View Full Version : Why are you on TBCS?

There are a dime a dozen modding sites out there...I wondered why would anyone come here, to TBCS instead of going to any other site to showcase their work? I will list my reasons here...maybe others can share too, whether they are new here (like me) or have been here forever :D
My reasons are:
- The whole concept and the name - who else can represent your efforts through just a name - The Best Case Scenario - woot!
- Some exceptionally gifted modders!
- Layout and presentation of information for noobs to start earning their stripes...
Last but not least
- Cool staff! Admins, Editors, Journalists....
What brought you here to TBCS?

doom3 mod.
LONG story.
The TL;DR version:
'cause.
Short version.
Saw Bill's mods, joined his forum.
Then got recommended here.
Bill's forum died (down).
I stayed.
Long story (and the reason I love modding):
I needed help for a PCChips board. (it was dead). Found a forum, who had recognized it a few times, so I joined it.
Then I bumped into Thrasher2's and Bill Owen's worklogs, fell in love with them.
So I decided to try my hand at a custom case. (that project has long been dead and scrapped.)
Then I decided to follow Bill to his forum. He recognized me.
Then the first forum had a server upgrade (2-3 weeks of outage), followed a a rouge ad (another week of outage). KILLED the forum.
So I hung out at Bill's forum.
Then I found TBCS through many referrals, especially to the ModWiki. I joined for that reason.
But Bill's forum just didn't have the same appeal as here, so I practically left it.
So, when I won shtuff, this became my #1 forum.

I think i signed up after seeming some of Paul's Mods.
I've honestly been telling myself that I would Mod something for years now. The only thing I have to show for it is the iBook i dyed black a few years back. I mostly troll the OS forums waaaay down at the bottom and the Chatterbox. It's just a really great community here.

i joined because of all the great people here. '
I feel like this is a fair forum where everyone is equal unlike a bunch of other places.
people here try to actually help you learn things instead of making fun of you.
i have many reason why im here.

I forget the exact reason, I just remember I was starting to see some cool computers and trends pop up and I think I just did a google search like I do with most things. TBCS's layout was way different back then and I remember the style catching my attention, plus the community was helpful and knowledgeable. Having some awesome mods on the site helped too.

I was interested in the Level 10 GT case, and I kept getting links to Will's mod, and followed that here and saw all the other mods and got hooked :p

glad you stuck around :D
I came here after seeing Motorized Madness on a modding showcase site which is no longer around and I can't remember the name of  and I was hooked and stuck around and started modding my own stuff. Only recently (because of sponsorships) have I been duplicating my worklogs on other forums, but TBCS has been and will be my home base :)

I joined in 2006, when it looked like this:
http://web.archive.org/web/20060314173131/http://www.thebestcasescenario.com/forum/
then we changed over in late 2007/early 2008 iirc.
I remember all the work we had to do to prep the site for the changeover. They actually made a clone website so they could build and test the website without the members knowing anything was going on. ;)
Sheesh!
What brought you here 6 years ago, TGS???

When I was working on my first mod (which I never actually finished...) I started looking around to see what other types of mods people had done, and I (like 985232) stumbled across motorized madness and water cooling turbine, and I stayed after that.
Only thing I kinda regret is not being able to see TribalOverKill's worklogs.
I saw they were stickied on the first forum I was on. I just barely missed it.
Hate to say it, but I haven't seen any of Paul's mods completely yet.

TIP-3000 brought me here ~5 1/2 years ago. I lurked for about a year, then joined up when I wanted to start my own project.
The community kept me coming back.

i found this place while looking for some ideas for modding my desktop. i looked at some stuff just in passing and then i saw the thread about the dude that was in some serious financial trouble. there was a raffle set up to help him through whatever it was. things like that are what i look for in a community to join. i was too late for that one. but that is what made me join here rather than any other forums i found. then i realized all the cool kids were here anyway.
so, long story short, it was the compassion of the people here that drew me in.

