Hey guys, I've been invited to buy a lytro camera now instead of having to wait for one. If you don't know what it is you can go here (http://www.lytro.com/). There is a place to buy one on the website, but apparently I can get one with free shipping and have one reserved for me this whole week.

Note: This currently only has interface software in Mac OSX 10.6 or higher, so no Windows yet.

Let me know if you are interested, although I'm not totally sure how good a deal this is for me compared to normal people.

This is strange. Does anyone think this tech will take off or is it going to be a fad/gimick/niche market kind of item?

I can see it being a hit in Fad cities, ie San Diego, LA, NYC... It's neat I suppose but are you really only capable of having one spot in focus? So if two people were in the picture, someone's getting blurred?

No, everything is in focus, so if all your friends are at the same distance, then yeah they are all fine, but if they are at different distances you are screwed unless you do some fancy editing. But as of right now, the only way to view or edit the images is with their software. So, to answer the 'if/when will it catch on' question, it will catch on when there is other software (ie Photoshop) that supports the file format.

So, to get back to the question a little more, Buzz, yeah, you might as well put a f22 lens on your slr and get everything in focus if that is what you are going for.
