Found this on Speedhunters today and thought it was pretty interesting. I thought Id post it up since I seem to remember there being at least a handful of Volvo Lovers around here.

Edit: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ymi0xkErqWI&feature=player_embedded I don't know how to make youtube work.

That Mk1 is awesome. I wish I had the skill and money to put something awesome together like one of those.

Though at the end of the day I'd probably be happier driving home an unmodified Porsche. It's probably more comfortable and more reliable and the modified cars even if slower.

It's not that hard to make that little weight go fast... its the safety part that is hard.

lol I know what you mean. The car i was previously working on was an EF civic hatch thats probably just a bit bigger than those old MK1 golfs. The thing was like a tin can. I had it gutted out and my buddies all agreed that they felt entirely unsafe riding in it. I always planned on getting a roll cage put in but have since given up on it.

A lot of the vettes on the road aren't that quick anyway, but a lot of people fail to realize that.

Some of them trucks are making in excess of 400Bhp and pack wickedly huge turbos.

most are coming with just about 400 from the factory now. Most souped-up ones are in the 600-1000+ HP range :D

Majorbud has them dodge trucks with the new Turbo diesel.

holy s@#t that thing is fast.

hit the gas and its like going to space with a high pitched SSHHHHHHHHHHH.

just looked online it said 610ft/pds torque.

I have to say Ive never been a fan of these big diesel trucks. They seem sort of pointless to anyone that's not towing or hauling stuff. I'm always confused by the videos of them spewing thick black smoke everywhere as if it's cool.

The power output is definitely impressive though.

In laymans terms if you are throwing black smoke you are wasting fuel. As far as being pointless it is all a difference in preference and opinion.

So does that imply that tuned "properly" you could still extract the same power without all the wasted fuel on one of these bad boys or is the wasted fuel part of the engine design?

From my knowledge yes. Inherently though with some performance modifications there is always going to be wasted fuel. It is more evident in diesel because it rolls black smoke where as in gas motors its not nearly as evident because it is a white or almost invisible puff of carbon smoke. But there are a lot of turbo diesel vehicles that have been highly modified that don't roll smoke.

here is a decent example

Yes, smoke = unburnt fuel and means you need to lean it out a tad or get a bigger turbo. Most hillbillies/uneducated oilheads think smoke=win. There is actually a thing called a smoke switch, so that if your truck doesn't smoke, you can flip a switch and make it smoke. Horrible.

Properly tuned diesels make just as much power with no smoke. See the video below. Bank's Power makes some of the best diesel addons, and with NO SMOKE. This vid is Banks setting a NHDRA world record 1/4 mile in a twin-turbo Duramax. Pure win. Kids will learn smoke = NOOB one day :D

And as fara s doing it just to have one, yea it's pointless in a way. But so are all the kids in the hood with their souped-up ricers :whistler: Hell I've smoked ricers with my 99 1/2-ton truck that's got over 160k on her. But to do it with a big, rusty rattly diesel is all the more fun :D

xr4man
10-11-2011, 10:27 AM
i also agree that the big diesel trucks are pointless unless you have a real world need for something that big. and yeah i also feel the same way about pretty much any souped up car. but that doesn't stop me from dumping stupid amounts of money into my car to make it better - faster - funner, etc.

anyway, the trucks are faster in the 1/4 mile not from horse power but from stupidly high amounts of torque right off throttle.

but what really annoys me about the diesel trucks around here is that everyone that has one seems to think that just because they have a turbo all of a sudden they are a high performance nissan gtr. they like to rev the **** out of em at every chance they get and as most educated people know, diesels don't like being rev-ed much past 3000 rpm.

I'm not gonna say its any more pointless than Kids with there tuners. *looks out the window at my car with shame* Just different strokes for different folks i guess. I suppose I would just personally like to see less trucks and SUVs on the road. Smoking Ricers in ANY old beater is fun, hence the original video post.

I haven't seen that, What annoys me about them is that it seems like most people in my area that have one, drive like tools. I suppose it's an unfair judgement to make but I've been cut off/almost hit a number of times by large diesel trucks. My old car was like a tin can so it wasn't exactly a pleasant experience having a lifted heavy duty truck run me off the road.

i don't know where you live, but here in red-neck central, they like to drive right down the middle of the road, yes even when there are yellow lines. maybe it's just my area that has an abundance of extremely stupid people. and they say virginians are back woods rednecks, just come a little further north to maryland and you'll see real rednecks and just a bit further to pennsyltucky and you get to see real honest to goodness hillbillies.

I'm not sure I would choose England over the US at large, but if it was between PA and England i might consider it. I don't know enough about England's government though. I always hear that it's sort of a surveillance society, which i don't really like. But I figure 10 years down the road the US will be under the watchful eye of big brother just as much so i suppose its a toss up. I'd love to visit though

However, I do like girls with English accents and you could technically drive to Germany. I would love to take a trip to the Ring.

I've always been curious. Can you drive in Germany with a UK drivers license. Like could you take a trip and drive on the Autobahn? Any body knows how that works as far as drive across Europe?

Obviously the Ring is a special circumstance since it's a private track but I mean more or less driving on some of the nicer public roads that Europe is known for.

xr4man
10-11-2011, 03:57 PM
just asked the german engineer that sits in the cube next to me. he says that you can drive anywhere in europe with a uk license and a US license for that matter. you don't need a special license for it.

no worries, no one really knows what it is, it's such an obscure car.

anyway, it's a merkur xr4ti. imported by lincoln mercury in the '80s. it was ford's attempt to bring over their european sporting cars. even though the xr4ti was and still is an impressive car, it was a total and complete marketing failure over here.

it runs ford's 2.3 turbo motor. same one in the thunderbird turbo coupes.

it's european brother is the ford sierra.

oh yeah, i finally watched the first video and all i have to say is that is one PISSED m5 owner now.lol

also, i love me some supra engine. the supra has always been my first love. and not just the mark 4 supras but all the way back to the mk 1s.

the mk1 at the right is mine. this is a sight that is extremely rare to see, all 4 generations in the same spot at the same time. the white mk3 in teh picture is rocking a lexus v-8.

2.3 turbo. Sounds fun : )

My roommate was going to buy a lexus v8 for his SC300 but decided instead to stick with his 1jz swap. I have to say, the twin turbo is pretty beastly. He has no traction past 4k and i can't imagine what it would be like in a lighter car that didn't have all the luxury fluff that his car has.

which is exactly when it becomes dangerous especially around other vehicles. He claims it was on a closed course which it clearly wasn't.
