so yea... i got my brand spanking new cold cathodes from ebay. i plug one in and it works great! i pick it up and let it dangle. the connection isnt the greatest and it flickers. but i notice, the TV bugs out as soon as it starts flickering. when i stop it, the TV is fine. What the hell. now i had no idea that electromagnetic waves powered by a 12V source could be that strong.

Your kit had an inverter right?
Here's the specs on one from FrozenCPU.com (http://www.frozencpu.com/lit-110.html) (just to give an example). Your specs may be different.
Specifications:
Input voltage: 12V
Output voltage: 620V
