Carbon fibre clockwork bird? HELLS YEAH! :D That is pretty awesome. Pretty low power consumption too. ...can anyone say bird spy drones? ;) (Yes, yes, I know, we've had them for a while...)

Thanks for the link. For those who are interested, Festo has a making-of video on their website that explains a lot of what they needed to overcome and how they did it. It's a bit long but well worth the look.

looks like the battery was dying after a few minute flight, but i had the video muted so i couldn't really hear what he was saying about the bird.

He said it consumed about 25W during takeoff/etc, ~18W while cruising. For something that big, that's pretty good, compared to prop-planes. They probably just put a very small battery in it to conserve weight. Though, ooc, what was it that made you think the battery was dying? I didn't get that impression at all.

I'm really trying to figure out what I'm supposed to be impressed by. There are lots of RC ornithopters out there, like . . . lots. This one has a few different features and design solutions that are interesting, but nothing that seems leaps and bounds above or beyond what's already existed for a long time.

it was starting to flap slower at the end of it's flight, but then again it could of been the guy just going in for a landing since it doesn't appear like that wants to glide for any amount of distance.

Now....Why not cover it in flexible solar panels and ditch the battery all together?

Yeah! This one can't even fly unnoticed into a 10th story window, perch unseen on the wall in a corner, stream or record video/audio, and escape back out the window after the mission is complete! This company will get there though. This could be an old video too...I'm too lazy to check right now.
