Fallout 3: Wasteland Ranger
I've been wanting to do a theme case for the game Fallout 3, but I've had little luck with picking the proper look
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/vault_boy.jpg
I was recently looking at Troy Fryfogle's Hellusion (http://casemodgod.com/ModProjectLogs/CenobitePC/cenobitepc.htm) mod that he built years ago and even though I've seen it so many times, I was finally inspired.
So, I ordered my own mannequin
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100016.jpg
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100017.jpg
Except, I'll be using the whole mannequin
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100030.jpg
I'll also be adding some interesting accessories, like this Nerf gun
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100031.jpg
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100032.jpg
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100033.jpg
Mine will need it to look real
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100034.jpg
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100045.jpg
I'm going to be recreating the clothing too and making him look like a California Ranger from Fallout New Vegas, but not completely like the picture
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/ncr_ranger.jpg
I got these cool kneepads
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100042.jpg
My boots from when I was in the military. I'll go back and roughen them up later
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100039.jpg
And my old duty belt
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100041.jpg
Then I threw it all together with this one piece coveralls
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100043.jpg
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100044.jpg
Just thinking A-Head here
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100062.jpg
I ordered this gas mask on eBay. It came all the way from Lithuana!!
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100054.jpg
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100055.jpg
He's almost too pretty to cover up...
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100056.jpg
First I put on the black hood. I don't want his eyes visible through the mask eyes
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100057.jpg
And then I stuffed it all in the mask
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100058.jpg
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100059.jpg
And set it back on. Looks just creepy enough!
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100061.jpg

Right on Kirby! I love Fallout themed mods and this is going to be a very unique approach indeed. It's too bad you can't get this guy to part with his home-made Enclave helmet...

I finally got around to cutting him open
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100376.jpg
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100377.jpg
And it's roomier than I thought
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100378.jpg
Actually, 8 inches should be plenty
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100389.jpg
I put in a Micro ATX motherboard (just a dummy) and discovered my first obstacle. The mannequin has an arched back and the motherboard will not be able to lie flat
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100383.jpg
I want to use this video card inside
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100379.jpg
An even though it's a 3 slot beast it will still fit
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100380.jpg
First I'll have to remove the arch
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100384.jpg
I'm going to cut it out and then add some aluminum following the line and making it flat enough for a motherboard tray and stand offs
Remember, he's going to be wearing clothes and no one will no what his back looks like anyway
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100386.jpg
Let's get to work
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100393.jpg
And there goes that. It's very easy to cut this stuff
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100395.jpg
This sheet of aluminum was once in my R2-D2
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100397.jpg
I just have to mold it into place and then rivet it down
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100398.jpg
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100399.jpg
After that, I put tape on the rough edges so I don't get cut up later on by mistake
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100406.jpg
Now I need a motherboard tray and this case is garbage anyway
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100402.jpg
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100403.jpg
I use the dummy board again to make sure it lines up right
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100404.jpg
But I'm not sure how to make it stay in place so I rely on an old buddy: Expanding Foam
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100405.jpg
Once the foam dries I'll remove the board
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100416.jpg
I've come to realize that I won't be able to use such a huge video card anymore, but it's OK because I have many others
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100387.jpg
Now I need to make a place for the PSU, so I cut what I need
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100407.jpg
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100408.jpg
I predrilled out the holes for the rivets
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100409.jpg
After I cut it out I put the frame on the inside
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100410.jpg
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100411.jpg

Now that the foam is dry I was able to take the bad board out
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100423.jpg
I put the torso back on the legs so I could take a look at my progress
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100424.jpg
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100426.jpg
My gas mask hoses came from Lithuania too
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100428.jpg
I started to think about cooling. The PSU will be exhausting hot air out of the case, but I need at least one more fan doing that. I really only have room for one 80mm fan under the right arm
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100431.jpg
So, I used my holesaw
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100432.jpg
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100433.jpg
And the skull grill from my Treasured mod

I picked up this leg brace, but not for the mannequin
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100445.jpg
I pulled the metal support struts out
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100446.jpg
ANd then broke his right arm
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100447.jpg
So I can give him an elbow that bends

"But not for the mannequin."

