i finally decided on a theme for my mechanic's new computer. as you all know it was a toss up between conspiracy theory stuff and cars. well, he's a saab tech and it will be easier and have a less chance of him breaking stuff if i just do a saab themed pc. so that's the winner.
so today i got a box of stuff from newegg.

i have never tried foxconn mobos, but it was the only one that was blue and yellow. this will match the case, which will be painted blue with the swedish flag on one side.
here is the case all torn apart. it is an old hp case, but i thought it looked kinda cool.

then i had to put things together and make sure they work.

i installed windows and all the drivers so now i guess i actually have to start modding the case.
anyway, until then, here are the system specs:
amd athlon 2 dual core regor blah blah blah 3ghz
foxconn mobo with on board radeon hd 4250 video (that'll be more than he needs for watching youtube videos)
320g western digital caviar blue
samsung dvd burner
cooler master 460w psu
4g adata ram (it has blue heat spreaders to match the color scheme)

oh yeah, one question... what does everyone use to get the adhesive off the case after peeling off the stickers?
I just rub it off with my fingers.
Gets the glue moving around, nice and dirty, just rolls right off.

This is the closest I can find:

You may just need to buy a standard LED fan (any color) and just replace the LEDs with yellow ones yourself

yeah i found the stove fans too. but the red doesn't match the color scheme.
i'm thinking i might just have to get a clear fan and wrap a flexible led strip around it.

Should make him a Volvo case just to mess with him. ;)
How about just a yellow fan?

ah yes, that yellow fan will work nicely.
also, making a volvo case wouldn't do much to screw with him since he started out at a shop that worked on volvos and saabs. now, if i based it on a saab 9-7, that would do it. since it is a saab-ified gmc envoy and he despises and hates gm with all his heart.
what i do plan on doing though is changing the splash screen. the foxconn mobo came with a utility to change it, so i am going to make a new splash screen that says something like "i am watching you" or "i always know what you are doing". that should play into his conspiracy paranoia rather nicely!

for the weekend, i got a lot of paint work done. there's a touch of over spray on the swedish flag and the saab lettering isn't perfectly straight, but it will have to do.
i also mounted the mobo, power supply and dvd burner.

i have everything up and running now. unfortunately the case fan in the back isn't controlled by the mobo, so it's quite loud. i have another pwm case fan on the way that will replace it so it runs nice a quiet.

update:
i was talking to my mechanic today and he tells me he loves the window and the lights because it serves 2 purposes, 1. it serves as a night light so he can see to get up in the middle of the night without stubbing his toe and 2. he can easily see when it's time to blow the dust out, which it is apparently that time now.
just thought i'd share, lol.
