I've been looking at some of your computer specs above your posts and boy do I feel bad for some of you. I think I'm going to give away a PC to whomever I think is the neediest of something new
Maybe two
Satan Claus is coming to town :santa:
I win!
Naw, let's have this be fair.
(Seriously, though, TGS, if I do win, just send me a mobo, procy, and ram [maybe a graphics card too....])

HAHA!
This would be wicked sweet but I'm no where near as needy as others. Good luck though.
Well, I updated my specs because the Acer board was shot, and a pin was broken off of the procy.

I'm thinking dual core AMD's at least, 4GB RAM, 500GB drive. I'm not sure if I'll provide the video card.
You rock Ken. Good luck everyone!
Well, I've got a Radeon x300 (I THINK....). Not the best x16 card in the world, but sure kicks butt against onboard graphics!
PS Farlo: I think you, ironically, have had the longest sig out of all of us.

All I have now is a generic pen 4 processor box gateway, may be half a gig of ram and a on board graphics card..
Uhm........
Are we going for oldest hardware?
Let's do this.
Socket 1 33MHz 486DX MoBo with 8MB RAM, Win3.1, ~200MB HDD.
killergamer
09-18-2011, 10:55 PM
haha, no I didnt think oldest hardware just the one I use now. =/ laptops charger is broken.
If it's in warranty?
Send it in.
Out of warranty?
Amazon.
killergamer
09-18-2011, 11:12 PM
Yea, not charger. Port, but yes I'm saving up for a new computer, hence the new second job. Its one of the few things I'm getting the money for. Computer is not in warranty..
eBay.
If you got the soldering skills......
Or, if you're lucky, some laptops come with either extension cards or cords.
Extension cards if they use the same MoBo for multiple model lappys.
Extension cord if they were smart enough to do it (like with my Toshiba)

Everyone needs for their "My System" specs to be updated to qualify. I may or may not have an actual contest thread. You might just be the lucky guy who gets a PM from me.
Kinda sad.
My laptop is five years old, and is faster than my desktop.
So, do you want our fastest machine specs? Or just our fastest desktop specs?
I'm sticking with desktop for now. It's what it was designed for.
TheGreatSatan

Your primary machine. I have 6 computers, but only 1 is my primary
xr4man

damn, i knew i shouldn't have upgraded top a quad core phenom 2 just yet.
Well, I have my laptop as my "primary"....
Although, it's not much faster than my deskop, other than 2GB DDRII....
Fixed it though.

I'm happy as s@#t with my computer.
lol was getting 187FPS on the dead island cut scenes, 87~100 in the game with all the settings at absolute maximum.
alice:madness returns runs like a demon on this system.
My computer really started to pump out the frames when i overclocked the H/T bus... Think i'm at 5900 MT/s from the stock 5200.. plus the processors at 3.7Ghz now and i managed to trim the latency down by 1 and still maintain stability.
think this is one of my first computers where everything possible has been overclocked.
~2FPS Minecraft, max settings.

Having been on the recieving end of TGS's generousity in the past I can say enjoy what comes your way and I wish I were in a position to contribute something back to the community other than encouragement, compliments, and occasional advice. Hopefully that will change in the not so distant future, looking into a career change that will bring in a little more $$. I'd be home a little less but the trade off will be worth it.
But I am with them.
As nice as it is to get nice them, it is really nice to be able to send.
Congratulations to whomever gets the toys.

I never understood why people waste money on sound cards. It never sounds any better than onboard
The only soundcard I would get (that wasn't onboard) is the SBLive.
And only because of the emu10k processor.
On an unrelated note, Trace Hagan and Cale Hagan are brothers, right?
Cale_Hagan

well, you obviously don't have good headphones, then. i rarely use my z-4's, trust me, asus zonar vs onboard, if you have good headphones, any average joe can hear the difference. never buy creative, in that case, i would prefer onboard. creative is crud.
it's a preference.

I have a LAN coming up next weekend where i'll be taking my rigs, and my roomie's rigs that i've built up to their limit... I'll start a thread... winner gets bragging rights? Anyway, back to the heart of the thread.
I've been looking at some of our member's specs over the last month when I realized that I could make a big difference. If I hold another contest and give away another prize, there's no telling if someone who really needs it gets the prize.
Here's the deal. I'm giving away one prize pack every month till December. The prize will always be awarded near the end of the month and I alone will choose the recipient. That's Sept, Oct, Nov and Dec. The prize will always be different. It's all about what I have to give away and who I want to have it.
Today, I will award the first prize.
The winner of Satan Claus comes to town for Sept is:
AmEv
I saw your specs some time ago and that's the reason this has all started. So three others winners have you to thank for such a pathetic system :D
Your prize may be the best of all. You will receive:
AMD Phenom X2 560 3.3GHz
Gigabyte 78LMT-S2P AM3+
PNY 8GB DDR3-1333
Radeon HD 6850 1GB
Your prize package is worth over $350! PM me your address!!
THANK YOU!!!1!

Now, to buy a new PSU....

Seriously, though, congrats to AmEv; you truly deserve it. Kudos and HIGH PRAISE to TGS for his benevolent generosity. PPS: Which manufacturer of video card?
I don't know. It's a stock card. I bought the card and a 1090T processor at the same time from AMD directly. It has no sticker, but is in perfect working order. I had it in the Zelda PC for about a month
I AM impressed by what I got, though.
Wish it wasn't mATX, though. I got a few PCI devices I wanted to use.

