Hey, i'm currently in the middle of a worklog that i would like to share with you all,
I'm new, so i'm seriously not trying to break rules

i have withheld the first couple of pages, because they are messy :)

This thread has been taken from http:www.speedlabs.org

Hey, i have been working on this mod for a while, however, i have found my feet now and so we should see some good progress.
The first thing i did was to cut out a fan hole and line it with PVC pipe.
Here are the first pics after i cut the excess pipe down and sanded it to the surface of the bezel http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_0983.jpg

YOu can see the fan i am going to use as the bezel is on the case.

with flash
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/581b5ef8.jpg

The vision for the next bit of the bezel is something i have never seen before.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/flames.jpg

This involves the empty part of the bezel that usually contains CD-roms and DVD drives. THe basic idea is very simple, i want to fill that area with three layers of blue perspex, in the shape of flames. Where there are more layers of perspex it will be darker and less layers lighter.
The first thing to do was to cut away the plastic that provided support for the insert in the bezel.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_0986.jpg

This was difficult in parts and i cut in a bit too much,

but it's ok, cause it will be covered with flames eventually

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_0989.jpg
shiks

will update again when i have fully sanded back and am ready to start on the flames

UPDATES,
Well, it's about time i got my act together and stopped playing Battlefield!!

Anyway, i wasn't able to keep a very good work log for all of this, as the camera's memory card was on hollidays

so

I have cut the name of the case (flamed) out of the side, the intention is that it will be back lit and have perspex behind it, i have almost finished it, just have to smooth it off more :)

Yesterday while i was in sydney i bought a fan controller/temp gauge/cool audio needle. Anyway, the analouge dials are going to be mounted into the front of the case, just below where the flames will go

Firstly i marked where i was going to cut the holes, then drilled an entry point.

THen i enlarged this with my trusty coping saw, and dremmel sanded it with my drill.
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1005.jpg

A bit of sanding to smooth off the raggy bits, and in goes the gauage
http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1006.jpg

cool eh?

Now for the other one

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1009.jpg

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1013.jpg

The one in the middle will be the hardest, because of the old power button, next update = bondo to the rescue

Well, the middle Analouge piece was the hardest because of the old power switch,

However i used the same procedure, marked it out, and drilled a hole

around the markings i cut again with my coping saw, straight through the power switch markings

I sanded it back with the drill dremmel until the display fitted into the hole, as you can see, due to the power button, there is a small gap there.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1016.jpg

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1019.jpg

I tooK a small piece of plastic that came with the unit and cut it to size. That i stuck to the front over the place that required filling. I used sellys filler for the job, which hardened in about 10 minutes

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1021.jpg

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1020.jpg

I then pulled the plastic off revealing the nice smooth finish below

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1022.jpg

Put the gauges in for a look see, sexeh!!

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1024.jpg

THere were a few small gaps, so i filled them in with a small amount of filler.

After that dried it was sanded back

and boy does it look pretty!!

I then attacked the whole thing with wet 'n' dry to get it ready for painting

The first coat of paint, nice i think

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1030.jpg

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1031.jpg

All i have to do to this particular piece is to get a nice refective finnish on the paint

Feedback is welcome and very appreciated

]..::UPDATES::..

Roof inlaid power button!!

Ok, as i have used up basically all the available room on the front bezel, i have decided to mount the power button on the roof panel.

Firstly i found the button i wanted, this is a very old one, from a very old case, as it is an old power button, it requires a little modifiaction to fit the usual power button in.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1033.jpg

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1034.jpg

Then i marked out the area to be cut on the case, used a 10 cent coin to trace around.

Drilled a small hole

enlarged that

and enlarged again with tin snips.

Started removing jaggy edges with dremmel/drill

Soon the hole was nice and round

I then marked the holes to be drilled, unfortunately, the drill moved while drilling and they are not straight, so i will have to do them again

These pics give an idea of what it will eventually look like

Some shots of the entire thing

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1049.jpg

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1050.jpg

blah, not working how i want, however you may see my progress

First i drew it up and drilled the new holes and screwwed the swich in again

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1052.jpg

Then i removed the other screws and covered the holes in putty

That puttty, was then sanded down, annoying cause it keeps crumbling at the edges and not lying flat

Then i gave it a quick coat of paint to try and settle the putty

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1055.jpg

slowly getting there, i just need to pinstakingly sand the lumps down now to make it nice and smooth

OKIES

.:.:.:.UPDATE.:.:.:.

