I've got a easy 2,500$ computer custom built for gaming.

Ya i play video games about 2 hours a week?

(feels a great disturbance in the force,as if thousands of teenage gamers cried out at once)

Besides everyone is addicted to something. It might be video games, It might be crack cocaine, It might be gardening or it might be shopping it might be working or it might be facebook. and every person melds there lifestyle around there addiction no matter what it may be. because that is how we work as a species.

humans are naturally addictive animals.

They definitely can be. There's a reason WoW got the nickname "warcrack"..

Realistically I think it depends on the person. I go through phases where I play the game a TON then just stop playing and lose interest. Video games in general are a big hobby of mine, so I do play a lot. I've been a gamer since my pre-teens and I'm 26 now. My collection of games, systems, etc is probably easily into the thousands on what I've spent over the years. But what person doesn't have a hobby they've put money into over time?

I deal with people every day who build $2000 systems for gaming alone. Most of the time it's for a specific upcoming game, like MW3 or Old Republic

No video games are addictive. Nor is the internet, facebook, food, nicotine, caffeine, etc, etc. Dopamine is addictive. It controls feelings of pleasure and motivation amongst other things. People want to feel 'good'. How they go about getting the dopamine released may differ greatly. Nicotine (and harder drugs), alcohol, food, sex and gambling are pretty popular. Video games fit in there for some people.
I've definitely seen videos on youtube of people reacting ridiculously when their gaming session is interrupted... I've played many games, including WoW, without any hint of addiction. It really depends on personality and brain chemistry. Perhaps I'm just not as responsive to dopamine as some others are or maybe I don't produce as much...therefore I'm not as easily hooked on 'addictive' substances or actions.

Welcome to TBCS by the way!

For me, i get sucked in for an hour or 2 usually, then go do something else, There are exceptions however. When i first played through dragon age origins I would sit and play for 8 hours straight, only stopping for sleep, work, and food..

You know that can be highly dangerous.

Deep vein thrmobsis aka DVT or a blood clot!

it's especially bad in older adults, obese individuals, people with high blood pressure and some other contributing factors i don't know about.

Don't ever let your legs "Fall asleep" while playing video games, if you feel pins and needles or a tingling sensation, you probably need to get up and move your legs around for awhile before going back to kicking dragons asses.

last person i heard about died in May 2011 at the age of 20 from it.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-south-yorkshire-14350216

but man google yeilds page after page of deaths assossiated with gaming and DVT

scurry scurry stuff!

No. Didn't you see the WoW episode of South Park? ...like that.

Yes, mother...
That translates directly to 'You'll put an eye out!'
He stopped for sleep, work and food, it's fine.
I've unfortunately lost track of time when gaming only to find a similar amount of my life had disappeared. If the outside world doesn't interrupt me then sometimes I get lost.

OoooOO I've been sitting there playing garrysmod and felt one of my legs go asleep, when it wouldn't stop it gave me the heebie jeebies so i got up and walked around for about 20 minutes.

But garrysmod is the kind of game you can play for 10 hours straight and not even notice time pass by.

Here's something for your research, and of course it's just my opinion:

I don't believe the games themselves are addictive. I believe that the idea of being able to live another life, be it dangerous, intriguing, or in some cases, boring, is what is addictive.

Games themselves are really an extension of reality, looking to take you from your dull life, to a more exciting one. I play games, and certain games have chewed up my life for sure. It was never about making it to the next level, it was about keeping my head buried from the world around me.

In real life most of us aren't gun-toting, magic wielding, face-smashing heroes. We're regular joes, with dull boring jobs, and possibly a horrible home-life. Games are a way to escape that, and be who we want to be in our own minds. That is the root cause of game addiction.
