After spending a good 5 hours reformatting my new ssd and getting everything just how I like it... I ran a speed test with hd tune. I wasn't thrilled with the performance boost so I began looking at settings and such. I restarted my laptop and just before shutting down it bluesceened for a split second. Weird...
I went into bios to change the hdd mode and it showed blank... Once I clicked it I only had ide and ahci. Now when I try to boot it gets to the splash loading twirly crap...freezes and blue screens!

Another option would be to hook it up to another pc and run chkdsk /f on it, maybe?

THankfully I haven't wiped my 7200's yet so I'm able to get back on the computer. ahci was the mode it said to switch to but the mode it was in at default was blank... I'm checking to see if the bios need an update but I'm going to be furious if I got a dud SSD that decided to crap out right after I got everything set up.

I can't even get in the chat right now... it just sends me down the forum page a little bit. I'm going crazy over this right now. lol
The bios download came in a rar and the bios on this laptop doesn't have an update feature so I need to make a bootable usb yada yada yada... Gateway was nice enough to not include instructions if the .rar should stay zipped or what.

You need to have it set to AHCI before you install afaik. You will get funny blue screens if you install on one setting and then try and switch later.

We sort of have it figured out, he managed to boot from the SSD at least, we believe the funny bios setting is because he had it set to RAID 0 HDD's before he switched to SSD, and didnt change it

Yep, I assumed BIOS would pick it up.
I switched back to the raid and turned it off before swapping the SSD back in... it got rid of the mystery setting but still locked up and blue screened.
I dunno if it's worth reformatting all over again or not but I have a feeling I'll end up trying it. At least it's fresh in my mind how I need to set up preferences.
EDIT: Here goes nothing...

I have my SSD set up in AHCI mode. In this mode it doesn't even appear as an installed drive in the BIOS. It does show up as the first boot option though. I've had no problems yet.

Reformatting starting with the correct drive settings did the trick. I'm not sure if I gained any performance or stability by doing so but I feel better about it being "right."