Ok, this update is the start of a long process, i am now doing the last things before i paint the bezel, properly, i i have to get the shape and ETc that i want.

Problem: THe Flamed text down the side is not how i want it, so i bondo'ed it up and started filing away again

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1059.jpg

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1060.jpg

After two lots of Bondo stuff going on and sanding it all down, i feel better about it, so i added a light coat of paint to see what it will look like

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1062.jpg

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1063.jpg

It will be back lit by some bubble lights and a cold cathode tube, put soem in to have a look, and swanky it is indeed!!

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1065.jpg

Thanks for the comments and support guys

::UPDATES::

Okies, i hace finnished the "white" part of the plastic bezel, now don't take that wrong, i still have to do the mesh and the perspex, but for painting purposes, it's done (maybe a few touchups with bondo)

Anyway, i have cut the FLame Grill Holes and recut the slider holes, with my trusty Coping saw, i am getting better each time i pick the thing up!!

Well, that seems very much to be the theme of these next photo's as well.

I am working at the front, generally making it scratch free etc. THat involved putting on a layer of paint :)

This layer will be sanded back, and will help to find small raised sections in the front :)

.::<[UPDATE]>::..

Now it has , been quite a while since my last update, and i do have reasons, such as uni, etc that has kept me...rather busy. Anyway, i hope you like what i've done, it is coming along nicely

Firstly, the top of the case Bezel, didn't quite look finnished, so i have added in a piece of plastic, to.. even it out

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1120.jpg

That's the piece inserted, with the first layer of bondo

and the many

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1122.jpg

succesive

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1123.jpg

layers

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1124.jpg

of

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1128.jpg

bondo

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1131.jpg

some spray putty

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1134.jpg

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1135.jpg

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1136.jpg

Sanded back again

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1140.jpg

And painted black (fun)

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1143.jpg

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1144.jpg

Then some spray putty over the whole thing

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1145.jpg

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1146.jpg

OK, the next bit!!

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1151.jpg

I got the grill today, that i am going to be using in the case...
MAN it is thick!!

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1152.jpg

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1153.jpg

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1154.jpg

THen i started to cut the flame grills for in the holes, i traced onto paper, cut that out

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1155.jpg

Then i stickied that onto the grill, and cut it out, with a 1/2cm margin around it

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1156.jpg

I then cut little slits into it, so i could bend it

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1157.jpg

started bending it

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1158.jpg

more bending

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1159.jpg

some more

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1163.jpg

It's coming along nicely :)

Well well well, here we are again, another update in the world of fire :)

Today, as i got my Dremmel, i did alot of work on my case window, i have been looking foreward to doing this for a long time, and finally the time is here

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1254.jpg

Firstly i drew the pattern on the perspex, namely blue flames, i did it by hand without a stencil

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1255.jpg

THen i started cutting a channel along the line, to give it a nice hard edge

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1256.jpg

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1257.jpg

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1258.jpg

Peel the backing off, ooh nice and shiny :)

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1259.jpg

sand with sandpaper, to give it a frosted look

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1260.jpg

I then washed it off and peeled the rest of the backing off, i think it looks nice,

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1261.jpg

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1262.jpg

What do You think??

Ok, here's another update.
I was never happy with the perspex window, so i have redone it.

I like the new flames alot more, i got them from a stencil, so much lazier, but alot easier

Anyway, i also finnished the roof panel. It will now go somewhere safe until i put the computer together. I has a ver nice mirror finnish on it and overall i am varily pleased

Anyway, i have started producing the water cooling system for falmed, and as it is going to have a few custom bits and pieces in it, i thought i would start a clean new thread.

