Just found out my transmission is shot! I have no 2nd and 4th gears on my 2005 Focus  Bit the dust in only 100k...have no warranty anymore either...

Estimated cost?
- To open and inspect and put the transmission back in - $600
- To rebuild the transmission completely - $3000
- To acquire and put a used transmission in - $1700

Arrrgggghhhhh....what am I gonna do

Heh, no problem bud. I'm sorry I'm not much help with the car troubles, but if you're ever up for some BF3 or something, I can always assist in video game homicide sprees :)

you could have just said buy Japanese. :lick:

Magnet Man- That strikes me as high, but transmissions are a bit of a voodoo art form even among mechanics. I can tell you though, anyone who has the ability to think on their feet, and remember how they took something apart can rebuild a transmission. A rebuild kit for a transmission is around $300USD, plus other worn parts, and a converter if you need one (You probably don't). As someone who has pulled their share of FWD transaxles, I can tell you the worst part is getting it out of the cramped engine bays...

I can probably look at my transmission parts catalogs and look at the exploded diagrams to tell you what is wrong. If it'll help you work a deal in your favor. It is most likely a clutch pack, drum, band, or solenoid. Is the tranny fluid dark, and burnt smelling?

Neodymium
01-31-2012, 09:30 PM
None of that - light pink oil, no burning smells...but I also read on Focus Fanatics that the issue could be shift soleniods - but that's as far as they go...with my limited knowledge, if I open the transmission, I might as well trash it :P I found the exploded diagram of the pan and the soleniods which needs replacing...but, hey, what the heck...if you have any, shoot em over, I would definitely appreciate it...thanks.

I'll see what I can do tomorrow after work. If my books don't have anything obvious, I can check another source that has all of the flow charts for the hydro system.

Believe it or not, a lot of newer cars are having issues at around 100k. Most of the time it is one silly weak link, or part that isn't up to the task. It is rarely clutch packs anymore unless something else is causing a engagement issue...

I've dug into three Hyundai transmissions lately that all had worn teeth on a drum (Made by Mitsubishi), a Chrysler 300 tranny that was shot (Made by Benz), and a GM 4L60E that had something silly I can't remember. All around a 100k...

shift soleniods

Well there's your problem; automatic transmission. :P

Sorry, can't actually be helpful on the topic. ;) I hope you can find a good solution that doesn't bankrupt you.

Well, according to the intarwubs, it looks like there is a fair amount of manufacturing going on up there:
http://www.canadianmade.com/automotive.shtml
Only one they list as an actual Canadian company though...and since they say that their product is based around the EEStor units and EEStor has failed to produce any results for, what, the last six years?..I'm gonna say they're also a vaporware company. :(
http://www.zenncars.com/
Don't get me wrong, I would be ecstatic if the EEStor units were real...at any cost...but given the data available I remain highly skeptical...but that's a topic for another time.

If it's a stickshift, have the shop drop it out. Take it home and fix it yourself. Those things are really, really simple. Hard part is getting it out of the car. Having two gears go out like that, it's usually on the same set of shift forks. Either the cam end of a fork broke, or something wore out and slipped out of place. Should be really obvious.

Check your local library reference section for Chilton manuals. Look up your car's transmission section. 90% or better it's a >$100 part and the rest is all labor.

It's auto, TLH, that whole system is driven by the solenoids...I don't know if that is the cause for sure...I'm going to take it to a different place tomorrow and see if they can give me the CEL codes for the error (impending - because I have no dashboard lights come on)...but thanks for the advice, I will look up the manuals...not sure if Chilton is available here, but I know there is Haynes that publishes those repair manuals.

Yet another reason to buy manual transmission cars? If this were to happen on a manual, you could...just not use those gears... :whistler: Not the best solution, but it would be workable. ;)

Neodymium
02-01-2012, 09:27 AM
I'm using the car with those the two gears that are left...1 and 3...turned OD off...so the 4th gear wouldn't engage...I can live with not having 2nd gear except that I can't continue driving it without fixing... :(

Sell the car and buy something that isn't American,

You can tell that to my 96' Ford explorer with 383,000 miles.

B@#tch has been to the moon and half way back, still runs like a gangster.

Yeah, I couldn't think of any that are made or designed in Canada

Hondas (at least ones for american market) are made and assembled in Canada

Dodges are made in mexico, Which is probably why diamond window as a parking lot full of broke down dodges hahahahhahahhaa.

Man its sad that there is a ford 1998 F-250 with well over 200,000 miles that still trucking along fine, but all the 2005+ dodges are blown out in some area.

IF YOU OWN A NEW DODGE RAM FOR THE LOVE OF JESUS DON'T TOW THINGS WITH IT, the planetary gear pin in the rear differential is made out of a Lincoln log or something hahahahhahaa.

Also what do you have against the Swedes? Volvo set the bar for reliability. My wagon's got 293k on the clock and still running strong, and my 760 turbo sedan is at 225 and also no issues.

Most driven. 1966 Volvo P1800S. Guy named Irv Gordon bought it new off the line and it's been his daily driver ever since, for last I heard just over 2.8 million miles.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Irv_Gordon

As far as mileage goes, the P1800S gets ~25mpg on average.
