Hi everyone,

I was just wondering if you could suggest any of your favorite movies. I have nearly exhausted Netflix and I know there are many great films that are less heard of that I have not seen. So if you know of a diamond in the ruff, do pass it on please.

I think he's going for more obscure movies. Exhausting netflix isn't really possible.

What kind of movies? I'm a pretty big movie nerd. I have a collection of about 900 films and have watched them all at least once.

"dogtown and the z boys" and "the fog of war" are a few of my favorites

I can't find it on Netflix, which means it may not be on DVD, but I loved La Haine (http://imdb.com/title/tt0113247/) (or "Hate" as it is sometimes sold as in the US)

Smoke (http://www.netflix.com/MovieDisplay?movieid=60026334&trkid=189530&strkid=72287311_1_0) with Harvey Keitel is a good movie, great storyline, but no action or anything. A little slow, but is like watching a good book, if you know what I mean.

If you like movies that are a bit disturbing and will really mess with your head (not in the trippy way, but in the "Jesus, these people are messed up" way, like "Kids", or "Gummo") then Happiness (http://www.netflix.com/MovieDisplay?movieid=11819494&trkid=189530&strkid=820261092_0_0) is a great one. Word of warning - not for kids, and when I first watched this movie, I hated it. Violently. As in I hated the film-maker for even creating this movie, it was so disturbing. After I knew what I was in for, I watched it again and loved it, but it's a tough one to get through the first time. John Lovitz' performance in the opening scene is priceless, though.

Welcome to the Doll House (http://www.netflix.com/MovieDisplay?movieid=1110494&trkid=189530&strkid=1894609133_0_0) is another great one. Very awkward early-teenage girl named Dawn Weiner tries too hard to fit in. Sort of disturbingly honest, but brutally funny.

If you like dumb, South Park-esque comedy and are not easily offended, Orgazmo (http://www.netflix.com/MovieDisplay?trkid=73&movieid=70024220) is absolutely hilarious, but pretty poorly made. It was Trey Parker's (co-creator of South Park) first quality movie. If you enjoy poorly-made movies and Trey Parker, check out his very first movie, Cannibal! The Musical (http://www.netflix.com/MovieDisplay?movieid=14606642&trkid=189530&strkid=1621516454_0_0). Warning, this one is really, really bad, in a funny way. If you like Troma movies, this is a great one.

If you can't tell, I enjoy wierd and independent films, and am really hard to offend. Take a look, if you like any of those movies, let me know and I can probably dig up a dozen more you might like.

Has any one seen "Primer (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0390384/)". Its pretty wild. The movie was made for $7000, but the story is very interesting.

Thanks for all the suggestions, and yes, I am looking for more obscure. I have seen some of the above titles, and will definately check out the others. Thanks everybody! BTW, loved Band of Brothers, and Orgazmo was a side splitter! I am not easily offended.

I'm not sure what you'd consider obscure nor what genres you like to watch so bear that in mind.

Akira: A milestone anime film
Brazil: An Orwellian nightmare by Terri Gilliam (Monty Python fame)
The 7 samurai: a classic B&W that holywood ripped off many times
My dinner with Andre: a 2 hour conversation about life
Spirited away: another great anime film (has lots of cultural refernces you might not be familiar with)
The gods must be crazy:
Rio Lobo: a John Wayne Classic it has my favorite movie line.
Smiley's People: (1982) great cold war spy story
Vampire hunter D:
fried green tomatoes:
Shaun of the dead: get milk, call mum, avoid zombies.
Wizards:
Heavy metal:
Arabian Knight:
Thunderheart:
Attack of the killer tomatoes:

Stuff from TV:
Anne of Green Gables/Avonlea: (8 hour mini series)
Cadfael mystreies: 12th century monk solves murder mysteries
Rumpole of the Bailey: a curmungeony barister and "she who must be obeyed"

I just wanted to say that I have checked out all of the movies suggested in this thread and there were some real jems here! Thanks so much for the ideas. Anymore obscure/semiobscure flicks worth checking out, or any favorites that I may not have heard of? Particular interests are documentaries, horror, action. Thanks for the help gang! You the best!

A few of my favorites include "Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels" and "Snatch." They have similar styles, and both are rather impressive in my opinion. Theres even a few actors that play roles in both movies.

Particular interests are documentariesWhat about based on true stories?
A Beautiful mind (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0268978/)
The true story of John Nash, Nobel Prize winning mathematician. If you haven't seen it, and intend to, don't read any reviews or they may spoil it for you...

When I saw it I hadn't even heard of John Nash. Sometimes ignorance is better. Imagine seeing Titanic and not knowing in advance that she was going to sink?

I enjoyed the Blair Witch Project too, for the same reason.

A nice twist on a thriller is Momento.
The hero of the movie can't remember anything for more than 10 minutes. Its played backwards so its a challenge to watch and follow.

Watch The Atomic Cafe for a perspective on the cold war.

Refer Madness is a also a hoot. It was a seriuos cautionary tale at the time.

Henry V (with Kenneth Branagh) is a nice adaptation of a Shakespear history drama. lots of blood and mud

if you're looking for obscure horror just goto IMBD.COM and lokk up Vincent Price or Christopher Lee.

They were both written and directed by Guy Ritchie. Both are indeed great movies.

Looking at my Movie shelf.. I came up with a few others I have enjoyed.

The Girl Next Door (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0265208/) .. for some reason I can watch that one over and over. :D
Fantastic Voyage (http://http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0060397/) and Forbidden Planet (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0049223/) are 2 great SciFi oldies.
AntiTrust (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0218817/) and Swordfish (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0244244/) are a couple of decent hacker style movies that haven't been mentioned. Speaking of hackers, Takedown (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0159784/) is about how the FBI caught infamous hacker Kevin Mitnick with the help of Tsutomu Shimomura.
And one of the funniest movies I have seen in a while is Lone Star State of Mind (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0269483/). Its definately one to check out.

I loved it, I agree with you totally about Jon Lovitz's performance (golden break up scene). I was actually really impressed with the story, of course the subject matter is one of emotional heaviness, but life is emotionally heavy and for some people this is their reality. In my line of work, you hear the most chilling stories imaginable, people will tell their doctors things they won't even tell their spouse or police, so I guess I am a little more immune to the shock effect. But the blunt honesty that the father showed toward his son was quite original for screenplay. Very impressive work, thanks for the suggestion!

glad to hear. I've had a number of people feel the same way, but a few just got angry with me for even suggesting it.

It's been my experience that many people are "offended" by material like this due entirely out of their strong objection to the behavior being portayed, forgetting altogether that for one, this is only a story and not pornagraphy (i.e. filming of actual acts), and two being this movie is not at all condoning rape. The film is showing the effects on one's life whom suffers from an addiction to sex (in this case, illegal sex). But I think more people should see things like this with an open mind to see inside the mind of an addict and to also come to grips with the fact that these things are a part of human reality, unfortunately it happens all the time. I though the film was a brave insight into a man's world who clearly loathes his addiction (his frustration is plainly explained by his fantasy of walking through the park with assult rifle) and is deeply ashamed of his behavior, and none the less seems powerless to control it.