PART 1 : T[h]e [R]adiator

I have made Water cooling systems before, but my last one, The compressor was very large, effective but large. THis mean't that it wouldn't fit into any sort of computer case.
For flamed however, i wanted something that i could intergrate seamlessly into the case. Oh, and thanks hillbilly for the Rad guide, followed the first bit then went my own way.
Firstly, i went to the local wreaker, and got a Toyota Corolla radiator, with a copper core. I can see now why this is one of the preffered rads, it seems made for water cooling.
The first thing i did was to design on paper, the plexi top, onto which i will attach the fans. I just put the fans onto it, then traced around them. THen i measured up the rad, put the data in and cut some round holes out. The holes will be where the fans will go

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1295.jpg

I then had a look at said Heater core (radiator) and saw that it was very dirty, all oxidised and brown. It also had this layer of what looked like prehistoric foam on it, which was quite firmly stuck. So i gave it a bath, and a soak to loosen the stuck foam.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1302.jpg

After it's luxuriating soak, the layer of foam came off relitivly easily with a spatula (mum will kill me). After it was off, i was able to start sanding and buffing the two ends. I was actually surprised to see that it was a mixture of metals, like it had been repaired..hmmm
Anyway, i actually came out quite nicely after many hours of sand and cut and polish

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1303.jpg

However, the side rails, that you can see with the many holes are made from steel, They may have in a past life been coated with zinc, but i destroyed all that with my vigorous sanding. I decided to paint them black. Unobtrusive and sublime i thought it would contrast nicely with the shiny ends. I taped up all the bits i didn't want painted, and let fly. it came up alright

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1308.jpg

THen i cut off the ends of the pipes, to the length that i wanted, i also cut them at a slight angle so to make it easier when i'm putting on the hoses as i don't use barbs. THey were then sanded all straight and nice with my engraver.

Here are a few final shots of the Radiator, finished and ready for the plexiwork

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1309.jpg

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1310.jpg

Till next time
shiks

Shikimaru
06-16-2006, 12:15 AM
ok, this punning is getting out of control, anyway, i have made the base shroud for the radiator, this will contact the floor and is mainly there to help with securing the radiator to the case

I started by cutting the desired shape out of perspex, i did this with a saw, and it came up alright, no cracks at least
I then measured up 1cm from the outside border, to be my hole, i employed a couple of different methods for cutting this as i cant cut straight away with a saw, i started with a cutting piece on the engraver.

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1311.jpg

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1312.jpg

Good results, but unfortunately i can't be bothered spending so much time, as this was taking ages, so i took up a hacksaw, drilled some starting holes, and away i went. THe hacksaw was alot faster, but it resulted in the plexi getting bashed around alot...i'm not sure whether i will sand it back and polish of not, afterall, it won't be very visable
Anyway, this is what i ended up with

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1313.jpg

http://i30.photobucket.com/albums/c310/shikimaru_/Img_1314.jpg

Using a car radiator for a computer. Now that's a sweet idea.

I am very impressed with the amount of work you've put into your bezel.
I want to see the front completed. I think the mesh and gauges work well together.

That's actually a hearter core from a 1988 Toyota Camry, The front bezel, is waiting for now, until i can get some perspex lazer cut, i don't have good enough tools to cut the detail that i want to put into it
Until then i am working on the other stuff that needs to be done, not so pretty, but it still needs to be done

it's a little different, with 1x120mm fan instead of the two 80mm fans :)

I don't know what it is about the pictures of the heater core on the hard wood flooring... You got it standing up and laying down on the nice wood flooring and it is placed with shadows around it (only the sun shining through the window?). I guess it is artistic. Reminds me of something but I can't put my finger on it.

Weird post, I know. hehe

I really like what you did with your plexi window. Making the flames frosted was a really cool idea.

Did you mod that PSU by adding a 120mm fan and making the back (where the power switch is) meshed?

For a minute there I jus thoguh it was another stock power supply but I guess he did a really clean job of putting a new back grill no it where the 80mm fan was.

sorry,

The bottom of the PSU had an 80mm fan in it, i made a bigger hole, which i filled with blue plexi, and put a 120mm fan into

Then as i put a 120mm fan in, i needed a meshed back, so i cut out the metal, and replaced it with mesh

That is a really nice job you did with the PSU!

Are you going to keep the green button and cable sleeving?

yes, i have to basicly, can't really afford to change them, though i might wrap the cables in glowing blue wire

Maybe instead of changing them, you could paint them.

Okay,

More work has been done on the bezel, as i am a selfish bastige, the worklog was not recorded, but here are a few images to show you all what i have done.

Lets just say, it's getting there

I have done the flames for in the big hole, and fully bondo'ed them in, they look pretty shwick
