I'm looking at 2 netbooks, Thinkpad x120e (e350 version) and the pavilion dm1 (also e350). Which would you guys go with?

My reasons so far are:

Small and thin, but with good resolution (1366*768)
Decent graphics performance (can play back 720p and some very light gaming)
Not too expensive, I have about a $600 budget.
Good battery life.

I'm open to other ultralights too, but this is complimenting my desktop, not being used as a powerhouse machine. we're talking video/music/websurfing/ms office/low power use overnight downloading. kind of stuff here.

my mother wants a netbook and i have recommended to her the pavilion dm1.

the reasons being that it has the e350 apu and an 11" screen rather than the usual 10" screens. that and i have always owned hp laptops and not a single one has ever given me a problem. the ibm probably is quite reliable as well but more costly i think. also having dealt with a couple ibm thinkpads here at work, i was left less than impressed.

Which models, ooc? As with any manufacturer, they've had their weak moments. So has HP, point of fact. Also, btw, Thinkpads have been Lenovo for the last ~6 years.

In terms of performance the x120e and the dm1z are probably identical. Their screens are the same size and resolution (11.6" 1366x768 ). The prices are similar. They have similar available ports (VGA, HDMI, USB). The dm1z weighs ~0.5lb more than the x120e, but looks like it has a bit better battery life (6:37 vs 6:05 in laptopmag's reviews). As far as build quality, from what I've seen of recent HP laptops I'm guessing they'll be similar (ie, both quite good).

Really, what it comes down to is personal preference. For example; the dm1z has a glossy screen while the x120e has a matte screen. The x120e has a touchpad and a trackpoint, but the dm1z only has a touchpad. Personally, I would go with the x120e (and actually, I've been considering selling my x200 and doing just that), but like I said, it really comes down to personal preference. What would be ideal is if there were some brick and mortar store you could go to and try them both out.

Here's reviews of both models:

x120e (http://www.laptopmag.com/review/laptops/lenovo-thinkpad-x120e.aspx)

/\ That, I think. The AMD Fusion things coming out are filling a nice niche between netbooks and subnotebooks both in capability and price. Powerful enough for 90% of what 90% of people do with a laptop, but small, quiet, cool, and low-power-consumption.

actually... I just thought of something else... My main reason for picking the x120e is the slim form factor... anyone have recomendations for anything else in the $600 range for ultraportables? The hd playback is still a requirement, but other than that go nuts guys, i'd like to stay at 1.2 inches or less, and a 14" screen is probably my max, I've got a few days till the check arrives in the mail, so keep the ideas coming please! (not tied to the 350, it was just a nice option for the hardware)

Lets say max of $700, as thats as much as i'm willing to spend.

Edit:

ZOMG PRETTY

Something along the lines of that guy would be good too

Heheh, yeah, the U200 series is quite sleek. :D Almost double the price though...and with the hardware in there, that's definitely in subnotebook territory.