It's still going matter o' fact out in a farm garage in perkins Oklahoma.
It's got 2x 250GB drives jam packed with ROM's and emu's
New emu/rom browser as well that is simply sweet. (forgot the name of it right now though LOL)

close, that would have been # 130something.
Hmmm, I really cannot remember what first drew me here. What kept me here, though, was definitely the people. TBCS is one of if not the best online community I have run across over the years, and I am proud to be a member of it. I have never found such a diverse group of awesome people in one place before. I, like many others around here, have moved away from PC modding over the years, but I keep coming back for the people, the community, and the incredibly diverse knowledge base. ...plus, there are some amazing works of art around here. Crazy amount of talent on this site. ;)
BTW, xr4man, update on that event you mentioned here. ;)

Hmmm...not sure...I work from home most of the time when I am not traveling...get up at 6 or so to drop wife off to work, then kids to school and "work" 9AM - 5PM :whistler: maybe because we're in the same time zone
You're due north of me......

Yeah, its more like the great white north...LOL...its crazy on/off weather here...one day there is sun and warmth, the other day either it snows or damp and cold...can't do a thing!
Dude, Idaho weather is strange.
We got 6 inches of snow in one day; next it was balmy with no snow in sight.

Doom3 Casemod, and i saw Kier ('i know him' from many dutch sites) showing up here aswell and i'm planning on my first ever casemod.
Getting information and tips is a first good step.
So hi all !.. i'll start on my own casemod soon / after i got my components around juli.
at the moment i got my first material : styrofoam (green-styrodur)
and i'm trying to work out how to create the various challanges lying ahead to create the casemod i have in mind. Current unsolved / semi solved problems:
Making a hinged front door covering the drivebays and reducing noise
-- buying a case with a hinged front door (often not the high end cases i'd like for the internal quality and finish)
-- making a hinged door myself on a high end case (gaming rig).
-- main problem: the hinge and door (i have old side-panels and styrodur/wood but i'd like it to reduce noise, not enhancing it)
planned finish: smithed steel look / Dark hammerite coating.
Demands: usb ports and audio ports must stay accesable at all times-> above outside the door. power button must be accesable easily (dont see a problem to place these elsewhere.
Controling vents (shaped like scales) on top of my pc-case for air-vent.
available solutions: (p.s. the scales are curved (150mm<R)
automated: (preferably temperature / fanspeed (linked) controlled)
- linear actuated rod with small (bone shaped) levers attached to the vents
- rotary (sprocket) actuated scales driven on by a M10 rod (screw based)
- rotary (nuts+levers) actuated scales driven on by a M10 rod (screw based).
Hand driven:
- long rod with levers pushing the scales up: mock up the rod-shifting handle.
- rotary actuate the scales.
Any tips/suggestions are welcome!

I love to see your steampunk Tablet.
I adore steampunk! (i'm working on a steampunk costume atm :P).
For my case i determined it a step to high (yet).
the one i'm planning on is gonna be a full-dragon theme.
and i'll be using dragon scales, leather, red plexi and a black-red theme.
with some gothic themed detailes on the case. Just getting that door to cover it all. makes it so hard.. (with the dragon theme i found a smithed iron look for the front very fitting).

I don't remember how I first found this site, but it was a few years back when I was finally getting my act together and finishing the sandcrawler (little did I know I still had a year and a half at that point before it'd be done).
I hadn't intended to find a case modding community, I was actually looking for help on proper LED wiring, but while this wasn't the first forum I'd posted on, it was the first one where I got not only a response but ENTHUSIASTIC responses.
I gotta thank all you guys (and gals) out there - it was your enthusiasm for my project and other people's (not to mention the sense of belonging) that gave me the energy necessary to finish my beast of a project and contemplate future projects. In the last year or so since I lost my job I haven't been on as much, but you'll definitely see more of me once I have the income to support my modding hobby again...
