Hi I bought a second hand computer a while ago and need a little more juice out of it, so I've got a few strange(to me)/simple(to you guys) questions.
Will a socket a motherboard take any socket a processor or do they have max speeds?
If there are limits how do I find out what they are?
How would I go about rack mounting the thing once it's done?
A little unrelated but have recently encountered lockup when switching profiles.
Current system
Asus A7M266
athlon 1.4 GHz
512Mb Ram

Welcome.
1 - The A7M266 will support up to a XP1600+ (Palomino Core) with the 1007 BIOS (according to ASUS :) ).
2 - Without stating the obvious, get a rackmount case. Be warned, they are a lot more expensive than standard cases. Perhaps you might want to make your own (if so a nice work log with lots and lots of pics would be nice :D )
3 - Check you've got (or download and install) the latest BIOS, Drivers and Windows patches/updates. Scan for virii and Spy/Adware. Repair load of Windows. If that still doesn't fix it wipe and reload.
Hope that helps, if not, I'm sure some other nice member will help out (they are a very friendly bunch;) )
PS - Is your nick made up, or do you have that:?
and if so, pleeeease NO Pictures.

Cheers Blade, where did you find that cause I've been searching for around a week and getting nowhere, though I'm prob looking in wrong places, or seeing it and not knowing how to interpret it. So upping my processor is pretty pointless??
Or can I flash the BIOS to make it accept a faster chip??
I need to try to get the thing to switch on ??SSE?? anyway, it all pretty much confuses me.
Yes Cockbeard became my nick around four years ago, nothing to do with downstairs, just a heady combination of heavy metal, little smoke and some great mates.
As far as the rack case goes, not a clue how to go about building one but a firm near me has just closed down so I might see if they'll donate some of their old gear.
It'll still need modding though and I'll happily post that up here

Got the specs from ASUS's website http://uk.asus.com
Just look in the support pages.
Check the BIOS revision when the PC first turns on, it will be on the initial POST screen. You will have to be quick, or you'll miss it
If its flying be too quickly, use the Pause key (normally at the top right of your keyboard) This let you see the screen easier.
Most newer boards show the bios revision in the bios itself, but not sure about yours.
Be nice if you can get your hands on some old racks....;)
Any other problems, give us a shout.
