Laptop inverter freaking out -- URGENT

My screen is freaking out.

I turn it on, it lights up for a second, then there is buzzing, followed by no backlight on.
Display itself works fine, but without the inverter, I can't see anything.

What would be the safest-cheapest route.

ok so when you are just running battery... the screen doesn't work? but when you plug it in it does? sounds like a bad battery to me.