I picked up another PC Power & Cooling 600 Watt Modular PSU. This is the ssame model I used in my kids' Purple HAF and Project: Industrial Revolution.
Why?
It's 600 Watts, Modular, a reliable brand and has 42 Amps on the 12 Volt rail for beefy video cards
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1090936.jpg
Unfortunately, I could only find 3 screws long enough to go through the mannequin and into the PSU

I decided to add at least one intake fan to the mannequin
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100452.jpg
This is the mesh panel from an Antec 300
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100454.jpg
That I just needed to cut to fit the fan
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100455.jpg
Like so. Except, I'm just not at all happy with the fan as it is. I'm going to look into a more red fan with a higher CFM

I finally got around to giving him an elbow
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100499.jpg
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100500.jpg
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100501.jpg
In order to give him a useable hand or at least one that will be able to hold his weapon, I'll have to cut his actual hand off
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100504.jpg
His new hand will consist of a bottom rubber layer
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100502.jpg
And a normal glove
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100503.jpg
First I filled the glove and fingers with expanding foam
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100505.jpg
And what's left of his hand
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100510.jpg
Then put it all together
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100511.jpg
To finish, I just had to wrap his fingers around the rifle handle. In a few hours, it will dry that way. Later, I will slide his whole arm up his sleeve to make the shoulder connection

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100553.jpg
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100554.jpg

http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100654.jpg
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100658.jpg
First I mount the SSD behind the motherboard
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100662.jpg
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100663.jpg
I really wanted to use my spare GTX 560 Ti, but I can't get it to work right, so I'll be using this GTX 460 instead
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100664.jpg
Once the parts are in I discover that my rear panel gets in the way of the video card, not letting it stay seated in the board
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100666.jpg
I still have to cut the glass to make it fit right
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100677.jpg
It all seems to be working now
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100669.jpg
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100688.jpg
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100698.jpg
I just have to figure out how to keep it all seated once it's done

I tested my GTX 560 Ti in a test system and it works fine. I wonder if it's the 600 Watt PSU, which should be more than enough, in my mannequin or maybe the card doesn't like Asrock boards?
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100706.jpg
I cut the side a little more so that the mannequins skin is pushing the card down into place. It seems a bit more sturdy this way. I also added a 60mm intake fan here too. It moves a lot more air than you'd think, but it's louder than I'd prefer.
I figure that once it's all complete and standing at Micro Center with all the music and customers, you really won't hear it anyway
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100708.jpg
I think that's about it. I just need a cathode inside and that's it. Time to finish the costume

A GTX 560Ti requires 550W alone. Maybe combined with the 2500K it needs more. My wifes PC is an older C2D with a GTX 560Ti on a 650W and runs fine.

I'm using addhesive velcro to hold the clothing to the body
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100713.jpg
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100714.jpg
And then started cutting away the excess fabric around the fans and components

He's too heavy now and no longer say standing using his base. I have a chair at his knees keeping him upright at the moment. I'll either have to add more below his base pushing him back or strap him to something that's already upright, like a pillar...

So, getting him to stand on his own has been real frustrating. I tried using the stand it came with and that didn't help at all. I then weighed it down and still nothing. I then replaced it with a weight, but then it just fell and dragged the weight behind it. I realized that no matter what I try he will not stand on his own and I needed to take away his ability all together and rely on something else.
I bought this heavy weight (Over 40lbs) umbrella stand.
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100759.jpg
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100760.jpg
And these steel poles that go together
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100761.jpg
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100762.jpg
I then needed to permanently bolt one to his body
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100763.jpg
I drilled the hole and reached up inside him where I added the washer and nut
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100765.jpg
I then combined both poles with a bolt and nut
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1100767.jpg
Now he actually floats about 5 cm from the base and seems stable. Now we wait to see if he ever falls over

I picked up this cabinet garbage bag dispenser for $10. It looks just like the something I can use for an oxygen pack
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1110650.jpg
It just needs paint
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1110652.jpg
I then got these actual gas mask filters, but I only need the screw part
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1110653.jpg
I forgot there is a lot of carbon inside these things and made a big mess
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1110654.jpg
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1110655.jpg
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1110656.jpg
Like I said, I don't need the whole thing
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1110659.jpg
I just had to cut an opening on both sides of the pack
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1110661.jpg
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1110662.jpg
Then I just had to run a heavy bolt in the pack and through the support beam on his back
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1110674.jpg
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1110675.jpg
Then I had to connect the mask hoses to the pack
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1110676.jpg
Now I add velcro to the pistol
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1110680.jpg
And secure it to his hand
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1110681.jpg
I want to make it look like there is some kind of filtration in the pack. I picked up this mesh that you lay on a BBQ grill so you can cook vegetables without them falling into the charcoal.
I just rolled it up and shoved it inside
http://www.pcmodhouse.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/p1110685.jpg
And that is all. It's on display ay my store
