Screw Questions

I want to get some black oxide screws for mounting my fans to my radiators, i'm planning on mounting them through the entire fan (ie through the entire 25mm) and go into the radiator mount point, so 3 questions, what thread, what length, and what size? lol... thanks guys

Have a local Home Depot or other hardware store? Best place to drop by to check hardware sizes.

Chances are the threads will either be 6/32 or M3 - the easiest way to check is to get a regular hard disk screw and try it - if it fits, it's 6/32 - if not, try a CDROM or floppy mounting screw - if that one fits, it's M3 - if neither fit, unless you have access to a tap and die set, you're going to have to go the hardware store route (or ask the manufacturer).

Make sure to try the hard disk screw first - if the hole IS 6/32 and you try an M3 screw, it will go in and they can be a pain in the ass to get back out again....

sweet. it's the hard drive screw, i just didn't know how to get the measurement of the thread, since google had given me both numbers.

I picked up a few for my rad, picked up some 6-32 and some 8-32, both 30mm long. I ended up finding out that both worked but the 8-32 fit a bit better, but that may have been from me using the wrong screws before.

Hardware stores typically have these neat little things you can use to check screw diameter (how big around it is) and pitch (how many threads there are per inch). Then it's just a matter of finding it in the bin in whatever length you want.

My tap and die set came with some thread gauges... little thin metal things with various teeth. Also, using a die works well for verifying diameter. It's just a cheapie set from Harbor Freight, but works well enough.
