Hypothetical question time!
Let's say you won a large sum of money. Approximately $150,000,000 USD (after tax).
What would you do with it?

that's easy.
throw a few mil at a charity, something good like the aspca.
throw a few bucks to family. then a few more bucks to friends.
put enough away to live on forever if i do something stupid and loose the rest.
then the shopping spree commences. i'd buy up all the houses on my street and then hold lawnmower drag races.
oh yeah, i'd go and buy 1 of every model of supra produced and a toyota stout pickup.
then i'd start looking into some property where i could start up a miniature dog fighting club because i think a chinese crested all tattooed up would be funny!
then i'd probably buy myself a wife.

I would do the things I've always wanted to do.
Build a great house.
Build the business(es) I've always thought would be cool.
Start a computer parts company.
Make stuff every day.
Have many kids and have a happy life knowing I can spend time with them whenever I want.
Travel and see the world.

Buy a large space of land so I can do flight tests (maybe build a house on it as well).
Buy a house in the area I am in currently (maybe build one that me and my partner like the design of)
Buy a couple of cars (Honda Jazz, Low end Ferrari)
Invest in a few things.
Buy a few things for my robotics/electronics research
Buy a few planes (and make a little bunker so I can charge LiPo batteries with minimal risk)
Pay off my father's debts and allow my mother to move away from my father.
Buy a horse for my girlfriend.
Buy raw materials for both me and my girlfriend.
Buy a couple of small scale CNC machines, small scale laser cutter and a small scale 3D printer
Upgrade the computers we have and make a file server
Then save the rest!

Pay off all my bills, and debt.... I'd have enough left to but a 1984 Honda Civic :D
The investment in gold is a great idea.. Especially with current economic trends...
I wouldn't keep any in the bank. 150Mil generates a lot of interest, and that's taxable income, oh my brother.
Of course the ridiculous shopping sprees for my whole family. My kids would want for nothing, anymore.

So you'd rather have no income than taxable income? ;) Even at just 1% interest, that would still be $1.5 million/year. Even if 50% is taken due to taxes, that's still a net income of $750k/year.
Anyways, what would I do? Hmm, let's see...
1) Pay off my house, my parents' house, and probably my sister's as well.
2) Pay off my remaining student loans and personal loan.
~$149,600,000 left
Ok, debt at 0. Now to make sure I have something to fall back on if I f*** up and lose everything.
3) Buy at least one nice property in a desirable location in every major city in the world, and contract with local property management companies to handle renting them out.
4) Invest heavily in Tesla Motors, SpaceX, Virgin Galactic, and Google, among others.
~$75,000,000 left
5) Drop the rest in an FDIC ensured, high-interest savings account, and use it to start my dream business: a combination makerspace, hackerspace, technical college, engineering and technology thinktank, and venture capital firm. Basically, stop complaining about the system being broken, and go out and do it the (imo) right way.

I'd build the world's most expensive personal computer. And then I'd smash it with a hammer in front of lan parties.
I'd set myself up for life in the upper-middle class category. I'd give a couple million to my close friends and family members.
I would then invest the rest into education. I'm not sure how. Roughly $100m is a lot of money... but at the same time, it's not. I'd want to do something that is lasting and that could help change this country for the better.
Perhaps I would hold a competition to see who has the best and most realistic plan if we were to completely reform our educational system and offer a sizable amount of money for the winner. Then perhaps I could pay off some politicians to get it set into motion, since I doubt anything would ever come of it otherwise.
Set for life and known globally as a total badass? Sounds good to me. I mean, it doesn't really get much better than that... anything else is just being completely selfish, I think. Though I've always been of the opinion that there shouldn't be a lower class, upper class or super upper class, so much as differing degrees of middle class.

how about a total reform of the government system? seems like a better use of money, the rest should fix itself, without paying off politicians if you did it right. but you would have to make it go mainstream to the people, because god knows, politicians want gov't corrupt... lobbying them won't help. go after the general populous. :D

You would have to pay the bad politicians to resign. Which, they wouldn't. You would have to offer them their wildest dreams. And some of them wouldn't anyways, probably because they believe in whatever they're doing. etc.
It would cost a lot more than a $100m. More like billions. And it would only solve the problem until corruption seeps back into the government, which I imagine can happen pretty quickly.
Education on the other hand... the greatest tool you can give a person is intelligence. I think it would be much more effective and long-lasting. An intelligent people can fight anything, not just a bad government.

Need a bit more than $150 million....try more like $150 trillion...maybe make a dent then.

First, I'd secretly conduct a study of what my [responsible/real] friends/immediate family's dream cars and houses were (within reason, I'm not paying their insurance for the rest of their life)... then I'd take that data and when everything is bought and cleared... "Hey, you busy? Come check this out!"...after they curse me out from jealousy, laugh and hand 'em the keys.
I'd buy a decent size house with double doors, an outrageous garage/machine shop. An indoor pool with a large skylight would be amazing... Personal fire range on the lot with a vaaaaaast firearm and knife collection (obsessed with tactical folding knives).
I'd start every single business I've ever dreamed of. I'd offer job positions to friends who were qualified... if they weren't, offer schooling and a future position with full benefits and vacations.
I'd give my musically talented friends a head start on their dreams.
1 exotic car, 1 modest track car, then a few "different" cars. rx7 with a v8 swap, 1972 'Cuda pro-tour'd out. Daily drivers: Audi RS4, F150 Raptor.
I'd research military families that have been destroyed due to injuries/deaths especially those who are having their homes foreclosed. Change a few random strangers lives that don't have that "life's tough, I deserve a free living" mentality. I personally don't have much trust in charities so I'd rather deal with those in need myself. Plus randomly pay for peoples gas, groceries, medical bills, etc.
Get married, have kids, push them to work hard and take school seriously. I wouldn't make them get a job when they're 16 or something but I wouldn't buy them everything under the sun either. Good grades would = more rewards.