I could definitely use a SSD. My boot drive is a Hitachi Death wait, I mean DeskStar. It has crapped out on me once already, but fortunately it was under warranty. I can't say I've been a fan of my WD Green either, as a bunch of my files on it have gotten corrupted. Judging by Passmark, the i3 2100 would outperform my X3 710 by a decent margin as well.

I'd rather have a fast processor then a fast hard drive.
Cause a Hi-cache hard drive like a 64MB cache small density (like 500GB) Does pretty damn well in my system.
takes me 28 seconds to boot BattleGround europe, takes my buddy with a SSD drive a whoppin 21 seconds.

I can't say I need a new monitor, but it would be great productivity wise. I have three LCD's hooked up currently, but two of them are pretty sad. I pulled my 17" one out of a recycling pile and replaced some caps and fuses to get it working again. My 15" one came with my family's Pentium III desktop 12 years ago, and boasts a spectacular 200:1 contrast ratio.
MY 17" LCD... I have no idea what's wrong with it. Whether the controller board is fried or the LCD itself...
As for my 15" LCD, it's from a laptop. Needs a controller, and I know where to get one.
My main setup is dual 17" NEC CRTs.
So sad; my new graphics card is 3D capable, and it's going to power two tube monitors :(
*Edit: You can see how excited I am about it.... "My system"

Heh, a 24" monitor wouldn't fit onto my desk! Not that I need one, I'm happy with my dual monitor setup currently, a 22" (16:10, 1680x1050) and a 20" (16:9,1600x900) monitor. One for coding, the other for datasheets or references. I'll be happy when I can use it tomorrow to do the CAD models of the parts I need for an assignment.

my 27 is on its way out.
have to run crazy resolutions to keep it from jumping and doing some sort of crazy color flicker.
supposed to be a 1920x1200 monitor. right now its at... 1440x900
and it changes every day which is the crazy part. one day its fine at 1920x1200 another its 1600x1220 another its 1440x900.
My two monitors feel best at 1280*1024.
I've run them at 1600*1200, but I feel that that is just way too small

how do you do that?
Twigsoffury
09-27-2011, 03:25 PM
really???
how do you do that?
On your desktop (in windows vista/7)
Hold down the left control and then scroll the mouse wheel. (make sure you click the background first)
also works in internet browsers and other windows.
You can also just open start, type "dpi" and that'll bring up the "make text and other items smaller or larger"
i think 96dpi is the default which is actually pretty small @ 1600x1200 but i'm gotten used to small text over the years.
xr4man
09-27-2011, 04:32 PM
cool, i'll keep that in mind when my mother starts complaining about how small the text is on her netbook.
billygoat333
09-27-2011, 04:44 PM
In XP you just go into the advanced settings of the display properties, there you can set the text size.
Naw, I think that increasing the DPI puts things out of proportion.
Besides, I think that running it that high is bad for the monitor.

it's fine, its just software scaling the icons and crap. its not like physically overdriving some hardware or something to make the letter A have 10 pixels instead of 7.
and DPi settings can f@#k with some video games, but its mostly the cheesy games that grandma would play like farmville and such.

Well i don't honestly need any hardware, i'm perfectly happy with my "everything including the clock is overclocked" computer.
But i'd love video games! My Kiddo's medications ($$$$) pretty much keep me from legitimately being able to purchase the latest and greatest video games.
Maybe we ought to have one big christmas raffle for everyone on the forums who wants to participate. If you wanna throw down some computer parts /video games you can. and one of us randomly draws out of a hat (from there house) and tells us who gets what. and if its something that we don't feel we can use, then we can put our name back in the hat and get re-drawn?
I've got a X2 6000+ and a Core2Quad of some type.
I also spotted a eVGA 680i SLi mainboard at a thrift store (of all places lol) for 14.99 (plus half off so really its 7$) that im gonna try and pick up this weekend. (still in the box w/manual and packaging, yellow sticker is still over the LGA775 socket LOL)
I dunno just a idea : )

i have the only one and i've never photographed it or mentioned it on the internet until now.
Show me the 1100 transistors.
PS: concerning the prize, TGS, there are two words on the video card that intimidate me:
"Engineering Sample."
TheGreatSatan
10-02-2011, 01:12 PM
So what, it works. Played Crysis 2 just fine. I just let windows automatically download the drivers for me.
Kayin
10-02-2011, 02:11 PM
ES video cards should be fine. I've had a few. None caused problems.
I mean, intimidate in a good way.
Engineering samples are known to be fully unlocked pieces of tech.
Thanks again!
Kayin
10-02-2011, 03:23 PM
Not always. Many engineering samples do not function as well as full production models, and most ES processors do not overclock as well. They are normally created for the validation of BIOSes and drivers, as well as intermediary software (this typed from a setup with a top-end Lucid Hydra setup) but if they run games properly (as TGS has attested) then I would consider it to be a final evaluation prototype and not one of the inferior earlier items.
Now go have fun!

Isn't that what the TBCS TGIMBOEJ is about?
the bad part about the TGIMBOEJ is that it goes from person to person extremely slowly as least it seems with box #2. Its been 2 years now and its still on person #5
i mostly planed on putting bits and pieces in there anyways(adapters, cables, bridges), but i have bigger things like processors that id rather give away directly.

WHS 2011 will see a 3TB drive, it just won't let you back up more than 2TB. I'll have to check and see if my expander would see it, the controller card certainly will. A 3TB drive would allow me to retire all of the 250GB drives I am about to put into my WHS. Not sure if that qualifies as need though, lol.
Edit: At a max capacity of 15TB, it seems it will.
