View Full Version : RAID dying?

I had a BSOD yesterday for the first time in a couple of years as I was "waking up" my computer... went to type in my password and it blued.

When I restarted it said no OS. Powered off/on and it showed an error on the raid array but it booted up anyway. It's been running fine since. I haven't messed with any diagnostic tools yet but I did back up everything of value just in case a HDD is going south.

Anyway, reccomended HDD diag tools? I have the Geeksq*ad MRI disk but last time I used it, it didn't show a bad stick of mem so I don't have much trust in it.

It has been a couple of years though so maybe it's about that time to pick up new hdd's for the laptop.

I like how you blanked out part of Geeksq*ad. LOL!

What type of RAID is it, and is it hardware or software RAID?

I have software RAID5 on my mobo, and it goofed up the OS partition somehow. I ended up installing a separate drive for the OS and just use the RAID for game installs, media storage and the occasional drive image backup. (not my only backup location either)

I'm running 2x 320 blacks (7200 2.5") in R0. One of them is clicking so I'm thinking of ordering a 120gb ssd and keeping the other 320 in for backup. I'm not all that happy about having to waste money on it and I'm especially ticked about having to set everything back up. huihiudfhsaudhfa

Depending on the amount of stuff stored on your R0, if it's less than the capacity of one disk, you can just tell the RAID to dump everything to the good disk and eliminate the RAID configuration. Pretty simple really. Too bad hard drive prices are so high right now. Used to be you could grab a 1TB drive for like $50 new.

Mine's a 3x 500GB RAID5. Really decent read/write speeds in that configuration. The drives are 5 years old and still going strong.

Yup, sounds like a failing disk. ...which reminds me, I need to run some tests on one of my SSDs and get back up with OCZ...I am having the worst luck with storage devices lately...

I bit the bullet and ordered a 240gig SSD.

TLHarrel, that's a really good idea! I've never done it before but I'll read up on it. I'm at 324/596 but I'm sure I could get that number down.

x88, I've read tons of bad reviews on the OCZ drives. :\

Not when I got mine. ;) First-gen Vertex's. They've been fine for me...mostly...except for them dying after a few years of use... Good customer service though.
