well.. youve got a 6800 already? cause you'd only be able to get about the same for 200. you should use that money for something else. you wont get any better for 200 than what you already have.

my suggestion....instead of spending the money now, and only seeing minimal performance increases..(because rule of thumb is only upgrade to see a 50% increase) why not save up a bit more.... and get this card..

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814121213 a dual cored 7800gt (slightly overpriced though)

just kidding. alhtough that would be sweet. but.. no. i personally would wait for an upgrade. unless you are gonna spend some serious coin, but.. for 200-300 bucks, you really arent gonna get much of an upgrade.
and if you want my 2 cents, like i tell everyone else, think about gettin a 512 card, and preferabbly a nividia based card. just because their drivers eat ATI's, and there cards are just as if not better. but.. thats all IMO

Why don't you just save up everything and w8 for one of the next gen cards in a few years time or just w8 for the PPU's to be released.

The PPUs in australia are going to cost about $500, but the demo of the technology is FANTASTIC!!

*coughs* But waiting for the PPU to be released is a good idea to me.

first off, i want and i need are different things. you can get a new card, but you wont be hapy enough to make it worth your while. secondly, do you know what a ppu is? it sounds like you might, but im not sure your wording is correct. what i mean by that is, i think its difficult to understand what you are tryin to say with the way your formed that sentence. i think wha tyou mean is there arent enough games out there that support the benefits of a ppu yet? correct me if im wrong.

if you want a laptop with a dedicated video card that will play games the same or better than your desktop, you're gonna have to spend a lot of money. my laptop has an Athlon 64 3400 Mobile , 1 gb ddr333, and an ATI mobilty radeon X600 128MB, and i can still only run games like battlefield 2 at medium/low settings. and i paid a pretty penny. like over $1500 CAD so.. you might as well scratch of laptop

you are def right. still too new, not enough support and from what ive read, the games that do support it dont show any signigicant visual benfits from it anyway. sorry i doubted your knowledge of the ppu.

Take that 200$, get a bank account, and let it sit. Because if you come back later, you'll have more money. Even better yet; get a savings account. Higher intrest rate.

That's my advice, is to wait for newer tech to push current tech prices down. And to let your money grow in the process.

I'm sure the folks would die if you asked for a savings account. So i forbid it on health and safety grounds.

I am definately a member of the tribe that weighs carefully the cost/benefit ratio. With anything bleeding-edgee, you're going to be paying a hefty premium for a nominal increase in performance. For an upgrade of this nature, youre paying a good amount of money for nominal upgrade in performance. The PPU cards that are out now are expensive, and again offer a nominal upgrade in performance (well, a good upgrade in performance on a nominal number of applications).

I'm excited about the new PPUs, and would love to try them out, but with the limited applications available I don't see any real need to spend money on them which would be better spent on other uses, such as paying bills, buying new toys or stashing for a rainy day (almost always one of the first two, heh).

I'm always wary of new technology in it's infancy - I prefer to wait a generation or two for the use to become more mainstream, the bugs to get worked out, the performance to be upgraded and the cost to become more reasonable. Luckily, at the rate that technology improves and becomes integrated into the mainstream these days, the wait is rarely long.

I agree you should wate for next gen tech and get it all cheaper. thats what i'm doing and if you wanted to go SLI pool all of your money and just get a single card like a 7900GT or a 7900GTX.

Ok i dont think you understand I dont have $200 I have a birthday

i think this is the point he is tryin to get across people. he doesnt have any money to spend on his computer, but he can get a $200 gift for his birthday.. so.. what computer part should he buy for $200.

you know.. i just realized. im lookin at your system specs here, and im actually looking at them. so.. you have this system??

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1784526,00.asp

and you want to use $200 bucks? you've already got 500 gb sata's on RAID, a kickass cpu

(which by the way i think is this one..correct me if im wrong.)

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1532909&CatId=2015

a 20 inch lcd? logitech surround? dual tv tuners? soundblaster audigy?

but yet.. only 1024 ram? well.. without a doubt, for 200 bucks, your best bet is to up that ram.

http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1717669&sku=C13-5104%20PT
or get a couple sticks of these
http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1519102&CatId=1825
or a couple of these. (which might be a bit more pricy)
