Actually, i was rather stupid first time and forgot about the jumper cap. Make sure it's set to CABLE SELECT and not master/slave cos if you hardwire it to master and plug it into a slave port, then your computer won't be able to see it. There will most likely be some pins between the Molex plug and the IDE plug, and there should be a little diagram on the top teling you which pins make cable select.
If you're sharing the IDE ribbon with another drive make sure that's set to Cable Select as well.
I should have remembered that the first time...hope that helps you fix it!

On the back of your drive, there is a small series of pins with a little piece of plastic, called a jumper.
http://www.mysuperpc.com/build/sata_hard_drive_connectors_jumpers_3.jpg
The jumper, which bridges two pins together in a mechanical electrical connection, like a bridge, can tell your computer how to treat the drive. On the drive itself it should have a diagram which tells you which jumper placement means what - one should be master, one should be slave, and one should be entitled "Cable Select".
Check your jumper to make sure that it is, in fact, set to Cable Select. If it is not, you will have to move it. Using a very thin pair of needlenose pliers, or a similar tool, pull the jumper off by squeezing it gently and pulling it straight off. Don't drop it, because it is very small and easy to lose. Push it gently back over the pins that correspond with the Cable Select setting, put it back together again, and cross your fingers. Nine times out of ten this will fix your problem. If it does not, let us know and we'll keep guessing. :D

Personally I've never used cable select. I prefer to use master or slave. Dave, I'm not sure what you mean by a slave port, do you mean the slave connector on the ribbon cable?
If you don't use cable select then it doesn't matter which way round you connect the drives.
I think we need to know what other drives are on what cables in the system before making any more suggestions.
So, to the OP, when you say it doesn't work, what do you mean. Is it recognised in the BIOS? Have you tried a different cable? Maybe you damaged yours when you removed your own DVD first time.

How did you break the jumper?
And when i said 'other drives' i meant including hard disks.
Did you try purtting it back in your sister's machine to test it there?

Don't take this the wrong way, but if you broke the jumper, you must be being pretty rough with the drives. It's most likely not possible to repair the drives, but i'd find it suspicious if both drives were actually broken from being moved from one computer to another.
Your PSU won't selectively wreck your DVD burner, if there's a problem with your PSU, you'll know all about it; pretty much because everything would be wrecked.
I woudn't waste your money on a new drive quite yet; if you can get pictures, then there's a decent chance we cn still help you out. I assume you still have access to some computer because you're posting here. ;)
