptop is having issues and I can't find my USB card reader so, no picture update. I got coat of paint on the side panels, it snowed here this week though so I don't know how I am going to finish the painting lol.
Anyone have any good recommendations for a white or black fan for a push/pull config on a rad? 120mm.

skinny enough for dual mounting and silent'ish with decent cfm performance white center.
Terrible pressure rating though, but you'll get that with any "silent" fan... cause you can't create pressure, w/o making some noise.
If you don't care about noise like me, then i can point you to some fans that run at ludicrousness speed, Might be loud but i guarantee you'll see some astoundingly low temperatures. (124cfm @ 3.38mm h/2o... the above fan puts out 47cfm @ .95mm h/2o)

I was hoping that the weather would stay nice so I could FINALLY finish the paint on this bad boy... and... it snowed 3 inches today and is still snowing. It was warm enough a few of the days this week that I could have painted in my parents' garage with the heater on... but no... lol
I WILL FINISH THIS PROJECT! lol I promise.

I have a few ideas that I am kicking around. I think once I get the pain-in-the-a** paint done, I will have a better idea what to name it. I think I may have been a little bit ambitious for a novice painter on my paint idea. Oh well, if it turns out badly, I can always sand it down and start over, right?
Anyway, the weather was actually really nice on Saturday and Sunday, (of course it rained on my days off) so I think I am going to be able to get some paint laid down on this bad boy soon! I did a bit more sanding on the main frame, but it was boring so I didn't take any pictures. :P
