I need a BF3 joystick - I can't figure this out

I can fly a helicopter alright with my mouse and keyboard, but I blow on an airplane. A friend is using the Microsoft sidewinder, but Newegg has many bad reviews on every joystick they offer.

Who is playing BF3 and what joystick do you use?

My Logitech Extreme 3D Pro Joystick has never failed me. OK the first one did after many years of abuse, but it performed so well I bought another to replace it. I use a metal clip on the throttle so my thumb does not slip off.

I have an old one by logitech that uses a game port to usb adapter that works well. I just don't remember the name of it.

I have the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro. It worked well with HAWX, it just took a while to get used to what buttons did what. I paid a lot more for it though!

Does the game let you run keyboard and mouse + the joystiq at the same time or are you then forced to play FPS with the Joystiq?

Let me know how it works out.. I have just been using the mouse and kybd for jets and if you look at my stats .. you can tell! I have thought about trying out my Saitek Cyborg 3D Gold on it but wasn't sure if it was worth configuring it up.. and also figuring out if it would interfere with other aspects of the game.

Although when it comes to jet combat.. I kind of like this approach...

yea that jet kill was sick! I don't use a joystick but I've got my trusty old Saitek Cyborg Gold sitting collecting dust, maybe it'll help me with the jets lol

WTF is up with physics in battlefield?
Not only this video but i saw another video were someone sniped a jet out of the air from the top of that big tower... and then jumped in to the jet as it slowed to a halt in front of the tower. Are these modified physics or is this how the game handles?

Once you use one, all else is complete crap by comparison.


Sure they don't have LED lights like a UFO or ultra macros buttons you'll never really use anyways.


But they are accurate,They operate smoother then a scalpel, they are strong, they are built to last and they are the industry standard in simulators government and civilian alike.

I got it and it's impossible to use. I had to go in the game and delete all key bindings for when I'm on foot or in a tank/vehicle. I left helicopters and planes on default settings. But when I finally get into a plane nothing works. No button on the keyboard or joystick gets the plane off the ground.

I still can't figure out what the functions of a joystick even are or what functions should be assigned to what button or lever.

make sure its set as the default device in windows if you have multiple devices connected at once.


Goto start

Type "Controllers"

click "Set up USB controllers"

highlight the controller.

Click advanced

Set preferred device.

You can always use JoyToKey (http://www.electracode.com/4/joy2key/JoyToKey%20English%20Version.htm) which maps your joystick to keyboard/mouse input. Works well with my 360 controller.

No, joysticks have their own separate control panel from mice.

I dunno some games just have trouble with two controllers, if two controllers have the same X-Y axis names and button lays will always get you on those games as well.


Might not solve your problem, because you'd think 2011 game would already have that built in though, but its worth a shot.

My son is using my Saitek X52 like the one below with BF3...had similar issues...so I started looking around on how to sort this out and I came across the following on EA UK forums:

- In game, make sure for your 'in jet' settings, that you leave the pitch forward and role settings blank, as the profile will take care of that.

I tried the above and it seems to work...I cleared all bindings in the controller menu within the game...maybe if you tried to clear the bindings for your controller, it might produce results?

Another recommendation is as follows from the same site:
-Go to My Documents/Battlefield 3/Settings/
-Backup PROF_SAVE_profile and store it somewhere
-Open PROF_SAVE_profile with wordpad (or other text editor)
-Find the line "GstInput.Deadzone 0.300000" and change the value to 0.000000 ( or lower than 0.3 )

Someone else did this:
- Go ahead and load the profile. When in game, hit ESC go to the "Options" menu and click on "Key Bindings", "In Jet".
- In the "Keyboard" column, delete all the key bindings except for:
Fire (Space)
Fire Countermeasures (X)
Enter/Exit Vehicle (E).

- In the Mouse column, Just leave Fire (LMB)

- In the Joystick column, only set the following bindings. Delete all others:
Throttle UP (AXIS Z-)
Throttle Down (AXIS Z+)
Yaw Right (AXIS 1X)
Yaw Left (AXIS 1X)
Pitch Down (AXIS 1Y)
Pitch Up (AXIS 1Y)
Roll Right (ROT Z+)
Roll Left (ROT Z-)
Afterburner (BUTTON 2)
Select Weapon (BUTTON 23)

He mentions that he also had to change vertical Flight to Normal instead of inverted to get the pitch up and pitch down to work properly.

These are the only buttons that should be defined.

Even though these buttons are not defined in the bindings:
Counter measures is BUTTON 7
Afterburner is actually BUTTON 8
To switch weapons, just press the Throttle HAT button.
